All Buffalos are nice, but I prefer a straight up BU. The prevalence of the rim unevenness is a bit annoying, though. First world problems, I guess. 😄

I've got some Gold Buffalos where the edge of the rim seems like it's a millimeter thinner on one side than it is on the opposite side. Mehh. Pure gold is a soft metal. When it's physically struck real hard, I'm sure there are going to be some imperfections here and there.

I just got a BU, and it had a bit of a dent in the ridges. But it kind of took a bit of the worry out of it, and I don't mind handling it at all.

I think its smart to have mainly BU, and a couple graded coins… if a time comes and you need the money badly, you’ll get most of that premium back on a graded coin

Can anyone explain to me what the background/finish design is supposed to be. Even on the high contrast polished proof, the ugly haze/flaky background makes it look terrible imo. Is it trying to mimic a grassy plain or something?

Yeah, I see what you mean. It looks like a crinkled up piece of paper was flattened back out. I think it's designed to give it an older look.

Truth on the premiums. My LCS sells proofs for the same price as BU because that’s how they buy them, as bullion, not as collector pieces. I pick them up when I find them because there are those who will pay more for them, I happily oblige, then buy more bullion 😎

BU Buffalos look absolutely amazing to my eye, one of the most beautiful coins ever - so rough and sexy, proof shining doesn't suit this coin at all. However, I guess, I always prefer the looks of Gold bullions, and Silver proofs in general.

The proof are far more valuable in the long run especially if you can accumulate a date run. Proof are the way to go for passing on wealth to the next generation and will go far higher due to the limited circulating amount. Selling to you LCS is a bad idea to begin with.

When you want a perfect example of a coin buy a proof. Then buy all the BU or lower grades you like.

Right on man. Reverse proofs are hard to find. When they do pop up, they are quickly snagged. Cheapest one I saw recently was $2500. It's nice but not that nice

It depends on what your personal preference is. Anything proof will always be better than BU. I find stackers usually go for BU gold Eagles. Collectors go for proofs and if you are both a collector and a stacker, then collect both the proof and the BU.

I did get a proof 2006 buffalo at my LCS for the same price as BU buffalo or Eagle. Two tiny brown marks (copper?) on it though but still happy with it.

Nice dude! Yeah, copper spots. It's not in the gold but microscopic copper particles floating around in the mint which land on the coins before they are sealed up.

True and valid reason to buy from only a reputable LCS. Fake gold is easy to pick out since the metal is difficult to replicate. The weight of the fakes is always off unless it's a collectible coin.

Great question. I don't know about the variety of labels they released and I'm not sure anyone would know about it. Labels have to be requested if there is a special release and often cost a little more. Some are unique to a specific coin's release. But one would have to know how many different labels were used and I doubt anyone other than a grading agency would know. I know some command a higher price but couldn't tell you which ones. Let me look into it. If I get an answer, it will be in my monthly Q&A vids.

IMO the American Buffalo is one coin design that is not improved by the proof finish. The design is rugged and captures the spirit of the early west. Polishing the background does not go along with that visually. Many other coins have a design which looks better proofed. The Buff is my favorite coin.

I’m in agreement with you as it goes against my principles for buying graded modern bullion. However when the price is right and it’s a perfect grade, hard to pass up. Plus the capsule protects it but I like handling my bullion

The buffalo is the only gold coin I sold because I thought it was ugly. I can't wait for the the us mint to change this design. I also hate how the eagles, a far superior design is not .9999 gold. They should make a St. Gaudens Eagle that is .9999. Instead of doing two half assed coins, make one perfect one.
