I was so happy when you mentioned the whole sacrificing your first born thing. I practically cheered! I remember making that joke weeks ago on stream. I was so to see that brought back. Thanks Kylie, that made my day! I loved your whole documentary approach to horror marketing here. It's a thing that even video essayists never mention it's so easy to miss. And marketing does run our lives yet most people know so little about it. Also the whole Disneyfication of Blumhouse makes me nervous. Every time two companies become one it's one less company artists can pitch ideas to. I get that people are excited but a centralized place for horror will have unforseen drawbacks. Not to be a downer, but let's look at the big picture as well. I was very happy you mentioned Akela Cooper. It's so easy to forget the writers of well everthing which I hope changes. Writers need recognition! And making a horror movie tamer for the theatrical run and putting out a physical unrated version later was super common in the '90's. That's what happened to Return of the Living Dead 3 and countless others! The '90's were the rise of the "director's cut!" as marketing strategy! So Jason Blum and James Wan saying otherwise isn't necessarily true. I respect them but still haha This was a great send off for your Hawaiian vacation Kylie! Have fun!

It's interesting to me that M3GAN got such positive feedback from general audiences and critics. I could not for the life of me understand why this movie was getting such good reviews. It reminded me of the awful Child's Play remake from 3 years ago, similar premise, similar "self aware" tongue-in-cheek sort of vibe. I didn't care for that either and found M3GAN to be just as bland.

Here's my review of Megan... It was fantastic ...I love when a movie is clever enough to stimulate everyone matter their opinion. M3gan is a 9/10 movie for me. It's odd people get surprised at the dancing in the trailer when she was shown dancing with Katie earlier in the trailer.

I'd be lying if I said that this one stirred excitement for me. Even with the trailer, it felt like we had seen AI gone bad before. I will wait until streaming to see it just to see it, but I watched your whole review, spoilers, and all, and that should tell you where my level of care was for this one. I will say that I whole heartedly agree with them needing to do creative campaigns again. When Nightmare on Elm St came out (3 or 4) there was an 800 number you could call for him to say something to you. I was always too scared to call, haha. There used to be websites for movies that really hyped you up. They'd create games for them that you could play. They were dumb little games, but they hyped you up. I miss that. I do remember about the time we were getting the IT remake there were clowns showing up all over. Not sure if that was related or not, but the timing was perfect. I'm gonna pretend it was related because otherwise, that's terrifying.

But maybe they realized that non horror fans would be the ones raving about the movie, considering it’s a very toned down horror film. Always enjoy watching these in depth review videos. M3GAN was surprisingly good for me because I expected just a bad but fun movie but it was actually a good, campy, unsettling at times film that dealt with serious subjects like loss, trauma, and unhealthy attachments. I agree that M3GAN is like 75% similar to Child’s Play (2019) but I really enjoy both of them as their own AI killer doll horror. I prefer Child’s Play (2019) for its gore, score, atmosphere, and Mark Hamill’s performance while I prefer M3GAN’s campy humor, doll design, themes, and performances. For me both films are a 4/5 and makes them a fun double feature. The writer, Akela Cooper says the gorier unrated cut might be coming. As for a sequel we know that is coming to quote Randy from Scream 2: “The body count is always bigger. The death scenes are always much more elaborate, with more blood and gore. Carnage candy!”

The intro lol legendary I think they’ve been really smart with the marketing and distribution. Between the PG-13 move, the Chucky beef, and Jason Blum rockin drag they really crushed it. The M3gan squad is insane! Such commitment. They got that one dance down lol. Would love to see a Chucky/M3gan crossover movie that’s gay as heck, since it aligns with the fan bases i feel like it could totally work! I totally agree, marketing stunts are much more effective than trailers. And they’re spoiler-free! I hope the merger is good, I’d love more original horror and fresh feeling IPs, but maybe that’s just the pitch. Actually considering M3gan, it seems like less of a risk and more of a safe bet- maybe 1 of 4 will be great originals or something? We’ll see. Awesome to hear Allison Williams was able to step into the producer role as well. And the research! Amazing. Great casting, the aspect of trust is so relevant. Moon does that but with the AI character. The FX were solid! She was uncanny. Great movement too, it was hard to tell the difference between the actors and puppets. Acting/drama was almost too good for this movie. Ex Machina is like the A24/prestige AI, Child’s Play (2019) is the slasher version, Megan should’ve been goofier or something to stand out! But I guess like you said it’s a teen movie vibe. Tone-wise it was kind of too tame and realistic- kinda silly but not goofy, a little scary but not terrifying. I agree, too predicable. Not everything needs to be super subversive but at least a little switch up. Paper cutter was a great idea, but they gotta go farther than that! Lmaooo Smart House reboot let’s go. I feel like it’ll be hard not to cash in on a sequel, if they up the gore and humor, it’d be rad! Glad new original horror is cleaning up in the box office. Gives me hope for the future!

I get the idea they want hype in the marketing to get ppl to know about it, but it's so weird to me how they seemed to push for that much younger audience. The reason is that the film's best parts are not doll-shenanigans but the effective early meditations on loss and parenting, which are quite striking. The big scene, which is done so well, is what I'll call "The Demo", the terrible spectacle of Gemma making the grieving kid do it, despite what's been happening, then Cady's heartbreaking admission, then M3gan's response, and the reactions of the demo's audience going from stoked, to sad and then elation as the whole thing dissolves into dollar signs for them. It's one of the best scene in any film I've seen in the past 12 months. It was almost a pity the third act brought things down into regular horror tropes.

I saw my first rated R horror movie at the age of 9 it was the OG My bloody Valentine and it traumatized me. I couldn't look away from the screen. It was in the middle of the night too lol. My intro to horror was with R films then later in life I exposed myself to PG13 horror lol.

There was also the 1999 disney channel classic smart house! It was honestly pretty good at predicting modern technology like Alexa/amazon echo. Not a great movie nor actually horror but it's super nostalgic for 90s kids and was real creepy as a kid.

In regards to marketing I vaguely remember V posters for the TV miniseries popping up all around Manchester UK in 1983, I was about 9 years old. I'm guessing the posters were in every large city? They were basically just black posters with a red V on them, with the words, "They're Here" or something written small on top. I was like what, who's here, what's going on, why are these posters everywhere? lol. Think it had to be explained to me it was a TV show. First instance of that kind of marketing maybe? The posters generated interest anyways as the show was a big hit.

I also thought the movie was trully generic, but as I was entertained anyway, I'm not complaining. I won't be revisiting it anytime soon, but it's ok. I thought M3gan could indeed be a great introduction to horror, especially to a younger audience. Also, Cinema Therapy posted a great video on the subject a few weeks ago, I didn't expect grieving treated the way it was. To me, that was the unexpected highlight to an overall just ok movie, and I loved it.

If you wanna watch a crazy A.I. movie, maybe check out Ghost in the Machine a 1994 horror film about a serial killer whose consciousness get turned into A.I. and he continues his spree. Its a good, cheesy, relaxing horror film. Also includes an attempted pool death scene.

I missed all the marketing and hype for this, probably because I don't really watch tv or spend a lot of time on social media. I did see one trailer for this movie, but I can't even remember when or where, and I was not interested in the slightest. Kinda over the whole killer/creepy doll subgenre at this point. To hear that it's a bit tame, and maybe intended more for a casual horror fan or teen audience I'm glad I skipped this one.

I went to the movies and saw M3GAN with my brother and father. We freaking LOVED it. I'm definitely on board for a crossover between Chucky and M3gan. I would watch that in a heartbeat. I would also describe this film as "LOOK OUT, CHUCKY! YOU'VE GOT SOME SERIOUS KILLER DOLL COMPETITION!" The acting and story were both fantastic. Without a doubt, M3GAN is my favorite horror movie villain, which makes Chucky my second favorite of the top 5. I was truly surprised that this was a PG-13-rated movie instead of an R-rating, but it's not too surprising. I can't wait to add this film to my collection when it comes out on 4K Blu-ray.

I found most of the characters at the beginning, minus the parents, to be unbearable and hard to get behind. Minus Cady, that critic went away as the film progressed. Gemma especially, and of course Megan, grew on me as the movie went along. I Aldo found the movie to be ok and a middle of the road type of film. I don’t see myself watching it again, which would make it tough for me to get behind a sequel. If Megan does get a sequel, I would hope that it is a good film and can perform well at the box office.

I definitely thought the thrills were lacking and could've used more brutal sequences to really nail the blatant horror aspect we've come to expect, but I thought the movie worked more in its character driven approach to the story. I definitely didn't expect it to go that way and I appreciated it, it's a nice trade off. I felt the desire to root for M3gan in many instances thanks to her depiction and relationship with the daughter, and the mother wasn't a clean cut protagonist which I enjoyed. I think they'll amp up the camp and brutality in the inevitable sequel, it's just what sequels do. I just hope they don't sacrifice the already solid writing they got in this one in the process

I was disappointed in it. You can tell most of the places where they edited it down from an R to a PG-13 movie. The death scenes seem to abruptly cut to black too often. It spent too much time on drama and not enough on the gore for me. Plus, M3GAN felt too much like a secondary character. The ending was predictable and uninspiring. As soon as they introduced a certain character I knew they would play a big part in the finale. I hope the Unrated blu-ray version fills in all that they left out of the Theatrical version.

I just got back from seeing "M3gan". I probably liked it more than I would have, had I seen the " Child's Play" remake. "M3gan" was pretty entertaining, the doll design was stellar, and the actresses playing the aunt and niece were great. The movie did leave me wanting more, though; more kills, more suspense, more surprises. More of everything, basically. Some of the side characters were kind of lackluster, including the neighbor, as well as the actors who played Gemma's boss and his butt-kissing assistant. I'm hoping an under-wraps R-rated cut of the movie emerges, but as far as the version that we got goes, it's all a bit of a letdown.

Finally saw Megan tonight and I thought it was fun entertaining movie. Nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary, but they did a really great job on Megan herself to get her look so creepy and scary; especially towards the end. Ashley Williams and the little kids acting was phenomenal. Although i wanted to throw my soda towards the screen when I saw the slap scene that wanted to get the inner parent in me and just go off. Overall fun movie. And I loved that you mentioned Smart House as potential setup for a Megan sequel.

I didn't know that James Wan directed M3gan, that's pretty bad-ass. I'd still like to see this movie at some point because the concept at least is really interesting. We've seen evil artificial intelligence loads of times before (Skynet from Terminator, Ultron from Marvel, HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc), but a straight up horror movie where the killer is an AI sounds brilliant, especially in this day and age. And Allison Williams being in it is just a bonus. I agree that the marketing for M3gan was great, I honestly think that more upcoming horror movies should do something similar. Just makes me want to see a blood soaked Pooh and Piglet running around to advertise Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, or have Satanic imagery play on a jumbotron to advertise the upcoming Omen! Brilliant marketing, and you'll terrify kids and Christians. It's a win-win!

I don’t know if you watched anime but I know this is a horror movie but I already watched Chi Chobits I would rather them have a live action because I really enjoyed chobits I really love the anime and the comics and I would be so happy if they made alive I have already seen this before with chobits and I really love chucky the original so I think Megan is ok it’s not great I’m not crazy about the music if they had Taylor swift when she dancing but they didn’t I love you and hopefully the l sequel is better
