@@bfb187 So I’m an older guy who had the privilege of watching Bob Skilton. Triple Brownlow medallist so far above the ability and skill of Greene. Brownlow is “fairest” and best. When Skilton wanted the ball other players in his way would bounce off him in all directions, without him using the slightest bit of malice/elbow and always bumping them fairly. Off the field he is the greatest gentleman. He has much more reason to run around with his head stuck in the air like Greene, but never would. Give me Skilton’s type any day.

The guy with the left hook at (4:40) was Barry Hall, he was suspended for 7 games after this, (incidentally , later in this game, Barry went on to break his own wrist which woulda put him out for even longer) His victim was Brent Staker who later went on to play for the Lions. The other incident involving the Lions player being set up and then knocked down at(9:00) the setting up player was none other than Gary Ablett jr. Players have a duty of care to protect the head (of opposition players). So when players have their head over the ball (when they're bending over trying to pick it up) if you come in with an intent, you better beware that it's all on you to make sure that the other players head is not in any danger. That's why some players can be suspended for "unintentional" injuries or concussions. "Unintentional" is not an excuse they can give at the Match Review Tribunal. "Unintentional" might get them a less severe grading (of the offence) but it ain't gonna get 'em off.

There is a you tube video called 'AFL top ten enforcers' which shows the name, number of times they were reported for whatever and the number of weeks they were suspended from playing. It also shows what they did. A thing you should note is that a few of them were champion players winning the AFL equivalent of the MVP (ironically called The Brownlow Medal awarded to the Fairest and Best player with the emphasis on fairest), highest goal scorer in the league (a guy who was suspended for more than 20 weeks) and so on. Dermot Brereton played a full game with two broken ribs, Leigh Matthews ran into a point post so hard he snapped it in two To my mind the hardest man was Tony Locket, the most insane was Robbie Muir, Mal Brown was pure street fighter and Carl Dietrich was just a loose battleship.

I really felt for Robert Muir. I read a book and listened to an interview from him. he wasn't making any excuses for his brain snaps, but when you hear what they were saying to him, the disgusting names they called him, the filth they were saying about his mum, constantly, ....... he asked for help, unfortunately, this was the age of just suck it up, get over it, over and over again. Nobody ever stood up for Robbie, ever. Not his team mates, the VFL, nobody. racism and disgusting baiting wasn't a thing back then People have said now they wished they'd done something to help him, BS. Robbie was aboriginal He was a very talented footballer He might be the most racially vilified player to ever play, and they all thought it was funny to see him lose his lolly They broke him, you know.

The punch at 7:00.. that was the Andrew Gaff king hit on Andrew Brayshaw. It not only broke his jaw, but he lost a couple of teeth from it. They were able to get them back in, but that single hit cost Gaff 9 matches.. and sadly enough, West Coast won the premiership that year. Gaff missed out on the match, suspended. You could see he was remorseful about it, and props to Ross Lyon, for telling his guys to keep it cool, because they ALL wanted to go after Gaff from that. Brayshaw was 19 at the time.. making it worse, his mother was in the stands for that match, as it was the western derby, between Fremantle and West Coast.

heres a few things about "hits" and how the MRC makes decisions on penalties. 1) where the contact is (high = head / neck, torso or low (knees and ankles), 2) Impact (high, medium, low). These are based upon doctors assessments at the time, 3) Intent - was the player specifically targeted to bump, and during that bump was the arm raised to increase the impact?. So if you are going head to head with someone, and you elect to bump and jump to deliver it, you are in a world of trouble, and if you raise your arm to make contact then you must expect a (Very) long holiday. Knocking the guy out is "high impact with malicious intent and recklessness". 8 games or more. If you just smash the guy and he gets up again, you MIGHT get away with it completely. Defensive motion of the arms is taken into account.

The guy you're talking about with the southpaw is Barry Hall. He played for St. Kilda, and then was traded to Sydney. He was captain of the team at this time. If I remember right, this was during the Sydney/West Coast rivalry that was between 2005 and 2006. I won't say what happened with that rivalry because .. well.. it rivals the Boston Red Sox/NY Yankees rivalry, and is one for the ages. @@athlonen Part of the reason I can’t stand Barry Hall is after 2006. He played a bad game and blamed himself for losing the 2006 GF. He sulked and sooked not just after the game, but for the entire following season. Everyone has a bad game, but the truly great players get over it quickly. It was either after the 2007 season or thereabouts, that he and the Swans parted ways. He acted like a little kid, so that plus the Brent Staker incident put me right off him. I threatened to stop following the Swans when I heard Lockett was coming. However when Paul Kelly read him the riot act and virtually changed him overnight, I accepted him.

Most viewers love to see a tough sport, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. The day a football-based sport turns into a wrestling, boxing, and martial arts competition, you may as well watch the UFC. Also, parents with young children who are developing an interest in the sport will either deter or prevent their kids from participating in the sport while they are young. No one wants to see a football lying on the ground at one end of the ground with a bunch of players trying to kill each other at the other end of the ground. It also affects team and player sponsors if their name is suddenly tied to bad sportsmanship. Finally, all players should expect to be able to return home after every game, not be taken to a hospital.

i think a lot of people new to the sport (not saying you tho mate!) might wonder why we dont have soccer-style red card instant suspensions, but just knowing that the AFL Tribunal (like a court process, complete with very expensive lawyers) will fine you and suspend you for several games still achieves the same desired result. Also it allows the other team to give a little bit of payback to the offender!

The left uppercut at 6:30 was a west coast player (Andrew Gaff) hitting his best friend (who played for the other team). The hit was intended to be in the shoulder but if you watch theres a little dip and it cracked him on the point of the jaw. You can see that from the way he punched him..it wasnt a direct "take that" smack. The player who did the hit was in tears on the bench after they pulled him off (cos someone was gonna kill him if he stayed on the field). It was the 2nd or 3rd last game of the season with West Coast sitting very high on the ladder and set to play finals, and Gaff got an 8 game suspension, meaning it was the end of the season for him, plus missed 3 games in the next season. I hate Gaff, but he is ALWAYS a clean player, and this was a tragic "miscalculation". Bear in mind also, that most things are NOT reported (flag thrown in NFL) by the on field umpires. There is a group called the "Match review committee" that watches every minute of every game and hands out fines and suspensions post match. A player suspended by the MRC has the right to decline the penalty and go to the tribunal for an official hearing. 99.5% of the time they will NOT take that option because the tribunal will uphold the MRC decision and hit you with (at least) twice the penalty.

at 8:43 you missed the illegal push in the back that forced him to run head long into the player who was providing a sheperd that turned into a high shot that the lions player had no way to avoid. That's two bad acts from two players in concert... That's how you measure a teams dirty tactics - the willingness of the many to adopt poor sportsmanship within one team. It happens from time to time, it can actually create lifelong enmity for certain clubs from other clubs supporters, which is rare in modern times. The reason being, it's more difficult to get away with bad acts now so you're likely to be caught. Earlier in the games history, with the advent of cameras, we saw rules not existing for certain players from particular clubs which was made obvious when the VFL became the AFL. I was a swannies supporter and have a VFL scarf before there was a team in qld. That and I was just a little kid in NSW at the time, I can't be held accountable for my father's "team". I chose the lions when the bears and Richmond joined. I liked the bears, but they were really mismanaging the team. Entire budget on Warwick Capper indeed! The shock was when the bears won a game in the 80's.

I've been giving your top 4 teams some thought, and here's my 2 cents worth. Full disclosure: I'm a Bombers fan so straight off the bat you know what my suggestion is going to be. First off I think you should scratch Collingwood, and probably not for the reason you think. You crossed Geelong off your list because you didn't want to seem like you were jumping on a bandwagon, and I reckon you should get rid of the magpies for the same reason. Of course the American is going to support the team with an American playing for them. Too obvious. Give them a miss. Then scratch the Hawks. Not for any old Essendon/Hawthorn Line In The Sand rivalries either. I just personally think they are likely to end up a bottom 4 side this year, and don't think that is how you should spend your first season as an AFL supporter. That, and they are still currently embroiled in an ugly racism scandal, which is likely to distract from their football this season. Brisbane. I've got nothing against Brisbane and think they should be your second choice. Although, even after all this time I still think of them as the Fitzroy Lions. I know the merger was all about economics and the expansion of the league, but if I was a Fitzroy fan and my club moved a couple of thousand kilometers away, I would have been mighty upset. Still, they'll do well this year. Now, the Bombers. I could give you a ton of reasons why I think you should get behind the Dons, but I'll just give you one. I think you should have some skin in the game for the ANZAC day match. Every season, Essendon play Collingwood on ANZAC day. It is the 2nd biggest game of the year, only behind the grand final. It's a public holiday here, which guarantees massive attendance, and the match has a lot of cultural significance woven into it. I reckon it will give you a chance to learn a bit more about Australian culture beyond the football. And since we've already eliminated Collingwood, that just leaves Essendon ;) Seriously though, loving the channel & happy with whatever team you pick.

judd got away with a lot of grubby stuff, just because he was highly rated there's a lot of grubs now, dangerfield is heading that way, he can't catch the younger blokes, so he, like other older players, goes for the 'breaker'. It might not seem much, but, when you've got blokes in their 30's bashing kids, 19, 20, 21, those young ones don't have the hardened bodies of the older dudes. That's the cheap shots. The 'callers'/commentators make fun of it, like the Gaff/Bradshaw incident, but it's not funny. It's violent, it can end careers and it's totally uncalled for. It's old men no longer able to keep up, so, they belt the kids, extra hard and get away with it because of their names and 'star' power. it's bs and they need to be punished

The National Rugby League (NRL) is equal in popularity to the AFL but is more brutal and violent and. It also has a 3 match series once a year called State of origin which is especially brutal.

Brisbane Lions will play finals, Magpies probably will, the others have got no chance in hell. My top four picks Melbourne Demons, lions, cats and swans . Go Demons 🔴🔵

There is a guy who does a wrap up of the suspensions among other things every week for the AFL. This is his 2022 wrap up. He details exactly what the findings are which may give you a better idea of what is and isn't allowed kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ7SmpKli75phNk

😂Bit like yourself, you must be becoming a Victorian real anti any other footy team that is outside Victoria. From what I seen they were all as bad each other. So a back hand to the head is weak and yet direct and intended elbow to the head knocking the player out, isn't weak. I say it is down right dirty and bad sports person. Please if you want to learn the rules and suspensions you should listen mate and you will learn a lot more. Enjoy the footy mate and let the best team Win. The best is from the West. 🇦🇺✌️🎶🏖️🏉🎽🦅🇦🇺

Byron Picket for Port Adelaide did not make contact with the Adelaide crows actor head they showed multiple angles of that incident and at very most he may have brushed his hair, the head never moved so why act? 13 minute mark of the video
