I got choked up myself when you were talking about brining your dogs to see you when you’re gone, so they know you didn’t abandon them. I’ve heard of people who give their dogs away because they’re not entertaining anymore or they move to a new house and they’re now inconvenient. This is unbelievable to me. All dogs want is to love you and make you happy. They think (and are) your family. How can people turn their backs on that? They trust you. It kills me every single time I just have to drop my dogs off at the vet. Just the thought in my mind that they might think I’ve given them away and don’t want them anymore is heartbreaking. For the record, if I ever get thrown out on the street, my dogs are coming with me. If it’s the end of the world and I have a couple of bites of food left before I starve to death, they’re getting a bite too. Sorry for my rant but it just came out of me.

I used to work for the city hall in my small town and part of the job was being dogcatcher sometimes and we took them all to a local no kill shelter in the next town about 10 miles away. It still to this day breaks my heart because most of the time it was people who got puppies and when they got bigger and became too much for them they just threw them out in the streets. 😢. So many people are cruel to animals! 😡

This movie is phenomenal. TBF, Clint sacrificing himself for the kid and family hits harder than a Rambo shoot-em-up moment. Also, he was spitting up blood from cancer so it wasn't like his quality of life was up there. In a time when the country is so divided and the media is pushing divisive messages and tribalism, with social media amplifying the worst and most toxic voices, we certainly need more people like Sue Lor, bridging the gap between people with different personalities and viewpoints.

Walt was a veteran with PTSD and survivor guilt, every war veteran who saw combat and lost friends carries that grief and anguish for the rest of their lives, for a society that has long forgotten their sacrifices. Clint had a colorful way of speaking and no filter, just true to himself, there was not a single act of racism in this film. I really like your reactions, you are perceptive, funny, and you have a great heart.

@@Gnossiene369 - To be honest, I'd be kind of bitter if I were Walt. He hoped to retire in a peaceful and pleasant neighborhood. Instead, it filled up with immigrants and gangs, and Walt had to watch it all go downhill as his property value went to nothing. At least Walt didn't live long enough to see what it's like there today. Property values are in the toilet. You can buy a three or four bedroom house there cheaper than buying a new car.

Once I saw him cutting his grass and taking a bubble bath, I knew what was coming. Cutting his hair, the new suit, it was obvious to me he was not planning on living past that day. He has pride in how his house looks, his lawn his property and so he was tidying up before he died.

I don't think Walt was racist. I think he had demons that made him angry at the world. The girl brought him out of it. She accepted him as he was. He needed that. He did bad things in Vietnam and the media and public condemned Vietnam Vets when they returned home. That added to the guilt he felt. He was also dealing with the loss of his wife.

it's not how we wanted it to go, but it was the best Walt could give. He was old, he was dying, he had many regrets. This was his way to leave the world in a way that left people with a good image of him, instead of seeing him waste away to sickness while becoming more and more bitter and resentful.

My uncle Edmond was just like him, a war hero code talker who didnt take an inch of $#!T when he came back. Notorious for beating down cops for drinking in public, notorious for standing up for his military friends (including my mom). When he died, 3000 showed up in this small town... and we fed them all a traditional meal (3 sheeps and 2 cows). He knew he was going to die, he sacrificed himself for Thau. The Canon or rifle you were referring to was his service rifle from the Korean war, it's an M1 Garand, used during WW2 also. I have a M1 Bayonet here in Ireland, I actually got in Normandy France. You'll see in a lot of Clint eastwood movies when he smokes he says "Got a light". Brilliant reaction.

Clint Eastwood became a legend in youth, with a career that started in the 1950s. After his legendary youth, he REALLY became great. A true late bloomer, his acting got better and better once he got into his fifties. His directing career has mostly been a series of masterpieces, starting with 1988's "Bird". Don't worry, dogs are very smart and spiritual animals. They understand when we die, they feel it. My mom's little ancient dog died the day after she died. I didn't have to show him her body, he was half blind by then anyway and couldn't see if I tried to. He just laid down in her kitchen and never woke up.

Really glad you watched this. (You said you had to stop watching these sad movies about a month ago!) It was a good plan. He was coughing up blood; all he had in store for him was a painful time left, so he killed two birds by relieving himself of the extended period of sickness and jailing the hoodlums. He got them to convict themselves and he was not commiting any more killings; he was just lighting his cigarette.

Walt on this movie was just like my dad---a Korean War vet himself, who actually taught me that rhyme ("spectacles, testicles, wallet & watch") when I was getting ready to leave the house to make sure I had what I needed. I saw this movie with my dad and turned to him and told him "they made a movie about your life!" and we both loved it. Love how much you love your puppies--ours are equally important to us. If you want to see more Eastwood, there's Rawhide; a tv series about cowboys herding steers to the train station. Each episode is 30 minutes. The theme song was used in The Blues Brothers movie. A movie would be The Good The Bad and The Ugly where three men tried to find buried gold. My favorite is Unforgiven about a retired outlaw collecting a bounty with Morgan Freeman..

I think it has something to do with our age , I have cried more in the last few years then I have my whole life. Movie with heavy subjects like Clint Eastwoods character and how his own family only see him as a dollar sign , and having a closer relationship with strangers. Just the little things that strikes me all the time. I can’t see the green mile without something to blow my nose . It is not a sign of weakness it’s just means you have a big heart. 18:05 a community is a community. When no one cares about the community you end up with Detroit. Every tiny thing, from picking up a piece of trash, cleaning the dirt off your home's windows, every tiny thing makes your community better. You don't just do it for yourself, you do it for everyone around you. Otherwise it wouldn't be a community. Imagine how much a person would save money wise if everyone in their neighborhood would pitch in and help them shingle their roof for example? Collectively they could get it done in a weekend, and make an eye sore of the neighborhood look almost brand new. Repeat that over a life time, making bonds/friendships along the way. That is a community. Issue is people have been forgetting this and it's sad. Within our own family we do this. I've done so many roofs, pulled so many wires, fixed so many pipes it isn't funny, often for a pizza and some cola as payment from an uncle/aunt.

The number of stories I've heard from people who were once suicidal that changed their minds at the last moment because they thought about who was going to take care of their pets is both too many and not enough. Not everyone deserve to have a pet, of course. There are people who will never be anything but cruel, careless, and evil. Loved your reaction. I am 72 and I can tell you that none of the words he used were nade up. I am a Vietnam vet and heard them and more. Never was much of a gutter talker myself but heard lots of it. It is amazing that you have never seen a hand-powered lawn mower, really makes me feel ancient.

This movie was not set in Detroit MI. This is an accurate depiction of St. Paul MN. The screen play was written at a bar in North East Minneapolis MN. St. Paul MN has the greatest number of Hmong people in the United States. They were invited here because they fought along side American soldiers during the Vietnam War. We are lucky to have them with us. Good folks.

Sorry to rain on your parade this movie was filmed in Detroit,mi the whole movie..yes that's cool minn as Hmong ppl I'm sure some extras were selected from there but the movie was filmed here and depicted a vet who fought in the Korean war settle down in Michigan and raised his family..I'm from Detroit I witnessed the filming .
