Bret Easton Ellis' incredibly graphic novel and Mary Harron's just as bonkers adaptation of American Psycho are just as relevant now as when they were made. Willem Dafoe said they shot that scene of him interviewing Bateman 3 distinctively different ways. One where he's absolutely sure that he's talking to the killer, one where he doesn't have the slightest clue that he's talking to the killer, and one where he's on the fence about it. And they used pieces from every version in the final product. It's fun trying to spot which remarks come from which version.

Although originally polarizing to audiences and critics alike, it developed a much deserved cult following when released on digital video disc, or DVD. There it found a second life and really came into its own commercially, and artistically.

Known fact:In the book, Patrick endlessly lists and describes his suits, stereo equipment, shampoo & everything else ad nauseum. This often (myself included) caused many readers to skip entire sections out of sheer boredom. This continues until Patrick can’t hold back anymore and starts killing. The murders are shocking, over the top & graphic. But soon enough, these are described as nauseum as well, WAY too over-detailed. I couldn’t figure out until later that this was deliberate; Patrick’s mundane image-based lifestyle was being juxtaposed with his lust for extreme violence. The point was to Patrick, choosing a Richard James or Hugo Boss suit to hang out at the Yale Club was no different than having a three-way with a model or eating a human brain with expensive mustard. He felt nothing. Along with the fact that he’s a wealthy materialistic investment banker on Wall Street (basically making him untouchable to the law) made him the perfect bad guy, a “Psycho”. His lifestyle & status are also his prison. He needs, deep down inside, to be caught & known, but knows he never will. Hence the final line in the book “THIS IS NOT AN EXIT”. Pat meeting Tom Cruise was pretty damn funny though. Should have been in the movie. EDIT: forgot about this. Christian Bale based his portrayal of Patrick on this. well i've watched the movie and have been reading the book, so far what i have gathered is that murder is an escape for bateman. he surrounds himself with people as equally distasteful as him, giving the readers head to toe descriptions, although it is exhausting i do read all of those scenes because he looks at the brands as money and he judges their income based on it. we see a lot more homophobia, sexist, and racial material throughout the book to highlight the the lifestyle of a white rich male in his 20's. in all reality bateman is actually a heavily boring person. No one can remember him and mistake him for others, he's an outcast, i think thats what is so interesting about the novel. hes an outsider. if we were reading in price's pov or Courtney's pov the lack of attention bateman gets wouldnt be as bad with those two. but overall i think both the book and the movie could stand without the other, both classics, both masterpieces.

Pauly It gets more horrifying when you realize it's transgressive literature and not high-concept symbolism at all. Pat is based on Ellis. At first he couldn't even admit that because it was too horrifying a realization. He said it was easier to displace those issues in himself onto his father and the business world but really Wall-street is just window-dressing here. That's kinda why Pat refers to it as a confession at the end.

You forgot to talk about Price. I the movie he's just another one of Patrick's friends, but in the book he disappears really early on (after the club scene) and he doesn't come back until almost the very end. That's because in the book Price symbolizes Patrick's sanity, and he only starts losing it when Price isn't there/ is almost completely back to normal when Price reappears.

@MrDX1118 Actually there is a theory that jared leto is actually the Rothschild guy that was mentioned in patrick and "allens" conversations and that the real paul allen is the guy in the back of the restaurant that Patrick says is paul Allen but we're lead to believe that's a lie, but in truth that guy is in fact the real paul allen. Now Rothschild (leto) actually passes himself off as paul allen while the real one is in london. So Patrick ends up killing Rothschild and it just so happens that the cover is that he went to London just like the real paul allen, which is why the lawyer says paul allen is alive, because he saw the actual Paul allen in london.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

I would disagree with your assessment that the movie has a serial killer in the right place at the right time, whereas the book’s killer was a product of the City and culture. Because the book is longer it can make more time to develop the influence of the city on Bateman. But this is still the same case in the film. Even though it is not as long, the book demonstrates how the culture of NY influences Bateman. His nightly bloodlust flows into his days bc of the hollow characters around him, the inability to get caught, and the lack of morals and subliminal pursuit of wealth and excess.

The author specifically said, without being coy, that he didn't know if Bateman killed anyone or if it was all in his head. He's definitely sociopathic and at best has very dangerous fantasies and is perhaps schizophrenic of some kind, but he's also not the only sociopath in his family. One of the scenes left out of the film is his meeting with his younger brother, Sean, who James Van Der Beek played in Rules of Attraction. They're both sociopaths and there's a lot of 'nurture' involved in their personality disorders based on where they grew up and the culture there. And then Patrick may just have a bit more 'nature' in the mix making him even worse...though perhaps never having killed anyone and just bat shit crazy but more or less high enough functioning to maintain the illusion of a normalcy with those around him. He's definitely one of the least reliable narrators you could ever hope to find.

I liked that little bit in the movie. I think it was a good way to show the violence from the book, without playing them out, which I think would have been a bit too much for the MPAA. All in all, one of my favorite books, and for once, a movie adaptation that didn't murder the source material (yeah yeah no pun intended)

IKMNification I feel that movie is a much better story than the book. Maybe the original message is dulled without the grotesque details but what the movie is trying to do is much more effective than whatever the author was trying to do. Not only that but the book was INCREDIBLY BORING. Whether that was intentional by the author or not, it is honestly just tedious to get through the whole thing, where the movie is much more enthralling as a dark comedy.

so I’ve read the book. And I have to say it is my all time favourite book. The reason for that is that it encompasses the psyche of a psychopath so well. He is so incredibly demented and dark and I find myself frequently captivated by the authors atmospheric sculpturing and the train of thought from this fictional character is so real. In my opinion this will always be Christian bales best performance as an actor as he emulates the character so well. It is a very profound and eerie book discussing themes of american consumerism and obsessions with violence. Patrick Bateman IS American society. It is something rare and special to witness.

In my opinion, the book makes nearly every character a worse person, not just Patrick, but his friends and also some of the random people. But I also felt more sympathy towards Patrick by the end. Yes, he's a horrible person, but he's clearly insane, but can't get any help from anyone. The book also satirizes the yuppie lifestyle much more than the movie. The yuppie lifestyle is what Patrick hides behind, but it might also be a big reason for his insanity.

I always thought that the movie adaptation missed out on one of the central themes of the book. The way that all of Bateman's colleagues confuse each other since they all act, dress, and look the same was more important in the book and was less involved in the movie. The rampage scene and conclusion in the movie didn't do the book justice since it misses out on the fact that all of Bateman's crimes were being attributed to Marcus since they both looked the same and were frequently confused with each other. I do think that the movie was great though and the book too is an American classic

Yeah, the super white modern apartment was enough to give me the heebiejeebies. Donald apparently met the author and there is a picture of them together. The author stated that it was not to make Donald look negatively though. The obsession with Donald Trump is the obsession with a Rich lifestyle and over access that they have. Everyone is trying to be Donald Trump that is why everyone looks the same and dresses the same. My interpretation was it was trying to say that psychopaths are attracted to being powerful enough to get away with anything and they are all pretending to be something they are not anyway.

There were many times I was ready to just stop and not go on. I read it on Audible and it's the most vile descriptions I'd ever experienced. Until Mindhunter, the book that the Netflix series is based on. I know that Thomas Harris had access to the FBI files and much of what he writes about taking place in his books is straight out of actual killers and what they did. Almost to the point of plagiarism. Thankfully Mindhunter doesn't dwell on the descriptions but there's still passages in there that make me think that Bret may have also gained access to the FBI files for research purposes, because some of the killers they caught did things just as vile as *book* Patrick Bateman. Chilling.

Monica Lawhorn, It's not an easy read but more than the violence and debauchery, parts were written to be boring on purpose (usually when Pat's talking about music or fashion) as not to make the reader too fond of Bateman. A technique I haven't seen before or since.

patrick is not a product of his environment, but is a psychopath in the right place at the right time. PERFECT. we still get to see the products of excess wealth and privilege set as a detail/ background for the story. the interesting dynamic is seeing how these greedy yuppies live lives that are based entirely on both status and materialistic one-upmanship excesses with patrick taking this to a whole other depraved and psychotic level.

Really like this book. The discriptions of everything eighties is just so mind numbingly tedious that I can barely stand to read it for any lenght of time, not to mention the graphic nature of the violence, but it's still captivating in it's own way and always sticks in my mind for ages. It's like a painting of hell and all the worst things in existence, done in incredible detail by a truly talented hand.

A good point was the difference of time spent on details. I never felt like it was all in his head in the movie but a few scenes do stand out. When he physically confronts his lawyer who mistakes him for someone else then Bateman acts confused can seem confusing. That's another yuppie thing. I think that Bateman could've even mistaken Allen so he's unsure that he even killed him and killed someone else instead or that everyone else was mistaking someone else for Allen. Another scene is Bateman's gun spree but even that to me is just a showcase of his psychotic persona and despair for catharsis clashing with the harsh reality. He could have delusions but the focus of the story in both pieces is still the culture satire that everything is self-centered and no one cares.
