The story I heard about the meaning of this song is that Tuomas wrote it because he was sick of other guys looking at his girlfriend at the time. Hence the line, 'I wish I had your angel tonight'. This song is one of their more radio friendly songs, so while great it doesn't really showcase Tarja's vocals as well as some other songs do. I second the suggestions of End of all Hope, Wishmaster, and Phantom of the Opera as they are all great ones of hers. Tarja is a much more operatic singer than Floor, so to me it isn't so much a who is better than, as their styles and techniques are just different. Floor absolutely can do the operatic stuff, she's amazing at it, but her real strength is in her versatility. There also WAS a singer in between Tarja and Floor, Anette. She gets a lot of hate that isn't deserved in my opinion. She is a lot more of a pop singer and doesn't have the range or versatility that the other two have, but she's still great.

I prefer the old Nightwish, with it dark passion. In contrast the "new" Nightwish became more commercial and pop band at my taste. Floor is great, she's great vocalist, great performer but still I prefer Tarja.

The original singer's name is Tarja (rhymes with "ARIA"). She was with the band from 1996-2005. The split wasn't amicable and many fans have STRONG opinions about it. What matters is she has done well as a solo artist and there has been forgiveness from both sides. She and Floor are also good friends. The best songs to check her out are "Nemo" and "Phantom of the Opera" from the END OF AN ERA concert. The second lead singer was Annette Olzon from 2017-2012. Many fans didn't care for her for her more pop vocals compared to Tarja. Her departure from the band was also not amicable. I think the official video for "Amaranth" is Anette at her best! She's a great singer, just not a great fit. From 2013-present, God (aka- Floor) has been the lead singer.

Tarja was the singer when I first got into Nightwish, and her vocals were a big part of me becoming a fan. I fell away after she left, as I wasn’t a fan of Anette in comparison, but Floor got me back into Nightwish and I personally prefer her versatility and range and she’s taken them to a new level. The keyboarder is definitely the same guy, that’s Toumas, he’s the founder, songwriter and composter of nearly all their music.

I like Tarja's voice and can not really get into Anette's voice that much and have tried. For me Floor isn't just the best singer for Nightwish, but the best singer and front person I have ever heard. Floor's versatility is just unbelievable for me, she can sing anything, any style.

This song was part of the Waken concert in 2013 - so Floor.sang it too. Do a comparison. Lyrically it's basically a metal version of Jesse's Girl. (I wish that I had Jesse's girl. Why can't I find her - a woman like that.) Before Floor there were two other singers, Tarja (the original) and Anette (the 2nd). This is still not completely the original line-up. Marko wasn't their first bassist. Their first bassist was Sami Vänskä who was fired around 2000 and the replaced by Marko. You should really see a live performance with Tarja as their lead singer. Slaying the Dreamer from End of an Era is a good performance. I think also Tarja is better live. Nightwish rose to fame with Tarja. When Floor joined the band, they were already huge. Tarja was fired from Nightwish due to some conflict with Tarja, Tarja's husband (her manager) and the band. The reasons are still to this day unclear but to be fair, we have no right to know them if the band members don't want to us to know. It was a huge sh*t storm in the media at the time. Still some fans fight over who is the "best" singer. After Tarja's era came Anette Olzon. She wasn't really liked that much by all the fans. Lots of them wanted Tarja back. I think the two albums that Anette was in were magnificent. I don't think you can really say which is the "better" singer, it's more like which one you prefer or what singer you prefer out of those three. And I would also like to point out that Tarja was quite young in this. I think her voice is beautiful and very powerful (so is Floor's) but I prefer what Tarja's voice evolved into after her time in Nightwish. After Nightwish Tarja started her own, very successful, solo career that is still going. She trained her voice more and more. Nowadays Tarja has this very dark, strong chest voice that you can't really hear when she was still in Nightwish. She still has those high operatic notes aswell but her vocal range has just become huge.

Anette was singer number two for Nightwish and she had more of a pop voice, while Tarja was 100% classical. Both Tarja and Anette were good in their own right, but Floor is on an entirely different level as she can sing anything from death growls to opera and everything in between. Tarja Turunen was formed and graduated as an opera singer, which it has helped her to develop quickly symphonic gothic metal abilities. For me and 'old Nightwish' fans who were teenagers at the beginning of 00', Tarja was definitely the best singer of Nightwish, but also an excellent musician. Anette´s Vocals with song called Bye Bye beautiful has been streamed more than 148 million times by YT, or more because there is an other Bye Bye Beautiful by Anette and about 12 million streams. For me Tarja's version of this song is better. First, strictly subjective, this band composition was what got me into music and Nightwish, so the nostalgia will make me always see this one as best version of the band, second, more objectively - Tuomas is the composer and he creates songs with singer's capabilities in mind - and it can be heard. Floor is great, but in songs written for Tarja, she's the best imo. I don't know how Tarja would do in songs written for Floor, but I guess I'd prefer Floor in them. But their both performances are great, the differenece isnt's that great. Annette had differend type of vocals, and she didn't perform that good in older songs - but when she sang ones written for her, it sounded good (just not in original Nightwish's spirit, that's what put many people off).

Just NO - this is the best video and there is live in "End of an Era" for this - The best live. Tarja made NW possible with Tuomas and then came the replacements and substitutes. Actually all the NW singers are great and some songs do "belong" to them where they are at their best. Tuomas wrote these songs just for them and for their voices.

Thanks for another visit in the world of Nightwish. Stay with the Floor versions and don't waste your time on Tarja and Anette. There are so many songs left to watch and react to. Some of the more heavy songs/ stories are still ahead. "The poet and the pendelum" are a masterpiece and is about the band creator and keyboardist Toumas time when he was down and thinking about suicide. A spoiler to that song is that in one part of the song a voice says he only have 3 minutes back to live, and exactlly 3 minutes later the blade cuts loudly...
