Bro, I appreciate you sharing your story. I had the same thing happen to me. I did what I did because I was fresh out of college, drowning in debt, & got laid off from a decent job. Giving me a felony, fining me 10x of what I got popped for, & years of probation. It got wayy worse until I got lucky & was gifted a great job. That situation radicalized me in a big way. Akala & Lowkey became huge inspirations after I read about the things in their lyrics.

Good idea getting your UK ear in before doing more Akala; I don't feel he has much of an accent compared to some rappers but he uses a fair bitta, diverse slang (patois to cockney rhyming), innit. BTW if you get 'shit' from Brits, please do take it with a pinch of salt (do y'all use that phrase?!) as we 'take the piss' out of people we like, but some of the ways we express ourselves can come across harsh to the uninitiated. As a black man int he uk with ambition. Akala was my inspiration. One of the few examples showing a different way. I saw him live, his speakers stopped working and he did a freestyle acapella and it was exactly as it sounds on KZbin. Unreal. His lyrics are beyond rap or music. In my opinion no one is in his level. Lowkey is close maybe but no. This man.

Love Akala. He is definitely one of a kind and all his Fitb are great. The 2nd one is my fav. You have to hear Akala- Find No Enemy. Its a masterpiece 🔥🔥. I'm American too and it took me a few listens to get used to the accent but you get used to it. Black the ripper is another great one from the UK but he passed away last year unfortunately.

But now that I’ve grown familiar with artists like ghetts, Jordan; fredo, lowkey, mic righteous, Dave etc… it helps me understand artists like Akala or Kano. They are very knowledgeable and lean on their accents a bit heavy at times when in the heat of the moment. Now I can hear/see through some of it. I can now enjoy 80% of what I’m listening to 🙏
