In Italy we say "Il pandino non si infama" it mean that you can't talk bad about the Panda in any situation. You can say everything you want about Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati, Alfa, Lancia, and so on; but if you talk shit about Panda we can be angry. this is the level of love that we have of this car in Italy

In the Alps (i.e. France, Itay, Switzerland and Austria), these are well loved as relatively cheap cars that will get you home in Winter. Don't forget that many "roads" that go through the higher-up villages can be rather narrow, so a Panda or a Jimny will make driving more safe.

In Italy it is used by the police but also by the forestry and civil protection to reach places that are difficult to reach following violent atmospheric events and harmful geological activities. I remember that to reach the snowy peaks, the forestry left the Defender in the valley and went up in panda...the lightness combined with the narrow tires made it ideal for climbing on icy surfaces.

The 80s/90s FIAT Panda is the jewel in the crown of Italy, every italian got one or knows someone who owned one, it was supposed to move the masses even in the worst mountain roads of north Italy. When you say it isn't capable as much as a Land Rover you are kinda wrong, the pands is MUCH more agile and nimble thanks to its very light weight (under 900kg), with the thin tires it can easely go through deep snow and sometimes even some mud. I used to own one from the late 80s before it rusted out and I scrapped it... unluckly it has its own weaknesses, FIAT used to have poor build quality in terms of bodywork, interior and electrics: FIAT aimed to make a reliable 4x4 system and an idestructible engine and give up on metals and plastics, that would usually get ruined over the time. Nevertheless the FIAT Panda remains an hero for Italy that is still produced to these days altough it got a little worse over the generations. Keep on showing people those hidden jems of automotive history!

The old one is THE REAL Panda 4x4. It's virtually indestructible. I live at the feet of the Alps and many people here are using it for 30+ years going about everywhere. It can take a lot of punishment and take you where no land rover can, in the narrow trails of Italian mountains. DAS PANDA. 😁

I have a 1997 Panda 4x4, I live at 700 meters above sea level and there is often snow in winter. You have no idea how many modern SUVs I've eaten up when conditions got tough. After 30 years the machines in Italy become historic. This means that you pay very little for insurance (100 euros a year), an engine in good condition can be found for 600 euros. It's the best "second" car you can have. It's not beautiful, but if you look at the practical aspect it is unstoppable and economical. A true monster without comparison.

FIAT sold hundred of thousand of the first series to Civil Services and even the military as it was the perfect scout car to have in the small and tight mountain roads during winter. you wouldn't expect it to carry large equipments or a lot of fully equipment, but it were able to get anywhere in any weather. It was light, it was rigged, it was easy to maintain, had flat windows everywhere, easy to replace, simple by capable 4X4 with fully lockable differentials, a square body with extremely good visibility all around, low centre of weight that made it almost impossible to tip over. The 4x4 is widely used in remote areas and even used by forest agencies. It's also a commercial success, one of the most sold car in Italy. Lots of young people had a Panda as a first car and it is fondly loved because of that. Because of its small size lots of people refers to it as the "Pandina".

Ahhhh I miss my Fiat panda mk2 4x4. I had one back in France in the Jura region. The car never ever let me down. Then I moved to Luxembourg and bought a “Panda 100hp”. Check videos of that car. Absolutely hilarious, and very nippy.

In Italy we call it "Pandino" (little Panda). When I worked in the National Health System , there was a colleague of mine, a midwife, who usually went to assist women in the most isolated places. Panda 4x4, manual gearbox, shoes with 110 mm heels. (4 inches) ... snow, mud, bad roads: she never had any problems, she never got stuck on the road. The panda is a myth!! (and also the midwife) :-)

It's light and it's got great ground clearance. Thin tires and a Steyr-Puch 4x4 system makes it one of the best off-roaders in existence. In Italy, on the Alps many people tend to buy SUVs and newer cars, but as soon as snow starts falling, all the SUVs disappear and these start popping up everywhere!

my mum's had a 1996 one, 900cc, and now she has a 2012 one, 1200cc LPG. the 900cc one was also my first car when I was 18, a friend of my dad's had it laying around and he gave it to me for free. I drove it everywhere, short and long distance, I went camping in it, I got it stuck in the sand because I wanted to test its rallying abilities on the beach (yep..) and we sold it to a friend of mine years later who managed to wrap it around a tree or something. the panda here in Italy is as important as the old 500, and the 4x4 one is just a legendary machine.

I've heard it said that the earlier ones are better off road, very simple. Ordinary Panda is front wheel drive, with a dead tube axle, and cart springs. Steyr worked their magic, and substituted a live rear axle, still with leaf springs. The latest ones rely on electronics, instead of mechanical equipment; and some look the part, but are only front drive. Usually they end up submitting to the old enemy... corrosion.

Here in Spain SEAT built this car under FIAT license and to this day there are entire comunities of 4x4 Pandas. Groups of more than 100 or 200 people reunite between Portugal and Spain and organize routes. Most middle age people here in Spain learned to drive in a Panda, although in a fwd one.

I've driven dozens of different 4x4's ( never a panda though) but the best I ever drove was a Land Rover wolf V8 with only 70 km on its clocks. It was lhd and had just came straight from the army in Germany and was awaiting resupply to another unit, we landed up using it on exercise in Longmoor for fibua training. But my favourite of them all is the 101 FC GS, or gun tractor. True story, whilst doing fibua training, the off road course was being used by pinzgaurs being trialled by the mod. They won favour because of their portal axles.

Cool little cars. Wheeler Dealers did one of these many years ago. They had to fix the 4x4 selector linkage. They also painted it and fitted some off road tyres. It would be worth watching if you want to see more of how they work.

I learned how to drive with a panda Trekking 4x4 from mid 90's (like the ones in the snow) and still part of the family (i am 42 now). i was hoping you will check that little car. Even now people are still looking for the older models of the car, especially if they live in some rural area. For the size, weight and power... gives you much more than you can imagine... and fixing it it's very simple. Once you own one... you can only fall in love with it... even if has basically no optional... very minimal. As prices for a second hand one... the older 4x4 models can sell up to 5000€. Happy you liked it.

Thanks ;) The 4x4 system of the first (boxy) generation was developed by Steyr Daimler Puch (who made the G-"wagen", as you call it) and it was the most capable of them all, having a live rear axle and a completely manual 4x4 system. Although the rounder, younger versions are far more agreeable on the road, they "only" have a viscous drive, but still are quite capable.

The new models are sold, fully stuffed with extras and addons, for less than 25k Euro. As a brand new car. Over here, in Europe, you'll get a classic 1st series Panda 4x4 for 3k (needs fixing) all the way up to 22k (one prior owner, less than 5k km on the odometer).

I'm italian and a second series Panda 4x4 Multijet (1.3 Liter Turbo diesel engine) is my only car, it runs on nothing (around 50 mpg), drives on road like a city car and plows on snow and mud no problem. Mine being stock is not as high from ground as the blue or gray ones seen in this video so is not as capable in the uphills but i can go trekking or skiing in whatever condition and i know for sure my Panda will make it. A little bit of information about these cars: excluding the most basic trim for the first and second series, all 4x4 pandas are equipped from factory with an under-engine bashplate, as a 4x4 system, the first series is manually controlled through a lever, the second series is automatically controlled by a viscous transfer case that engages the back wheels when the front ones loose grip and the later models of the second series and all the third series ones, opted for an electronic-controlled one (due to performance issues and slow response times of the viscous one), they are almost all manual (except for a few models which were offered in automatic, that didn't sold well) and the first series had 1.0 L and later 1.2 L 4 cylinder petrol engines, second series had 1.2L NA 4 cyl petrol and 1.3L Turbo 4 cyl. Diesel and the third series had the same 1.3L diesel and a 1.0L Turbo petrol 2 cyl engine
