That one that you weren't impressed with, was about the incredible anticipation and reading of where the ball was going from the First Slipsman. He ran before the delivery to a position to catch a nick from the Batsman. That one was one of the most incredible pieces of Cricket...that's why it is included. You have the very best Sports Reaction Channel, love your work.

It's very difficult to anticipate going to the opposite side of where you were and still make a catch while on the move. Normally at slip you stand still and wait to catch the ball so that is way harder than he made it look.

You beat me to it. I was going to say the exact same thing. Normally that ball would have gone down to fine leg. You don’t see many slips fielders take a catch on the other side of the wicket.

@@Sal19732 You are correct with the infield close catching positions needing to be stationary until the ball is released by the bowler, but in this case you can see that the fielder does not move at all until the ball is about 1/3 down the pitch. He can see its passing down leg side and moves to anticipate a possible catch.

The one you were not impressed with was probably the most impressive. He anticipated where the ball was going to go and caught the ball with his left hand when he is right handed. It was a brilliant bit of fieldinig. He would not have seen the ball come off the bat.

Crossing behind the wicketkeeper, you temporarily lose sight of the ball; catches like that are as much spectacular as a stretch, as the fielder has to pick up the flight of the ball in a split second.
@theshrubber3730

I don't think you understand how difficult that catch behind the wicket was. It doesn't have to be spectacular to be good. The way he read what the bowler and the batter were going to do was amazing.
@0Zolrender0

@10:50. The catch you thought should not be in there. The reason it was is because it took a lot of correct anticipation from the fielder to position himself correctly to even have an attempt at the catch. Then to take it one handed as he moved to his left was quite a feat, given he was only meters away from the batsman.

There was some great catches there, but that is one of many collections of great catches. There was little in the way of close catches around the bat and particularly in the 'slips' which are so difficult and require incredible concentration. A first slip might have to stand, switched on concentrating, for almost a whole day of test cricket (six hours) and just when everybody else is looking forward to getting off the field, a shower, a drink and food, a 'blinder' comes along and he/she has to take it for the team.

Johnnny, don't forget how close the catcher is from the bat. In the outfield you have time. When only 15- 20 feet from the bat you have VERY little time to react ( Jonty Rhodes examples, only 20 feet from bat and hit well !)

6:50 as with the previous catch, if you are heading over the boundary, but release the ball before you land over it, and the ball is caught again inside the boundary, that’s out. If you touch the ground while holding the ball outside the boundary, it’s a 6; if you touch the ball while in the air, it’s still live.

The catch where the fielder from first slip catchs a tickle down the leg side is amazing because it is something that you just dont see. If there is no leg slip then any potential catches down the leg side are normally the wicket keepers responsibility. This guy takes this catch with limited ability to visually track the ball, low down to his left in a feilding postion that he is not even fielding in.

When a ball is being caught, it is considerd "alive" until the umpire is convinced that it is fully under the conrol of the fielder. At that point it is dead until it is next bowled. If the ball is caught close to the boundary, and the fielder steps over the boundary while holding the ball, the batsman is awarded six runs, and he is not out. That is why the fielder will throw the ball in the air while he gets himself back inside the boundary.

Speaking as someone who has retired after playing for more than forty years there a couple in there I felt I should comment on. From a technical point of view the Shahid Afridi catch at 9:00 was so good because there is so much calculation involved (they are bitches!) plus the catch behind the wicket at 10:53 was so terrific because he read the batsman's intentions from his first movements, crossed behind the keeper and then made the catch look easy with his weaker hand. The vast majority of players would never have seen it, read it, or had the nous to intercept it. The guys who field in close positions behind the wicket are exceptional catchers with amazing reflexes. The diving full stretch catches are great to take but generally I felt 'well I got there and so I ought to catch it". It is sort of equivalent to having a fielder close behind and to the right of a baseball catcher who gets across to the other side of the catcher to take the ball with no mitt in his weaker hand, and make it look simple.

Try fielding at silly mid on or silly mid off maybe 2 mtrs from the bat the ball is travelling at the same speed as a baseball after they hit it especially with a full swing of the bat = they still dont wear gloves. The position is not called silly without good reason, those guys need to wear extra padding and helmets just to field that close to the bat.

If a fielder catches the ball in the air, but lands past the boundary, a boundary(4 runs) is scored; therefore fielders will always attempt to throw the ball back over the boundary before they land, and hope another fielder can catch it( or if good enough, get back over the boundary and re-catch the ball).

Great reactions, Johnny. I agree that the best ones are when they are stretched out in the air catching with one hand. I think you got the idea of catching near the boundary. You can't touch or step over the rope, so you might have to throw the ball up before you step over the boundary and catch it yourself inside the boundary or throw it to a team mate before you step over the boundary. If you do step on or over the boundary in attempting to take a catch, it is 6 runs.

If the fielder takes the ball over the boundary and he steps out of the field of play while in possession it will be 6 runs. That's why he threw it back into the field of play, stepped back in and took the catch, that is just great awareness and athleticism. That second last catch where the announcer said it was the best catch he has seen, he was in the moment and it is possible he meant the best catch he has seen live, or commentated to. They don't come along too often like that.

G'Day Johnny. Loving your reviews. I am not trashing any sport, but when you get close up and realize that the clip on the bat and then away and it was caught may not have been the most spectacular, but it is like you said 'never take your eye off the ball' including if the ball hits the bat on the way through. The fieldsman caught it that's why it was out, the technical skill also applies. The athleticism with all sportsman is mind blowing! If the fieldsman knocks the ball back inside the boundary to prevent the score of "6" goes back into the field of play and caught, then it's out. Check out some BBL Big Bash League.. If you catch an outfield ball, and hold the ball when you touch the ground over the boundary, it would not be out. So you would need to tap it back whilst in the air to the in field, and catch it again or have another fielder in play to complete the catch. Since the game is more than 100 years old I am sure that there would be other speckies (Aussie slang for a spectcuar catch).

Hi Johnny. 😀 It's great to see you enjoying cricket. 🏏 In cricket, if a fielder's touching the ball and a part of his body is touching the boundary then the batter scored a 4 or 6. And the batter can *not* be out caught. But, they can jump over it but they must not be touching the ball when they land outside the boundary. You should see the catch that Travis Head took in the world cup final. And imagine the context of the game. But before that you are going along well with your cricket learning. You have come along way with cricket. I will find you a link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ7Mh4qFbMaVbposi=PKErA1E3f2Ajk8dE this is another fielding video..run outs 😮 I love how you feel passionately about the catches being good and not so good.
