All of a sudden I decided to binge Chris' reviews because I had nothing to do. And I know a lot of people didn't like this movie but I agree with Chris this movie was so good. The acting the script, the score. And like Chris said it was always ON. I never was bored, I just loved it. Christian Bale did such a great job so did Amy Adams. But Jennifer Lawrence, man she just blew me away with this.

I'll need to watch it again since I've only seen it once but I was left feeling unsatisfied after watching it. I dunno, maybe because it was soooo hyped up with the large cast and all the big stuff happening that I let it suck me in and I was expecting more than what I received. So, it's due for a rewatch.

Give it another watch. It was critically acclaimed (90s on RT w/ an average rating of 8.3/10 and a 90 on MC) for a good reason. Jennifer Lawrence gives a fantastic and totally unhinged, crazy performance (in the best way) and it honestly might be her best role/acting, sans Winter's Bone and/or mother!. The film is also David O. Russell's greatest work, for sure. Flirting with Disaster and Silver Linings Playbook are both really good (4 out of 5 stars) and Three Kings and The Fighter are great (4 1/2 out of 5 stars), but this is a brilliant, near-masterpiece. 4 3/4 stars or A.

SPOILERS (i guess, how the hell would i know?) well, as i was watching this movie earlier tonight i was thinking the same thing the entire time and when the credits started rolling it was confirmed: "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!" I understood that bale and adams were con artists and cooper was fbi trying to blackmail them into... doing something. but that's it. what that something was i will never know. there was a shiek who wasn't real. there was a mayor who they were trying to catch doing... something with bribes? and for some reason the mafia shows up and their role in this was...something bad maybe? oh and bale and adams were lovers in one scene and wanted nothing to do with each other in another scene for seemingly no reason because they spent most of the movie apart. then they were magically together again at the end and they somehow did something that screwed the fbi? i don't understand the technical business stuff. WHAT WAS THE CON? WHO WAS THE CON ON BY WHOM? AND WHO WAS CONNING THE CON AND WHY? no movie in the last several years has made me feel this stupid and ashamed. thankfully there was much humor in the movie that didn't depend on my understanding of the unexplained and complicated plot of the cons or i would have been truly pissed. i felt like i belonged in a college course for idiots and not in a movie theater. i enjoyed the performances and the plot seemed almost understandable but just enough to infuriate me at how much i didn't get it.
@myfilms999
@myfilms999 11 жыл бұрын
that's exactly what a con is, they needed someone to pretend to be the sheikh. They were trying to bring down politicians. Amy adams character began to (fake) fall for Bradley Cooper. And they ended up conning Cooper's character.

Jesus, were you not paying attention?? I had no problem following the plot, and I'm not going to explain it all to you, except to say the movie did explain why Bale and Adams' characters weren't together for most of the movie, You must have went to the bathroom during the scene that explained it. Watch the movie again.

Just saw it. LOVED IT! What I love about David O Russell is that he gives us great stories that are as much about the plot as they are about the characters. Usually movies fall short in one of those two categories but Russell always gives us both. An amazing collection of performances by the ensemble cast but personally I felt Bradley Cooper was the weakest link and his character was a little too all over the place. Bale and Lawrence were my favorites. So glad to see an A+ on this one. Keep up the great work and remember, don't put metal in the science oven!

I didn't think it was great. It had some really stupid pointless plot lines and I couldn't at all get invested in most of these characters with the exception of Bale, Renner and Adams.

I am torn on this movie... I feel the same about this movie the same way I do about Titanic. Everything from the acting to the cinematography to the script and even the music felt right but for some reason I didn't enjoy it. I mean technically it was all there, but for some reason it felt "off" to me and I was even bored sometimes. I don't know, maybe it's just not for me. I just personally feel that The Wolf of Wall street was just as well made and was more entertaining throughout.
@limo4935
@limo4935 10 жыл бұрын
It's almost like it tried to replicate the craziness of Silver Linings Playbook but elevated it to another level which took me out of the movie. I think it's because the elevated level made me see the actors as just that despite the fact that their performances were pretty damn good. It just sucks that the script couldn't pull off the same level of craziness as The Wolf of Wall Street did and left me at the end feeling like it could have been better. I watched it again yesterday and I have to say, I liked it even less this time. The feel of the movie makes you bored very quickly which no good film should make you feel that way. I mean how entertaining is Jennifer Lawrence shaking her head meant to be?
@limo4935
@limo4935 10 жыл бұрын
Oh I enjoy Silver Linings Playbook which I personally feel is his best film. Bradley Cooper nails it as does Robert De Niro (I was happy to see him in a great film for a change). Oh Wolf of Wall Street is controversial, scummy and dirty but it is honestly one of the best films to be released in a while and possibly one of the funniest films I have ever seen. One scene in particular stands out in the minds of every viewer of that movie and I will not spoil it for you xD In fact set me an inbox or something when your back from seeing it

Terrific movie that sometimes goes a bit overboard into comedy at the expense of realism. Cooper is a bit too off-the-rails manic to be an FBI agent, and the scenes with his boss, though hilarious, are not plausible. Still, loved the film overall. Amy Adams was so good she's now on the level of, say, Nicole Kidman.

In a way Chris, you kind of nailed how I feel about David O. Russell. I think he's an arrogant person, and for me it shows through in his movies. I really liked Silver Linings Playbook, but I thought The Fighter was pretty overrated. I haven't seen this movie yet, but just knowing the story and David O. Russell, I don't think I'm going to love it. He just comes across, both in person and through his movies, like a guy who thinks he is making the most amazing films to ever grace the screen. He does make good movies, won't deny that, but I don't know. They just aren't my style. Glad you liked it though, and I'll still give it a chance when it comes out in theaters around me. It's gotta be at least good if you gave it an A+. Good review though! Hey, in your opinion is Christian Bale better in this or Out of the Furnace?

***** First off, crack isn't my drug of choice. It's heroin. Just kidding. But I never said I knew him, nor do I think I'm really "taking it out on him" either. I've watched multiple interviews with him, and like I said he COMES OFF (not saying I know him, just relating my impression) as being arrogant. And I did say he makes good movies, they just aren't really my style. Don't feel like I attacked him at all

Can't say I agree here. After rewatches to see if there's just something I missed, I found the movie to be just a shade above mediocre because of the really good performances by Amy Adams and Christian Bale with some nice supporting work by Jeremy Renner and Robert De Niro in his lone scene. Bradley Cooper was fine, but was relatively uninteresting to me for a lot of the film with the only time he made me even smirk being any time he was doing something with Louis C.K. As for Jennifer Lawrence, I flat-out thought she was awful. Shrill beyond belief with an accent laid on so thick there was no way she could keep it consistent (and she doesn't), it just felt to me like she was trying to one-up Sharon Stone in Casino by trying to devour the scenery every chance she got and she's not experienced enough to know how to pull off going that big. The direction by David O. Russell was hyperkinetic to the point of near-incomprehensibility as he jumps around through all these different plots and subplots that in the end barely leave much of an impression and just seem like they're trying to showcase how wacky these characters are and how beautiful the women are that he keeps zooming or tracking in on. From what I know, much of the dialogue was improvised and it really shows with a lot of scenes feeling like they're going all over the damn place without much rhyme or reason as they ultimately lead to little that advances the story in any way or provides much insight into these characters. It's big, loud, flashy, and aesthetically pleasing, but it's O. Russell biting off way more than he can chew without knowing when to tone things down in his bid to make a Scorsese-esque tale of true story crime. Hell, Scorsese would show how it's done just a few weeks later with The Wolf of Wall Street.

I really don't know why this movie is so hated by people. Maybe because the scam it is trying to depict is sophisticated and a bit confusing so impatient viewers just found it boring? I am not sure. This is an exuberant, wonderful movie. Wish I could hear more people that have good things to say about it, but its their opinion. I respect that.

Just saw the film last night and I cant understand why the film is getting near perfect ratings. The acting was good but I just kept dozing off or losing interest in the film at certain points. Apart from the slapstick moments it wasn't making me keel on the floor with laughter. The plot wasn't exactly riveting either. Imho the film is probably a B minus because of the fact that the actors played their parts well and a long boring plot brings it down. If there weren't so many hollywood stars in this film I don't think this film would have got as much praise as it has garnered. In no way is this a terrible movie btw, just doesn't live up tp its insane amount of hype.

I thought it was a great movie, though some scenes felt a bit too long and dragging, but overall the performances were great and it was very funny.

Characters were not likable in any way, they all annoyed me actually, story was boring not surprising at any time, acting was fine, waaaay too long would have turned it off if i was at home. Honestly i have no positive things to say, i was very disappointed. If this wins the Oscar for best picture i'll be pissed to say the least.

The script was magnificant, the actors were top notch, loved the music. But de movie was boring... And that's because David O. Russel pays more attention to the characters than to the plot. And it worked really well with both The Fighter and Silver Linings, but here it makes the movie tedious. Yeah, like I said the script and dialogue are very very well written, but the movie overall wasn't like the spectacular music it has in it.. It was kinda boring...

I did not like the movie it was to slow for me. did anybody else feel the same way or is it just me ?

I didn't necessarily feel it was slow, but I did feel it was convoluted and failed to keep my interest for significant portions of time. I really tried to get into it too but it just didn't work for me as a whole,certain parts I liked and other times I just wasn't invested in the characters or the particular subplot that was being focused on, but even in those moments that I wasn't interested it wasn't that the movie felt slow, more so that I didn't care for any characters and felt the plot was a bit messy. Saw it with my girlfriend though and she couldn't have been any more bored/disinterested so some people definitely thought it was slow like you did

I saw American Hustle last night. I loved the film. It was one of those films for me that while I was watching it, it felt like I was watching a classic. Like I felt when I was watching Drive in 2011. Do you think this movie will have a lasting effect years from now?

You people are crazy. Yes, I had a little trouble following the first time, but was still mesmerized! After the second viewing, this is definitely in my top ten of all time. I don't see how people can even compare it to Goodfellas! Two completely different movies...and in many ways, this one is better. I'm NOT saying it's better. I can't even compare the two...just in some ways.

Heather Banks if this movie is in your top 10 of all time, you really need to watch more movies bud, because this movie is far from being an amazing masterpiece, ive read people liked it alot, to me its a terrible overrated movie. and to have this mediocre movie in one's top 10 really indicates theyve seen a small range of movies...

chris... silver linings playbook yes a+, cause it was a great drama about a certain stigma being adressed so a great story, great acting, great cast in general and a lot of great humor that fit the script. American hustle was a crave for an oscar... it wanted to be as profound, but this story didnt came from david o russel's heart, but from his crave for another win... Im sorry but this was a b-... though the acting was solid.

I saw the movie last night, I agree with you on all counts. Question: maybe it was my lack of familiarity with the events this is based on or just means this movie is worth rewatching, but at any point did you feel that the movie was a bit too jumbled in its storytelling? At times I felt like there is this fantastic movie here and if the camera and focus of the story would just hold still and help us understand a bit more of what was going on, it might be more enjoyable and we can experience the relationships between the characters more fully.

Amy Adams was so annoying in this which wore a since I usually love her. She didn't deserve the Osacr nom,it should have been Brie Larson in Short Term 12 or Rooney Mara in Side-Effects. Jennifer Lawrence was hammy. Cooper and Bale were okay but nothing special. Bale's nomination should've gone to Jude Law in Side-Effects instead.

great movie with very impressive cast made of mystique, rocket raccoon, hawkeye, lois lane and batman. i love chris bale one of the best actors right now, who is always in character and very devoted to every role he is playing. he is my favorite actor and the best batman and amy adams never looked sexier. bradley cooper has to become flash, dc should take notes and they should catch him right away. cant wait to see the movie.
