Haw 23 Brereton one of the most brilliant players of the 80s. Devastating match winner on his day. Also a fashion plate, constant shit stirrer, and insanely courageous competitor. The story of the legendary 89 Grand Final..... Brereton had 2 ribs broken in first 30 secs, played out entire match and kicked goals. Respek the Derm.
@colincolenso
@colincolenso Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Mark Yeates (sp?) charged Brereton at the start of the game. He got broken ribs, as did Dipper (Dipierdomenico) that day, dipper with a collapsed lung. I've had broken ribs twice playing footy, one time my lung collapsed after the game. Damned if I'd be staying on the field. Not without a lot of pain killers or a death wish. They hurt bad, and for weeks. Geelong picked the wrong strategy that day. Put Hawthorn in a war mode and they went 6 goals up in the first quarter. Cats came back to lose by a goal in the end. Cats were clear favourites and changed strategy for the final. 1989 - arguably the best GF in history.

Number 1, Leigh Mathews is considered one of the greatest players of the game, he went on to becoming a coach, getting Collingwood a grand final win in the 90’s, and then moved on to coaching Brisbane Lions to the record 3 in a row 2001, 2002, 2003. He is currently the chairman of the board for the Brisbane Lions, and occasionally will commentate games.

The no.8 guy, Mark (Jacko) Jackson ended up as the MAIN star in a Holywood TV Series "The Highwayman" and had a no.1 Australian Music Single "I'm an Individual". In latter years has toured the country doing comedy / tale performances. He used to live around the corner from me when I was in my teens. He drew crowds with his crazy behavior, and actually has one of the best goals/per game stats in VFL history. Over 4 as I recall. Note: He went at anyone, not a bully as you psychoanalyzed him, just indefatigably aggressive and always a showman.

Just an after thought that may interest you, "Mark Jackson" went to Hollywood USA and was a star (star in Australia in this case is translated into idiot), in the TV series "the Highway Man". I never met an Australian who watched it or liked it. To most of us it was total garbage. He eventually returned to Australia and was a very very successful gold miner. He was so good at that gig, he made millions. Credit to him for that dam good hands on manual labour talent & drive he had. Your a loud mouth Yank, but your respect shines through brightly, so respect right back at you. Your becoming an Aussie, welcome aboard. Love your work Bro.

Hi love the passion you’re showing for our great game. Really looking forward to watching how you react to this upcoming AFL season. I’ve got a bit of a Mark crybaby Jackson story for you. When I was 15 years old, I was trying out for Swan districts football club in the Western Australian Football Leauge in which played in against South Fremantle, who’s full forward was Mark cry baby Jackson. Before the game. The coach came up to me and said I know you want to try to make it to the next level so I’ve got a job for you. He took me to the kitchen and picked up a big bucket of food slops. He told me to go behind the goals and every time I thought Jacko might run towards the play to throw some food at him and call him a fat pig, Abuse and torment him as much as possible before the umpires caught on. First play. I threw chicken bone and hit right on the back of the his head. “ Hey Jacko you f&$king fat pig I called out. He came flying up to the fence and jumped it, but it was a home game and the crowd, helped me out by slowing him down. I kept it up the whole game, and he was super pissed. He was a pretty reactionary player and often become aggressive and stupid. Jacko was a good player though, with and good mark and always hard at the ball. He could turn a game at times with dominant play. The boys romped it home for the win and Jacko hardly had a touch because he was too busy at the fence.😂 On the way out of the ground. I saw the coach in the car and he leaned out and yelled good job son see you at training. It was a magic day. 🎉

The trash on the field is what supporters used to do , after a goal was kicked they would throw paper into the air and throw streamers . This is old school footy , hardly see it any more , maybe a bit of push n shove . Big suspensions now for players who thro punches or elbows. The head is sacrosanct and players have a duty of care not to knock opposition players senseless . Spot on with name pronunciations . The Hawthorn player is all time great full back Kelvin Moore , apparently he said to Mark Jackson (Jacko ) “ that you will never be a footballers a/hole as long as your bum points to the ground , so he did a hand stand ( Jacko was a nutter ) great reaction mate , but our game isn’t like this anymore, so for all you who will follow the AFL this year , don’t expect too much biffo 😊

What the umpire is doing is putting the player on report. He’s writing him up so the player has to report to the AFL tribunal to explain their actions on the field. From there, the tribunal determines if any punishment needs to be given (fines, suspensions, etc.). They don’t immediately eject people from the game or give them red cards, putting them out of the game. They play the game, and deal with the punishments afterward.

You are correct that these incidents are from a few decades ago. Players cannot get away with that kind of stuff these days and thuggery is no longer considered just part of the game. Too many umpires and video angles to escape being reported and a visit to the tribunal. There is no send off rule. A reported player will play out the game. In those days the umpire would tell the player he was being reported and write the player's number in the notebook. Even 'innocent' collisions resulting in head knocks see a player taken immediately from the field and undergoing concussion tests. If concussed they take no further part in the game, nor the for the following 12 days. I am writing on Grand Final night 2023. Earlier in the finals Braydon Maynard of Collingwood knocked out a Melbourne player in a collision. He was looking at a 3 week suspension, but a marathon Tribunal session saw him cleared him of wrongdoing. He was thus able to pick up his Premiership medal this afternoon. GO PIES!!!

Ditterich burst out of the coaches box, Melbourne were getting spanked, and gave me a forearm jolt to the chest cos I was in his way. In the 30’s and 40’s Carlton had a player called Bob Chitty. He was the only player to scare Richmond enforcer Jack “Captain Blood” Dyer. Mark Jackson appeared on American TV in Energizer ads. He was in the American TV show The Highwayman.

Robert Muir is an aboriginal man. Most of his fights happened because of disgusting racist taunts and extreme verbal abuse Clubs discovered he had a tendency to 'blow up' so they goaded him. At the time, neither the club, the VFL as it was then, admin, did anything to help him. It was a case of suck it up and play ball. They just pushed this man too far. Why he didn't just go and change jobs, He was the wrong colour, the wrong type of person, and he was under contract In the 70's, nobody could afford to break a contract

Any chance you could do a video about skills in the AFL being used in the NBA. For example many of Josh Giddey’s rebounds are like marking in a pack. Lee Mathews was otherwise known as lethal Lee. he was tuff but he could play he was also known as a legendary player. in the old days it could be a free for all. If you see someone writing a player's name that meant he was being reported and face the tribunal. the rules before the 2000 were a lot more open with the rough play. the guy in the colored uniform is what is called a runner, they relay anything from the coach or go check any player that is injured or run water out to a player (only approach player away from play unless player is K.O. or bleeding). Some of the best players could be the most lethal and never thought twice about bulldozing threw other players. 18 players each team on field and 4 on the bench so if an all-in then 36 players bluing. The old days were full contact not like today.

He got cut up by Breretons studs on his boots as he would put his foot out when marking to stop other players coming near him lol. The Guys in yellow on the field i imagine would of been the trainers they go out give players water, tell them instructions from the bench or coach ect The umpire would of been writing down what he did his name and number as part of the reporting process back then

Crazy No25 was actually quite smart and best friends with many bikie bosses and underworld figures. He wasn't that good a fullforward so deliberately harrassed his direct opponent, the full back, hoping for a reaction that would give him a free kick at goal . He often threw punches knowing the umpires always ignore the instigator and book the victim for responding. Wacko Jacko started many all in brawls and should have been rubbed out and barred for life in his first season.

Enforcer No7 , Dermott Brereton is actually a sort of nice guy. Not a "Nice Guy" but a decent sort of bloke. Tough as nails though. He played the entire game of the 1989 Grand Final with broken ribs and a punctured lung, from an incident that happened in the opening seconds of the game. Robert Dipierdomenico ( "Dipper" ) also nearly died in that game when he ruptured a Kidney in an incident with Gary Ablett (Snr.) Anyway , most people love Dermott Brereton (" Dermy" ) and he appears as a commentator on the T.V. quite often. Tony Lockett is the all time highest goalkicking record holder. After he got the record they started writing songs about him. You know you've made it in the AFL when you get your own theme song. Enforcer No1 here , "Lethal" Leigh Matthews started coaching after his playing days. Amongst others he coached the mighty mighty Lions from 1999-2008. In that time he took us from "cellar dwellers" to Grand Finalists. Under Matthews we played in 4 "Grannies" (2001-2004) and won the first 3. There are a series of videos on the "tube of you" called the "Three Peat Story" if you are interested.

number 25 MARK "JACKO" JACKSON was BELOVED BY ALL SUPPORTERS he was such a character and even though he was tough and in your face he was really a very likable guy even the opposition players LOVED "JACKO" and his antics, you have to have grown up watching "JACKO" in action as you never knew what you were going to get when he wasn't being aggressive he acted the clown for the fans while the ball was at the other end you don't get to see what he used to do to entertain the crowd during the game and his opposition players, WE ALL LOVED "JACKO" even the players on all sides he was so much fun, he could get angry but back then the hits came thick and fast from all directions even when the ball was 100 meters away so you have to understand the game and the spirit behind it.

In AFL traditionally play never stops. No matter what, fight breaks out doesn't matter, you're hurt, doesn't matter, you sucker punched someone, so what. You can not be ejected from the game, even if injured to be replaced on the field you must go through the transfer window. If play comes back to a defenseless injured player they will now stop the game. They will also temporarily pause it for blood rule subs, and for replays (usually less than 2mins). Otherwise as it has always been the game is full on all the time. To deal with serious rule infractions players are reported. The umpire tells the player they are reported, writes the players name down and a brief description, time, what for, to whom. The player is then called before the tribunal for whom the report is made and punishment if necessary is decided. The one umpire writing for a bit was probably reporting multiple people and likely multiple infractions for that player as abuse of the umpire is reportable and as was stressed last year in the AFL, to exteeme, desent to an Umpire is a penalty.

At 11:14 the Essendon player was called Billy Duckworth he just keep laughing at him. I am Essendon supporter. A two older brother's, Niece and my mum use too but I lost my mum the year before covid that go for Essendon,. Older Brother, Niece, Nephew and Sister-in-law go for Collingwood. Older Brother. Sister-in-law and Nephew go for Richmond. Nephew go for Carlton. Nephew that goes for Hawthorn.

Robert Muir seriously unhinged individual the player only player and there were a lot of dirty players ive seen but I'm surprised or amazed he wasn't banned for life i know of 2 others one from each Collingwood and Essendon for giving umpires a whack that ive seen they may be others pre 1970's he was a talented skillfull player when he wasnt loosing his cool, one dangerous unpredictable character.

It annoys me when 2 guys have a beef others have to join in. I played rugby Union and for most of the time if 2 men were unusually fighting they were allowed to carry on together.

I’m a Melbourne supporter but I think you need to follow Geelong as ny jets punter Ben graham was champion of that club before he went over to US to play NFL

I’m guessing you’ll pick Collingwood. Just be aware that you will alienate 75% of Aussie footy followers.

None of those players would make it through a season nowadays, they would also probably cop civil actions through the law courts, they have stamped it out and it needed to be.

I knew two of them, a centre umpire and a goal umpire. Both had to do the same physical training, running, etc, and both officiated in Grand Finals.

As long as you don’t support Collingwood you’re all good. I’d go Essendon outta the four, if not Brisbane. Hawthorn are gonna come last this year I reckon so if you can put up with being shit for a few years

A lot of the dirty hits were paybacks from a previous game the teams had played that year or they were bitter rivals from 100 years back to present.
