I love that there is so much love still out there for AMC and that you in particular are leading the charge to both preserve the history but to also organize it into this coming documentary. One regret of my life is loving this underdog but never having any contact with an actual car. I never owned one. Nobody I knew ever owned one. I had just one ten minute ride in a Concord and that's been it. I wanted an Eagle SX4 when I was twelve with no idea how impractical that was. And then a four door sedan Eagle and should have bought a used AMC in the late 80s or early 90s but didn't have the wherewithal to do so. So big cheers to you and your partners for celebrating AMC for those of us brave enough to admire this ultimate underdog.

@@AutoMoments I am glad there are many AMCs still out there and I would buy one if I knew how to care for one but I don't. So I am glad there are so many others that can keep these cars alive. I look forward to the documentary. The preview is an amazing tease. Wishing you all well as you hit the home stretch.

I'm glad you'll be uploading it on youtube too so even I can watch it in the UK. I find AMC fascinating as it seems to mirror what how Rootes group declined. I also believe there was an importer in the UK back in the day doing Right Hand Drive conversions on Pacers & such. They didn't do well but it's still an interesting part of history

@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 24 күн бұрын
It depends how you categorize "independent" car companies. I generally see Excalibur as a "specialty" or "boutique" automaker, as it wasn't a mainstream high-volume company. Still, Excalibur is a fascinating part of automotive history!

One of our retiree drivers worked at the AMC assembly line making the Concord and Eagles right before the buyout. He said by the end they were slapped together with all the love of a lunch lady bologna sandwich. The stamping dies were so worn out for the wagons they had to make a new piece of trim to hide a 3/8in gap around the rear windows.
@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 24 күн бұрын
Yikes! Yeah, that body shape had been in production for a looong time by then, so it's no surprise the dies were worn out.

Will these documentaries include anything about the history between AMC and VAM and the unique Mexican-market AMC vehicles like the Lerma?
@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 24 күн бұрын
Sadly, we had to leave out most of AMCs foreign-market ventures, and we just didn't have enough time to squeeze all that into the documentary with everything else. But VAM is certainly a cool story, and perhaps we can cover that in a future video!

AMC was a mix mosh of parts Ford Autolite Carburetors and ignition system. GM Saginaw power steering and Delco power steering pumps. After 1972 727 torque flight transmission from Chrysler. Before 1972 Borg Warner transmission.
@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 24 күн бұрын
Yes, it's true that AMC did buy a lot of parts, but they also built a lot of stuff in house, too. It was a mix. What's funny is, AMC and GM could both buy a part from a the same supplier, but mechanics would say, "Oh that's a GM part" because it went into 3 million Impalas but only 600,000 Hornets. Even though, no, it's actually a 3rd party part they both used.

Tesla is an independent American automaker
@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 24 күн бұрын
Yes, you're right! But originally, the name "Independent" was actually an unofficial term from the automotive press that helped differentiate GM, Ford, and Chrysler from the smaller American manufacturers like Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, Nash, etc. Technically, AMC wasn't an "independent" because it was made from the merger of two smaller companies, but the press still referred to it as such. What complicates things is, even smaller car companies like Excalibur and Avanti generally we considered "specialty" or "boutique" automakers, not independents. Of course now with Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid, we have a new crop of independent American automakers. But AMC was the last of the old "independents" from when the term was originally coined, and that's where our title comes from.
