Something else to look out for with Shane's bowling is the way he could move the ball around in the air before it bounces on the pitch. Take another look at some of the leg break deliveries in match conditions and you’ll notice the ball drifting to the right in flight before hitting the pitch and jagging left. Commentator’s would often talk about how the batsman was “deceived in flight,” meaning they’d misjudged lateral or even vertical ball movement in the air and then flailed trying to cover or hit the ball. Shane was brilliant at tossing the ball high in the air making the batsman think they’re getting a juicy full toss to hit to the fence, when in fact it would dive to the ground in front of them, hit the pitch and possibly spin into stumps or get nicked for a catch. Under match conditions the ball would develop a shiny side and a smooth side making possible all the flight variations that Shane was a master at exploiting. Johnny, try searching for Shane Warne and “beaten in flight” for good video examples. Cheers mate!

I’m a pitcher. A curveball grip is the same as a leg brake spin bowl. Where the hand comes down the outside of the ball and a snap of the wrist to curve the ball. Shane spins the ball off brake. Opposite direction. Shane could rip a spin that hard that it would curve in the air one direction, then spin off the ground the opposite way. Absolute legend.

In relation to surgery... the main problems bowlers have are the shoulder and back... as the arm is straight on delivery the elbow really isn't strained at all hence no "Tommy John" problems. For fast bowlers quite often they have not only back but knee and lower leg problems due to the impact the front foot has when in the delivery stride.. if you watch Brett Lee from side on you can see his left knee almost bends slightly the wrong way... very stressful.

It’s interesting you mention Michael Jordan- Warnie was mates with Michael Jordan and when he passed, Jordan sent flowers and paid tribute to him. Warnie was quite the celebrity - Elton John even live streamed a touching dedication to Shane from his US concert.

I heard that Warne always wore 23 from his football days. But it is probable that a young Warne chose that number because of Michael Jordan. He got to meet Jordan after he was sponsored by Nike. It's cool that they had a friendship. They were both very skilled and great competitors. #23

That is the Adelaide Oval scoreboard you see behind him in parts of the tutorial. The Adelaide Oval Scoreboard, completed in 1911, is an excellent example of an architect's solution to a potentially mundane commission. Manually operated over four storeys, the Scoreboard incorporated new features including a novel approach to the layout of information which gave unparalleled detail on the progress of cricket matches, only surpassed with the advent of modern electronic scoreboards. It is still actively used for cricket matches (with some electronic supplements elsewhere around the oval), as well as the major winter sport in South Australia AFL.

Johnny if you look closely at this board you will see that the first column 1 to 9 are for the bowlers their names will be added and their stats entered as the game progresses the 2nd column is the batsman in order, their scores will also be added as the game progresses. The other details on the board will include the wickets taken, overs bowled, method of dismisal, extras, total score, the time etc. The old manual scoreboards used to have people insiide them who continually updated all the information which is wtitten on boards and is changed by sliding it into the apprpriate windows on the board . Nowadays at first class grounds the scoreboards are more likely to be digital but there are still some old traditional scoreboards around the world that are still being used even in conjunction with other digital scoreboards around the ground..Cricket has a lot of interesting traditions and one of them is the scoreboard. the Scoreboard is about to be set up by the look of it with Australia V England probably for a 5 day test match.. England V Australia is the oldest rivalry in cricket andd they have been playing each other for the Ashes since the 1882 so far the score is Austraalia has won 33 series England 32 and 40 have been drawn.

Johnny there are two main types of spinning: Leg Spin. The ball spins from right to left. Off Spin. The ball spins from left to right. The best off spin bowler ever was the Sri Lankan "Muttiah Muralitharan". He had a very controversial bowling action that people thought he actually threw the ball instead of bowling. Recommend checking out some highlights. The video of Warne is super old. He is very young in this video.

Elbow injuries are more common in baseball because the ball is thrown with both the shoulder and elbow. In cricket , because bowlers cannot bend their elbows while delivering the ball, the chance of elbow injury is low. But fast bowlers and pacers (as opposed to spinners) get a lot of shoulder injury because they have to generate the speed and bounce with a combination of their run-up, the jump and the shoulder. Spin bowling, slower of the two, doesn't put that much strain on the shoulder. But still injuries are common. On the other hand batsman can get tennis elbows if they bat with a heavier bat and has long careers. One iconic player to get tennis elbow was Sachin Tendulkar. The competition and rivalry between Sachin and Shane in the late 90s, when they were the top batsman and top spin bowler respectively, is a stuff of the legends. If you ever get to see Sachin's desert storm innings' highlights you'll know what I mean. BTW, other players to check out after Shane Warne would be AB De Villiers and MS Dhoni, two of the modern greats. Fans will of course suggest Virat Kohli's name, but in order to understand why he is one of the greatest batsman of all time, you'll need to understand a lot of things about cricket first. ABD and MSD's skills as batsman and keeper respectively is something you can already enjoy and appreciate. One is a beast with a bat, the other is a wizard behind the wickets.

Hey Johnny, I’m loving your reactions. Definitely review the Masterclass as it is also awesome. I’m not sure if you have seen this description of cricket yet, but I thought it may help you 😋 You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game. Simples 😎

And much respect to you JB for continuing your education on cricket. If I don’t like a particular sport I just won’t watch it, and nothing anybody says will change that for me!Not everyone is nuts about cricket here in Australia unlike the Indians. I was more about the beach, girls in bikinis and when is the football season coming back when I was growing up. Although as I’ve grown older I find that I have a better appreciation of what my dad got out of the game. I still say that you should avoid the five day version of the game and just enjoy the T20 version as it won’t bore you to tears!! Excellent review once again. Go Blues!

Hey jb , Glad you’re starting to get cricket. We all knew that if you give it a go, you would start to understand and appreciate the sport. I know it’s hard for you to not compare cricket to baseball . They both have bats and balls , that’s about it . Warnie’s spin bowling is only one aspect of cricket . Dennis Lillee was one of not only the best of Aussie fast bowlers but one of the best fast bowlers in the world in his day . I recommend you check Dennis Lillee out next . The scoreboard in the background will have 11 batsmen’s names that will be the batting order when someone gets out , the next name will come into bat . It’s not innings . 😂. The BBL Big Bash League T20 has just started yes , check some games out . That has one innings each team of 20 overs . One day cricket is limited to 50 overs each team . Test cricket can and often does go for 5 days , it can finish earlier tho , they have 2 innings each team . If you see white outfits it’s test cricket. But I reckon start with the BBL. Good review JB . R.I.P Warnie 😢.

Yes the Big Bash is just starting in Australia and is a T20 tournament. For the purists, like me, it isn't really cricket because it is just swing the bat and hope for the best, score as fast as possible and if you get out then... meh... at least you went down swinging. Most of the nuances and strategies employed in longer form games go out the window and it's just, as we term it, hit and giggle. For you, as a baseball fan, I would suggest it's perfect... the game lasts about the same time... it's fairly easy to see and understand what is going on and there is always a result. Certainly watch these games as you'll be entertained and you will learn things however in the process I would suggest you also watch the series, also beginning soon, between Pakistan and Australia which will include Test matches (the 5 day things) and ODI's (50 over matches similar to the T20 which are 20 over matches). Just a reminder an over is a set of six legal balls and the ODI's and T20 have limited amounts of those sets for each batting side while the Test matches do not. Actually just thinking about it, I would compare a T20 match to a home run derby.. yes there is batters and Pitchers (Bowlers) and there is a field being hit into but there is no nuance... no 'shift' in the field for certain batters... no bringing in a new pitcher to face a certain batter... all those things that are strategies in the longer form game are missing... sure it's fun to watch but the real game is the important thing right?

Great to you’re taking the time to really learn this great game that is cricket. Unfortunately the biggest issue for you was at the state people trying to compare the game to baseball. Reality is, the only real comparison is they both use a bat and ball. It’s like comparing AFL and NFL. 2 completely different games as you know, but great games in their on way. It’s probably been mentioned already, but a bowler will get shoulder injury over time in comparison to a pitcher getting elbow tendon injuries. There’s off spin bowling, swing bowling and fast bowling to look into as well. I’m sure you will enjoy watching some BBL T20. Go Strikers

Test cricket will always be the most important form of the game.

I forgot about shoulder injuries. Warne had a shoulder injury after a fielding accident where he fell on his arm. Cricket players often get injured by throwing the ball in the field. Note to kids, don't practice throwing with a tennis ball. Always use a cricket ball or a baseball. You can get practice balls. If you throw a lighter ball you can injure yourself. Spin bowlers get finger injuries and in the case of wrist spinners, shoulder injury. As a wrist spinner, Warne injuring his shoulder was unfortunate. But he came back from that like a warrior. ❤ Like a wrestler Johnny. 😀 Warne was one of a kind. Ian Botham from England was a great character. And a legendary player. He's still alive (2023). Sir Ian Botham. He was actually knighted for his charity work. He organised runs for causes. He's an interesting man and an absolute legend in cricket. 🏏 "Beefy" Botham. 😀👍

Looks to be the famous heritage-protected Adelaide Oval scoreboard in the background. On Australian scoreboards we list wickets followed by runs - ie 3/78 (three for 78). All other countries list it differently - 78/3 (78 for three). Why? Aussie rules. As you’d be aware, Aussie rules and cricket are played on the same grounds. They share facilities including scoreboards. Old school hand-operated scorecards have room for larger scores on the right hand side, which accommodates scores of 100 or more. I hope that makes sense, but it’s a cool little quirk in Australian sport.

Most common types of injury for leg spin bowlers is to the bowling shoulder (as Warne himself had). Fast bowlers are more likely to get stress fractures of the back and front leg shin due to the repetitive stress of pounding the front foot down in delivery stride. Shane was the best slow bowler but for speed react to a documentary called 'Pace like fire' about the great West Indian fast bowlers of the 1980's.Watching Michael Holding bowl was to see poetry in motion with blinding speed.

Tommy John surgery happens more frequently in baseball as the throw is mainly sidearm. In cricket sidearm is illegal and is called as chucking which can give a bowler lifetime ban, overarm is the conventional legal style and the ligament which you mentioned is not worked up/torn in cricket bowling.

Huge respect for acknowledging your lack of understanding, but also going back and taking another look and learning more. You're right, they are different sports with a whole host of different skills required. Just so you're aware, back in the 90s Australian cricket got some baseball coaches in to teach us how to throw more efficiently from the outfield, we can all learn from each other. Just like NFL getting AFL players in to teach them how to kick. With regards to bowling injuries, cricketers wouldn't see the same type of injuries as baseball pitchers, they're just different actions. Pitchers would be stressing the elbow far more than cricket bowlers. In cricket, depending on the type of bowler you'd see different injuries. Fast bowlers tend to get side strain injuries, back injuries, foot and ankle injuries and toe injuries. Side strains from the arm coming over and the pulling down motion as the ball is released. Back injuries caused by a bad action, the jarring and twisting effect as the front foot comes down at the ball release. foot and ankle injuries from the front landing and toe injuries from the foot slipping inside the shoe and squeezing the toe into the front of the shoe. In fact, some bowlers cut the toe out of the shoe to help prevent that. Spin bowlers will get more hand and elbow injuries, but also shoulder injuries like fast bowlers too, Fingers ripping down the seam of the ball often tears the skin and makes it very painful to continue bowling.

@@stuarthancock571Yes, Shane Warne had sholder surgery, but this was due to a fielding accident and not to do with his bowling. You are partly correct in saying this impacted his bowling, in that made bowling his Flipper more difficult and he couldn't bowl with the same accuracy or consistency as prior to the surgery, but didn't stop him from bowling this delivery. It was also this injury that made him develop the Slider (or 'Zooter' as he called it) to be a more effective delivery..

Good question about Tommy John's surgery. The short answer is no, because cricket bowling rules were invented to prevent the bowler from developing such an injury. In baseball ⚾ the pitcher's elbow is overloaded and overworked to the point of the players needing the surgery. Cricket has bowling instead of pitching to prevent that. The run up adds momentum and saves the arm. Cricket having overs gives the bowlers arm a rest. All of these things prevent injuries to the elbow. But the bowlers get, side strain, groin strain, hip problems and back injuries. 😮

to answer your question at 12 mins in, no, those kind of elbow/arm injuries are less common in cricket amongst bowlers. I think the bowling action is a bit more rhythmic and puts a bit less stress on those joints as the arm gets to wind up its speed a little more. Generally the bigger stresses amongst fast bowlers are more involving the trunk and knees. Stress fractures of the spine are pretty common and caused by the forces when the feet strike the ground in the delivery stride whilst the spine is asymmetrically loaded

I think the scoreboard is set up to show the batters but it doesn't have room to go to 11! the innings are actually on the left if you look closely (they show 2 innings per team so it would be a first class (ie timed) game where each team bats twice. It isn't a regular scoreboard setup for cricket but more like the board is trying to show a cricket scorecard

When you bowl you can't have a bent arm then straighten it as pronounced as you are doing. What you did is a throw. You'd be warned by the umpire and you'd be called 'no ball', have to bowl it again, a run given to the batting team and the batter not given out if bowled, caught or LBW. If you kept doing it you could be barred from bowling in the rest of the match and probably banned from bowling in the future and your bowling action would be subject to testing until you were cleared.

It's a bit hard for you to do the bowling action sitting down, but it is more like a freestyle swimming stroke, with straight arms. The wrist comes in at the very end. As the bowling action requires a straight arm, there isn't much stress on the elbow. Fielders throwing the ball back, can use the normal throwing action, so there is potential for elbow stress there.

Tommy John(?) surgery probably isn’t a problem cricket bowlers have to deal with because they literally bowl the ball (think ten pin bowling but over arm). There’s no flinging their forearm forwards as you would do when throwing or pitching a ball.

I haven’t noticed any videos on rugby union. I don’t know if it’s something you would find interesting, but I would love to see some reactions to it.

I grew up with cricket as the soundtrack to my summer. Not by my choice. So I've always disliked cricket, it goes for a long time and meant I couldn't watch what I wanted on TV as a kid. Obviously because my family likes cricket when I go home in the summer it's still on the TV which switches between tennis and cricket. But when the BBL (Big Bash League) started I could watch a match in the space of an evening (not much longer than a footy match) and suddenly I even knew a few players in 'my' team (Adelaide Strikers). It's in a format that is easier to understand but as my brother tells me, it's not real cricket (he uses his holidays every year to take time off to see the test match). The strategies for Big Bash are hugely different because of the abbreviated format but in my opinion, as someone who hates that the strategy of a test match means that there are 5 long days of men in white outfits on TV, Big Bash is way more entertaining - the whole point is to rack up as many points as quickly as possible so you see batters attempting many hits they wouldn't for a test match.

There are currently 3 forms of Cricket T20, One Day And Test t20 has the same number of players as any form of Cricket but is limited to 20 overs of 6 bowls each per innings maximum is 120 bowls not including byes leg byes and no balls both sides bat and bowl for only one innings highest score wins this is played mostly by domestic teams. One day games these are played over 50 overs maximum bowls being 300 deliveries again not including bye legbyes and no ball again one innings each again highest score wins. Test Cricket is generally played country versus country ie Australia versus England, England versus South Africa as far as I know there are about 12 teams that actually play Test matches Test cricket is generally played over 4 innings over 5 days sometimes shorter ie 4 days. It would take too long to explain how it all works but basically team 1 bats amasses a score then team 2 bats and tries to surpass the first score that team1 made, team1 bats again to overtake team 2s score plus add sufficient to make it almost impossible for team 2 catch them thus winning the game but Cricket is a most fascinating game to watch in its most purest form can be painfully slow to watch but that's what is done

Real cricket is Test cricket. The Big Bash is a recent invention and imo is really just a slog fest. ODI's (One Day International or 50 overs) are OK, but for the real intricacies of the game you need to understand how a Test match works. There's nothing like it. Even over 5 days, a team's fortunes can change in an instant. (PS: Shane Warne was a cricket genius. We all miss him.)

Bowlers dont have elbow issues as it has to be locked when bowling But they do suffer shoulder injuries knees hips and back fast bowler also suffer foot injuries The score board in back ground is over a hundred years old and takes minimum 3 people to operate I think its the last one in existence and being preserved for generations to come Look up Adelaide oval score board history it where im from The 1 to 9 is bats man and their names are placed in the batting order they're ment to come out at fall of wicket Then the umpires names Also bowlers names It will tell you how many balls been bowled in total at every delivery The ammount of ball the individual has bowled and how many wickets they've taken Then there's sundries which is the sides infractions like a no ball the batting team get free run for stepping over line when bowling Can get 4 runs if wicked keeper can't catch ball and makes to boundary line otherwise what ever they run why its being retrieved Same goes with return throws if are wild of mark or no one backing up stumps This is why sometimes a close in fielder wont throw the ball and conceed the run or run out if there's not someone one to retrieved the thrown ball as could give 4 runs away Think of in shooting you dont want to be in cross fire Well in cricket you always want someone in cross fire to retrieve the ball Nar mate dont be so hard on yourself your going to get things wrong as it foreign to you and learning Would say your that if you knew the rules and understood the game and then said those things But if you dont know you dont know and only learn from asking Your comments allow us to understand what path you're thinking andwe can guide you on the right path These people that jump on people are way worse because if the sho was on the other foot them learning another sport They'd be in same predicaments and asking as well saying thing they dont quire understand Its human nature to surmise something as we use other life experiences to fill in what we dont know and generally works well So your doing very well with little knowledge enjoy the learning experience You obviously have a active and inquisitive mind to learn different things in life Ho Ho Merry xmas 😉 to you and family stay safe enjoy the break if you get one Cheers mate🦘🇦🇺👍

Yo wats good Johnny Basement Hey, how's it going, my fellow sports buddy, bro? I got another cricket video for you to react to. The cricket video is called Ab De Villers Fastest 100 Of All Time. KZbin Video By KZbinr Super Sport. I know ya going to have questions about well Tommy what is this Ab De Villers and so in cricket? An Ab De Villers is like (imagine in baseball where the base ball batter that makes a lot of massive homeruns continously on and on (which is like making an automatic 6 runs in cricket when the ball goes into the crowd and or out of the stadium).

G'day JB, I think the main injuries for a bowler is in the shoulder more so than the elbow. Maybe lower back too. Spin bowling is an art form. Cricket is like a game of chess. Also the rules of cricket are easy once you know the rules 😂 🫶
