To me, Danny dying is even more tragic for Derek than if he had died. Because now Derek has to live the rest of his life knowing that he set his brother on that path that got him killed. And even though the movie doesn't go into it, it's just as tragic for the young black boy who threw his life away just to prove a point...and now he'll waste away in prison.

There were supposed to be more scenes of the young buck but they were cut from the film. The initial intention was to correlate both Danny and the young kid and how they both being "nurtured" by their stereotyped by pigeon-holed familial surroundings (with Danny it was Derek and the neo-Nazis, with the young kid it was the gangland inner city thugs from the basketball court), that they were both INITIALLY innocent and very similar until they were conditioned and mentally washed into a warped belief system. Similar to reality where hate is typically taught as opposed to openly learned from unbiased experience. Personally I feel that's why immediately after shooting Danny the expression on the boys face goes from "fuck you" to washed over with immediate regret and settled upon "what did I just do".

@@EOMReacts I could feel the tragic ending coming too, but it was such a suckerpunch in the gut as it made me realize that in spite of turning around and trying to make things right... It ended up just starting a cycle all over for someone else and possibly the biggest tragedy of the film: The kid whose threw his life away for nothing. 😥 But that is also what I love about this film. It simultaneously helps people to understand the mentality that fuels racism while simultaneously showing the stupidity and destruction it breeds. 😪

Not really. The reason he was killed I because of the black gang member who was going down the same path as Danny, but nobody was able to reach out to him before it was too late.

Never notice that they're paid a second thought to it to be honest. I didn't see this when I was younger and I also don't care about basketball so I'm probably not the best one to talk about it. Yeah maybe it's a bit of a stretch to think he could but I've seen some white guy on KZbin doing the craziest dunks and Edward Norton is 6 ft tall so it's not like he's like 5'6.. still it's unlikely but I think it's silly to laugh at it for the reason of, oh,a white guy can't dunk.
@benraffe1817
@benraffe1817 Ай бұрын
The most unbelievable part about this scene is the fact that the white guys won that game, and on top of that they were working with the handicap of having Seth on the team.
@sunnyj210
@sunnyj210 Ай бұрын
@benraffe1817 I've been sayin' this. Dont get me wrong, my high school was very racially mixed & I knew sum white boys that could hold their own with the black dudes in a pick up game.. But Ed Norton who's like 5'7 & ethan suplee weighing in at 500 sloppy lbs' aren't that. After the bus jumping a 50 ft gap in speed- most unbelievable scene we all just accepted & moved on from in movie history!!
@benraffe1817
@benraffe1817 Ай бұрын
@sunnyj210 I'd say to make it more believable they should have had Seth sitting on the sidelines so they had 5 athletic guys playing, and instead had Edward Norton hit a layup after he intercepted the ball instead of a dunk. That would at least make it in the realm of possibilities.

Danny wrote "People look at me and see my brother." The movie is from Danny's perspective but we're focused on his brothers story. Danny narrates, he initiates the flashbacks, and when he gets Derrick to tell him about prison we are hearing all of it for the first time along with Danny. As they take the nazi stuff down from the wall, Danny is reading his report to Sweeney and sharing about the growth that he has went through since the beginning of the movie. Loved your reaction, you're a naturally funny guy and have a good grasp on what is real racism and when it's a parody of racism. That song he sings in the van about the zoo is so far over the top that it had to be parody. Great content!

@nattyps3160
@nattyps3160 2 ай бұрын
Exactly thats why the director quit & Norton took over the film. Honestly it's either way for me I think the director wanted to show the cycle of violence never stops which is what played out. The dad was racist instead of Derek seeing it as some dirtbag killed his dad he put together what his dad said. I don't think Derek or Danny believed all that crap. Also Derek still lived in a nice house in the suburbs & screwed his whole family more. The mom had to sell their house for his defense so he only did a few years for a savage murder. Yes those guys couldn't leave alone a stupid ball game so they broke into his truck. But u call the cops u don't go vigilante & murder one man shoot the other now disarmed & curb stomp him ! He should have got 20 years. Anyway Derek hooking up w/ some old white racist coward led Danny to take his place. In the 90s l.a. racial relations were a mess. Not even black & white but black & Koreans had serious issues if u watch the rodney king doc or oj made in america. It's the best documentary about race in America tied to oj b/c most people didn't even know oj w/ football ( I'm talking the young 20s older ladies girls etc it was the media who pumped it up as racial b/c that sells ) but anyway what a waste of time oj if he was a nobody done in a 2 week trial. Or as one reporter Said " if oj killed first wife black marguerrite his butt would be in prison. Nicole was a blonde beautiful white woman & it's scary how many black women ( they made up 9 of the 12 jurors ) would call in trashing Nicole. Marcia said she always did " well" w/ female black jurors. Wow she really didn't get it. Oj even looked at the jury which was 9 black women one white woman a black man & a Mexican man. One jurors admitted she acquitted knew he did it & said payback. Another black juror the forewoman said " what does d.v. hsve to do w/ murder " wow!! Um he was beating the crap out of her escalating for years & she didn't get that connection. Like a pattern of violence. That she was property that got away ? Anyway sadly their will always be biases even within ur color or class or religion or gender. Honestly the legal system is a joke I get it b/c they want to move things out of their courts cause u do have cops that just target people. I'm talking over like meeting their youth for speeding tickets. It's like hey rake this plea we will lie & say parking violation but pay 250$ ojs trial easily 2 weeks & done. Anyway the movie was really good I'm glad it ended w/ Derek not becoming a native again. First off he already turned on them the night b4. 2nd he was now on parole his mom was shown chain smoking from stress that Derek mostly brought her. She still seemed positive a couple years after hee husband died. Looking good still cooking family dinners had her 4th chiod who was about 2 kept the house looking good. What would be accomplished as Derek got the b.s by even avenging his brother. His mom probably wanted her life over if not for her little daughter as the elder sister was old enough to be on her own. I feel the worst for Derek's mom. She probably thought her husband was a jerk b/c she after his death clearly hated Derek's racist thinking. This poor woman had 4 kids to raise had to cover her sons prison fees literally that family lived in a tiny apt where again the poor mom paying for everyone I'm sure off her husband's pension working food stamps whatever was sleeping on the couch while Danny had the big room to himself ??!! I get he was in hs but let ur mama have the bedroom. Again that woman was coughing blood b/c of the idiot males in her life. If the husband wasn't really actually jealous that Derek admired his black teacher calling him" 2 Mr p.h.d.s" yea bet Mr fireman didn't have that. To go after ur son telling him " open ur mind " that's um what his teacher was trying to do the book was about native Americans I guess white dad was very threatened by learning how white people robbed this country& committed genocide. Ugh. I think the stupid kid who got Danny my God killing a kid in h.s.is worth prison ??? Cause he blew smoke in ur face. ? Good lord

@@Del-Blanco-Diablo lmao! You know it! To have an honest discussion, you have to have an environment that allows it. Race relations problems in America are a two way street. Conservatives will have you believe it's always BIPOC/Jews, and liberals will have you believe it's always White Christians (specifically male, but sometimes a "Karen). It's sickening, and quite frankly, everyone outta be ashamed of themselves because everyone shares the blame to some extent or another either through active participation or silence. I kinda blame the two-party system for this- the polarization aspect of it, that is. The extremists on both ends are terrible and unfortunately those extremes negatively impact a lot for even those who don't want to be bothered by all the foolishness. This is the 21st century. We should all be able to get along at this point.

Honest emotions, not afraid to admit misjudgements and funny AF. Not many folk can make me want to cry with sorrow, and laugh out of banter, at the same time.

This movie never gets any less enraging or heart-wrenching for me, no matter how many times I watch it. It portrays the vicious cycle of violence so well without being "preachy." On a very different note... 11:37 "Damn you can't eat a black jelly bean?" 18:06 "Nah bro, you way past husky. You're fat." Even in a movie this heavy, you managed to bring some laughter.

I grew up in a military family, where there was no racism visible around us. Like R. Lee Ermy said in Full Metal Jacket, there was no black, no white, no red, or yellow...everyone was green, and equally worthless. Dad retired when I was 12, and shortly after that there was a story about racism on 60 Minutes, and both of my parents were sitting there yelling the most vile racist shit I'd ever heard. I ran away from home for 2 days because I couldn't handle the truth about my family. When I saw this movie in the theater it all came crashing home again (I was in my early 30's). My wife had to tug my arm to get me to get up and leave after the closing credits because I was just in shock.

Danny was doomed to die from the moment he met Little Henry in the toilets, Henry was being brainwashed in the same way that Danny was by the man you saw him talking to (when Henry pointed him out). That's part of the message of the film, beware the cycles of hate, Sweeney was like Derrick & managed to save him, but Danny was killed & Henry is now where Derrick before being sent to prison.

Only difference is, you can see Henry's facial expression after shooting Danny, seems like he has a look of "oh shit, i just did that. i just killed this kid". That's what I get, at least. I see it in his eyes when he opens them up more. He wasn't grinning like Derek was

I've always found this a painfully difficult movie to watch. Can't imagine how much harder it would be to watch as a black man or a as a Jew. That said, there are really some profound statements made in this movie about racism, how hate is learned/taught, tribalism, and how hard it is to break the cycle of its self perpetuation. Just really well made and important.

I never saw the B&W scenes as being that way to denote flashbacks honestly. Maybe that was the only intention but I've always viewed it to reflect Derek's mentality, back when the hatred was everything so he saw the world in black and white terms (racially and figuratively) but any of us that have lived at all know the real world isn't a simple black-and-white situation, scenarios aren't simple black-and-white in reasoning. After Derek chronologically gets out of prison and has become a changed man the "world" is now in color as he's seeing the whole spectrum of it, the myriad of tones and colors he was previously blinded to. Maybe it is just intended to be "hey here's a flashback" but that's the great thing about art, the audience themselves has their own interpretation.
@zeallust8542
@zeallust8542 Жыл бұрын
Even looking at the flashbacks, the more open and understanding he gets it gets less and less black and white. Compare the curb stomp scene to the later scenes with his homeboy in prison. The last few flashbacks arent entirely black and white. Because his mentality changed.

First time watching and I must say, this was a amazing reaction to a powerful film. I love how you analyzed certain aspects of the film when watching. The biggest component that you briefly touched on but may be missed was that Cameron was a predator who would recruit vulnerable targets to his cause. Derrick and Danny having lost their father who was shot by a drug dealer in Compton while battling a fire making them prime candidates. The black and white transition as past was significant as it represented the basis of the overall story was a story of black and white. Sadly I had to pause for about 10 minutes because of the tears in my eyes because after “Me and whistling butthole is murdering everything and they’re gonna hear me coming”, I lost my shit. That was the best reactionary line I have ever heard in my life to any reaction video I have ever watched. You sir have earned a faithful subscriber and viewer. Keep it real man!!

I went to rent this movie from the video store (yep, we are about the same age) when it was first released and was super self-conscious.
