Have you ever heard the term "tone deaf"? See the problem with tone deaf is that they absolutely cannot hear that they are off of tune. There's a reason you cannot pass your music exams for an instrument past a certain grade if you are tone deaf. It's sad, but even the music conservatories try to cull these unfortunate individuals out and for good reason - they have standards and a reputation to uphold. Sadly, there's NO cure for tone deaf.

As the auditions got worse, not only did Simon's comments get nastier but Simon's faith in the show got smaller. He was honestly starting to think that American Idol was going to be a disaster, like bringing this show to America was a mistake. But his faith was renewed when they finally started meeting some good singers, one of which was Kelly Clarkson.
