Stay far away from Pat's, they're just a tourist trap along with Geno's. A while ago, the Philadelphia Inquirer's food critic did a comparison of all the major cheesesteak places in the city. Pat's?
I totally agree! I was in Philly for my niece's wedding, and of course I wanted to try a Philly cheesesteak. So I went to this place because of the rep. Now I want to be clear. It was NOT a bad sandwich. In fact, it was a good sandwich. I am from NY City, so I am used to great heroes. But I remember thinking while eating this hero, "Okay. It's about as good as a cheesesteak hero I can get off a decent food truck or sidewalk vendor here in NY. No better, no worse." Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since some of the street vendors have awesome food in NY. But I was nonetheless disappointed. I expected a lot more. So I asked a few residents and they gave me the scoop, and sent me to an out of the way place, all the way in South Philly called The Real Tony Luke's (Maybe it was The Original Tony Luke's?). Anyway, this place absolutely blew me away! I was about to order a Cheesesteak, but when I saw roast pork with broccoli-Rabe and fresh provolone, I had to go with that. One of the best sandwiches I ever had in my life. Pat's and Gino's are just mediocre sandwich shoppes making bank on their name, nothing more. Next time I go there I have to try the actual Cheesesteak, because I saw the cooks make them, and they looked like they were practically cramming the meat and cheese into the hero bread with a plunger and a crowbar.

I went there and they use cheese whiz. It tasted okay. Then the native of Philadelphia brought us to a local, neighborhood cheese steak place and it just blew this place away. Not only was the cheese steak huge, at least twice as long as what the video showed, but it used real cheese. It was far, far better tasting.

Born and raised in Philly. I haven't been back in over 20 years. Pats and Genos are overrated. They DO NOT make the best cheesesteaks in Philly and the only people who think that are tourists. The best cheesesteaks are made in the neighborhoods by small 'mom and pop' shops not on the tourists routes. Places like Hoagie City on 49th and Lancaster or Sandwich Masters on 56th and Market St ( If they're still there )...or Leandros Pizza in Upper Darby. Also, there are 2 different kinds of cheesesteaks. Pats uses Cheez Whiz ( I don't know about Genos ). The best places use White American Cheese and wafer steak about the consistency of Steakums. You get a clean bite through the Amoroso roll with wafer steak, not the fight with shaved beef that'll pull your roll apart when your teeth get involved in a tug 'o war. Trust me on that..these guys are living on nothing but tourists dollars.

The staff behind the desk (3 of them) get in to this argument that almost came to blows over the best cheese steak. We picked the closest one as we were on foot.

That is NOT 7/11 nacho cheese, that is the one, the only, the original Cheese Whiz. It comes in a giant can and is nectar of the gods, especially on fries. Also, you do have other options for your cheese steak. In fact, the people I know rarely get whiz on their steak. Provolone is the most popular, but I'm a fan of American because of the way it melts into the meat. Back in my younger days, of course, I would often go with a "Heart Attack"- all three cheeses together. And, yes, these are the ONLY three acceptable cheeses: provy, whiz and American.

Here in my city we got the best cheesesteak in Italy, there was a community of Italian immigrants from a small town close Naples who went to live in Philadelphia in the 30's and they cameback after few generations in the 70's (maybe their sons etc.) Importing the philly cheesesteak combined with italian ingredients. We use a lot of combination with ingredients but cheesesteak with parmigiana di melanzane (a neapolitan classic recipe made with fried aubergines) is definetely the best! Naples is considered the Capital of street food here in Italy, our italian cheesesteak it's very good, you expert from Philadelphia should try it! It's a similar story like pizza in New York!

My first trip to Pats was years ago when my college roommate from Philly took us there at 3am after a Sat night of bar hopping I remember driving through dark neighborhoods on narrow streets lined with parked cars and then all of a sudden it's like a miniature times square with Pats on one side of the street and Genos on the other with throngs of people everywhere.
Not even top 20... However, usually "Philly" cheesesteaks fall into the same food category as pizza...as in, even when it's bad, it's still good. It's not that Pat's is disgusting or inedible...it's just that there are far better places to go for a decent cheesesteak. You literally have to do some grotesque experiment to make a cheesesteak taste bad, same with pizza. Like putting chocolate and pineapples on a pizza lol.
@edwardgiovannelli51913 жыл бұрын
@@romel420 It doesn't take a grotesque experiment, field marshal, all you have to do is cook 45 sandwiches worth of meat at one time, so the meat is piled 6" high and almost none of it ever touched the griddle. Most of the meat steams from the heat rising off the layers below and there's no flavor in steamed meat... you might as well boil it. So to make a bad cheesesteak, all you have to do is literally exactly what Pat's and Geno's do every day.

Grew up in Philly and these are not the cheesesteaks I remember. The steaks were made from thinly sliced (3 slices per steak) chunks of beef that had been frozen into rectangular loafs. I worked at one of the factories that made them. And the cheese was mixed with the steak at the time of cooking. Not lathered on later. I would love to try these. Maybe they are better. But after living in Philly for 20 years, this just looks really strange to me.
