In this video, my wife, daughter, and I open our first ever PO Box package from France! This parcel has a massive amount of unique French items, everything from chocolate and biscuits to teas, soups and so much more!

The ‘ku’ petit beurre biscuit are butter biscuit. Delicious for breakfast with hot chocolate, coffee or tea. The chocolate with the elephant is delicious. The soups are what we use if we can’t be bothered to make on from scratch or at work in the winter. Bon appetit.

Lindsay, if you google Madeleines you’ll see the cake pan with the specific shape, sort of like a thick fan. Long Madelines would just be the longer version. They’re usually cakes, but in the packet, they might be a firmer style.

I was at the foodbank the other day and there was a big kinder egg and i wanted it. "No you can't have that Hardy! That's for the children" Said the woman who runs the place. "But i am a child!" i said. - Well that didn't work, so i grabbed a big 'Ferrero Rocher collection' box instead. Not a bad trade off. 😂 No Asterix book?!! When i was young in the UK all we ever wanted from France was French bangers or 'petards' (firecrackers basically) so we could blow up cowpats or blow baked bean cans 20 feet in the air 🙂 You can't buy them in the UK.

Unfortunately there is nothing to be done about the unfortunate French tendency to use peculiar spelling, which is hardly English at all, and is almost another language entirely...... My own French is similar to that of Chaucer's nun, who spoke: 'Such French, as was never in Paris heard' but I find shouting in English is sufficient.

After around 1650 or so, I failed to keep pace with the improvements made, which ultimatly led to the correct English language, as exemplified by correspondence by the civil service, which appear to bear no relation to the language of Shakespeare, Chaucer et al., who were mere primatives grunting in comparison!

Join the club, gave up languages as soon as was able but have regretted it since, not sure how useful Latin would be today but French and German would be, lost my translator when Dad passed, he was fluent in six European languages, including Russian and passable conversation in another three. Watching the TV news when he was on leave was a hoot as he accurately translated the interviews including any swear words not in the commentary or sub titles.

@@tonys1636 I think when you don't either practice or have the opportunity to practice it gradually diminishes. I also had to learn Latin, as French and Latin were compulsory back then. Latin for 2 years, French 5 years. Wow your dad sounds like a remarkable man to have learned six European languages, to speak and translate them too (including said omitted swear words) is impressive. Best Wishes.

@@susanashcroft2674 They were responsible for his career as an RN Intelligence Officer, he thought he had kept it secret at Dartmouth but on graduation was whisked up to the Admiralty and told he was now a spook, not the seagoing career he envisaged but still took him around the world, some places nice but most actively dangerous, that lessened with rank culminating as a Naval Attache in various British Embassies. He retired in 1966 after 33 years having made it to Rear Admiral.

Just came back from La Rochelle which was a wonderful surprise treat for my 70th birthday from my daughters . Love France and hadn’t been there for a long time. It was lovely spending quality time with my daughters too as it was just the three of us.

Rough uk guide for jars of fruity goodness Jam: chopped or pureed fruit and sugar Extra Jam: jam with a higher fruit content (there is a legal minimum) Jelly: strained fruit juice from cooked fruit with added sugar Curd: A spread also used as a pie filling or pie topping made from citrus fruit zest, citrus fruit juice, eggs, butter, and sugar. Marmalade: citrus fruits either whole or chopped and sugar. Shred or Fine Cut contains thin shreds of peel. Shredless has no peel. Fruit Spread or Fruit Butter: pureed fruit thats reduced down to a thick consistency that is spreadable. Chutney: cooked combo of chopped or pureed fruit and/or vegetables, sugar, vinegar and spices. Can be sweet or sweet and savoury. Sometimes can be quite spicy too. Compote: Fresh or dried fruit either whole or in chunks cooked slowly in a syrup. Preserves: whole fruit or chunks and sugar. My cousin is a Jean-Marc too. I live on the Island of Guernsey, just off the coast of Normandy, we can see each other. I have lots of family in France and have worked there too. Be fair to those who ship you goodies, forget the price of the items its shipping that is expensive as heck. We ,live in west Wales UK and we send parcels to our son who lives in Columbus Ohio and its really quite expensive.

Exactly. I sent a small badge from England to florida, to my cousin and the postage was really expensive. About 5 times the price if the badge 😂 It was a tiny package so I dread to think what these huge boxes cost. Plus the postal service is terrible over there. Things arrive in a couple of days, then often take weeks to get delivered once in America.

Think you will be spending time scanning those with the Google translate app activated on your cell phone. Square jars have taken off in Europe as less shelf space wasted both in supermarkets and kitchens, we have to cram a lot into limited space.

My local grocery shop where I live in England stocks Lu biscuits. I love them. Couldn't see the pic on the packaging clearly but looked like the ones i can buy here - thin biscuits with a thin chocolate topping. Three varieties - milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate. They're very more-ish! I have 3 with my morning coffee, then halfway through the coffee, return to the kitchen to grab another 3 🤫

As a generalisation, when French words end with an “s” or a “t” those letter are silent, eg “Les” is pronounced “lay”. Consonants have a softer pronunciation.

World famous 😂, i have been fortunate enough to visit France a few times both as a short holiday (vacation) and even a couple of day trips to Calais. If you're able to spare a couple of days and put aside the funds would highly recommend taking the high speed train to Disney land Paris which is just over 2 hours from London to Paris plus short transfer. I think Sofia would love it, but then so would lindsey and yourself. Whenever i used to visit London by train years ago which was quite often there was a French patisserie/bakers at Victoria Station, never left without a cheeky croque monsieur (basically a fancy cheese and ham toastie) and some other little treats 😋, there is a clip on you tube showing a unique fun way of crossing the channel, will find it and share link

@@davem12dim17 I’m not sure if I’m a rarity. It may just be that the majority of people that you speak about familial origins with, are members of your family or people whose families are from the same areas that yours are, which would increase the chances of having similarities. I am a Scot, who knew that somewhere down the line my Mum’s Dad’s family had Irish roots due to the surname (though I’ve not been able to determine exactly how far back they were Irish instead of Scots). I knew that my Paternal Grandma was from England, though a town very close to the Welsh border and I knew that there was also Irish on my Dad’s Paternal Grandmother’s side. I was a little surprised by the Welsh heritage that showed on my DNA, though not shocked due to where my Grandma was from. I was shocked however to discover a bit of Cornish and Yorkshire in the mix…though with both being in very small percentages, it must be really far back. I must admit I was a little bit disappointed, as I hoped that there might be something a bit exotic in there but alas, it wasn’t to be…I have to settle for the slightly humorous fact that around 69% of my DNA was determined to originate from Scotland and North East Ireland.

You can find Lu cookies and cakes all over Europe. Haute-Vienne is a region in mid-France. Côte d'Or is originally from Belgium but it is now part of Mondelēz International just like LU is too. Ricola is originally from Switzerland but you can find them too all over Europe and it is not tea but herbal candies. Madelaine cakes are originally from the French region of Commercy, The jar Andros Peche is sauce of peaches just like apple sauce but then from peaches. The peanut butter jar with the green cap is made from 100% peanuts, they also have 2 other variants with a red (creamy) and blue (cruchy) cap.

Good Morning you lovely lot! "The" is French for Tea. Pronounced Teh but don't drag the word out.... It's a sharp one syllable. Remember when you're here in the UK, France is just across the ocean and takes no time at all really on the Chunnel! (Although personally I'm still a die-hard Ferry fan!) France is a big country and a lot of it is very rustic and rural countryside, cute little villages, and old stone farmhouses. I've spent more holidays in France than other European countries, and tons of day trips over the years. Normandy... it's that important history I told you about Steve! Normandy is in the North of france, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it's in the North, hence the name Normandy. However, it's name comes from "North Men" .... Yep, those bloody Scandinavians turned up everywhere! 😂 Vikings came to France as well as Britain, and settled in the region named after them, Normandy. Remember I told you that in 1066 the King died and left no heir, no brothers, but he did have a second cousin in France who he'd promised his throne to. However, the King's brother-in-law, Harold, got the men of the council to agree to him being King, despite him not being blood related and he was hastily crowned well before William heard the news in France. When William did find out however, he roused up an army of men from Normandy, and set sail for England to claim his throne. The Normans arrived on the South coast, just down the road from me, at a beach town called Hastings. Then marched inland although not too far, arriving at a small town beside Hastings that was named Battle, after the battle that took place on the fields beside Battle Abbey. Battle is a lovely town. Harold was killed with an arrow in his eye, and William marched to London to be crowned. William The Conqueror, as he was called, was crowned on Christmas Day 1066 in Westminster Abbey...the same abbey where King Charles III was crowned. In fact, all of England's monarchs SINCE William, have all had their coronation, ceremony, order of service, clothing, crowns etc follow the same pattern of events that William had, AND they are all descendants of William. It's a crucial part of ours and France's history. It shaped the country we live in today, and most of the castles here were built in this period, in the traditional Motte and Bailey style, that William chose. It caused a lot of wars between England and France over the years, because after William, his heirs COULD also claim the French crown too....right? In theory at least, through William, they would certainly have a legitimate claim...not a very close claim, but still blood related. A few of our Kings over the years went to war with France. At certain points of history, England ruled parts of France, meanwhile back in England, William changed the official national language to French, and that went on for 400 years. And so English, is in origin a Western Germanic language, it was heavily infused with French, and Danish/Swedish. All schoolchildren in England are taught French, although not to the point of being fluent necessarily unless they study it with further education, but at least enough to be fairly capable of asking directions, making purchases and having simple conversations. The Battle of Hastings is memorialised in a HUGE tapestry, called The Bayeux Tapestry. (Pronounced bi yer) It was completed around a decade after the Norman conquest, and is still on display in Bayeux, France now. You can Google it and see it online. I am descended from the Huguenots (pronounced Hugh gain ose) that came to England in the 1500s, after being chased out of France for being Protestants. They favoured the teachings of John Calvin - Calvinists, like many Germans favoured the teachings of Martin Luther - Lutherans. Henry VIII welcomed the Huguenots as he was in his Protestant phase himself, and was glad of the extra manpower to go round sacking all the Catholic churches, convents, abbeys, monasteries and bring their money, books, Holy relics, valuable statues and altar decorations back to the Privy Purse. I believe 1 in 6 English people are descendants of Huguenots, and I'm one of them! 😁 Most "native" Brits have Germanic, Roman, Viking and Norman blood in them.
