In an interview he said he doesn't like to make music about him. He love to study people and their lives and write songs about it. Its like his interpretation of what he understands of the situation. I absolutely love Stromae 💘 in the way he sings and bring awareness to problems.

That’s why this is his most personal song IMO. While on the African part of his Racine Carrée tour in 2015, he was given the anti malarial drug, Lariam, which has devastating side effects including Anxiety, severe depression and suicidal thoughts. This coincided with the very last part of his long worldwide tour where he performed 206 concerts. He was absolutely exhausted too. He has openly stated that his brother, Luc, noticed he was acting strangely (he was in fact hallucinating too). Luc postponed the rest of the tour. In fact, he only did the Kigali concerts and they were the final 2 concerts, 4 months late, but visiting Rwanda was extremely important and difficult for him. He had never been there, except as a very you g child for a couple of weeks. His mother is Flemish and he was born in Belgium. His father was a Tutsi (from Rwanda) who had been studying architecture in Brussels when he met Stromae’s mother. When he was 2 years old his father returned to Rwanda (I read in an article from a Rwandan newspaper that he was pressured to go back by his father as he had paid for his education in Brussels and wanted him to come back and help design buildings for Rwanda, but whatever the reason sadly it led to his death. He was hacked to death during the Genocide there in 1994 when 1 million Tutsi were murdered, hacked to death, by Hutus. There’s a wall with their names on it. Stromae cried during an interview there. I believe Stromae has tried to make L’enfer for anyone who has suicidal thoughts no matter why, but he has been through hell himself. He is a cinematographer, a fashion designer and had always planned to take off a few years to do other projects after Racine Carrée as he had been working non stop since he started with his “Les Leçons” which made Stromae almost instantly famous worldwide with “Alors on Dance”. Then he wrote and toured “Cheese”, his first album, followed by Racine Carrée. He is a perfectionist and workaholic (I recognize both those traits in myself). That’s a little background. I remember him saying that he changed Papaoutai to be less personal as he said life is not so interesting and he wanted it to be for anyone who had grown up with an absent father. So I’m aware of that quote of his. I think I’ve now watched every interview he’s ever given in French and English and read most articles I can find about him online. I sound like a crazy person, I know, but last year I really missed Stromae and I spent the entire year only watching his interviews and replaying all his music videos, Leçons and especially the Montreal concert of Racine Carrée which was perfection. I’m sure they all were, but the Montreal concert was professionally filmed and it now has subtitles (which only partly do it justice as Stromae uses so much wordplay). Then suddenly in October he came back with just a countdown clock for his new single, Santé. I was so happy. To your very good health. Santé!

He had a mental breakdown and suicidal thoughts after using anti malaria medication in 2017. So it is based on a personal story. He also had a breakdown after his successful years, causing depression and a burn out. You can find several interviews were he talks about it. One on Belgian and one on Dutch tv.

This is his personal story, however he chose to perform this song for the first time during the 8 o’clock news. (It’s on his youtube channel) Knowing how many people are going through the same thing, especially right now with covid and all the lockdowns etc..so I personally think that was a very smart thing to do. Because he did it on the news and in a very special way, it went viral and therefore got a way bigger audience than usual..unfortunately he also got a lot of critism because of it from people who probably don’t understand why he did what he did. I’m glad he did it tho 👍

Nice reaction, French may be tricky and sometime too subtle ... yet for my (French speaking) point of view the video is too obvious ... keep in mind he is Belgian (as me) and we do not tend to go for the perfect French grammar, we use shortcuts ...Frotter - Rubbin - vaut mieux ne pas.s'y frotter.- Better not mess with it and the following sentence about rubbing Brosser - tu pourras te brosser - you ll face your failure (tricky - I told you)
