Tatiana (vocalist) discovered that women could growl and decided to learn how to do it, about 15+ years ago. She spent a long time getting a deep sound - she wanted to be competitive with male growling. Her sound is good technique and a lot of hard work. Her clean vocal range is pretty impressive too, high to low and style to style. The rest of the band are very technical too. The bassist is very playful, the drummer is syncopated beyond belief and the guitarist is a shy prodigy. Interesting group of humans.

Good reaction. The singer is Tatiana. Jinjer is from Ukraine. She is doing a special vocal technique called "false chord" screaming/growling. It's very difficult to learn. She isn't the only one who does it but because it's biology everyone who does it sounds different doing it (not like duplicating the sound of your favorite guitar player). The false chords are above your actual vocal chords and extend over the vocal chords when you swallow to help keep food from going down the wrong way. Singers who learn this technique learn to control those otherwise involuntary muscles to make sounds. They then use their mouth and tongue to shape the sound because what comes from the false chords doesn't actually have a pitch it's just noise. The technique doesn't use the vocal chords at all but if the singer wants to add extra sounds to the technique they can do that by using the vocal chords. Done wrong the technique can destroy your voce because you can think you are using the false chords when you are actually using the vocal chords. Tatiana has been doing this technique for roughly 15 years now. The song is about her personality as someone born under the astrological sign of Pisces. Describing the duality in her character. On stage for instance she is known for her dynamic stage presence but off stage she is an introvert. Quiet, shy and withdrawn. If you want a good example of how she sounds live check out Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air, Pit of Consciousness Live in Kiev, Captain Clock Live at Resurrection Fest, Cloud Factory Official Live (that one is eye candy BTW) or Outlander Live at Loudfest. The actual number of good Jinjer songs on KZbin live and studio is actually too long to list.
@slcncr

Thanks a lot for this explanation, you seem to know what you are talking about. I was actually wondering if she would be able to make it through a 2 hour concert singing like this, at least in parts of her songs. It sounds harmful and damaging to the vocal chords, but like you said, it actually isn´t. VERY impressive technique, and she has mastered it.
@spamfilter32
@spamfilter32 Жыл бұрын
@@slcncr if done correct it isn't damaging, and you can tell she has good technique because of the part of the song in the last 1/3 where she is growing and then switches instantly to melodic singing. If your technique is off by even a little, your voice will crack on the switch, her voice is clean and smooth, so she can maintain this with out hurting her vocal cords indefinitely.

These lyrics are written in Tatiana's second or third language (after russian and Ukrainian): Pisces swimming through the river All their life against the stream Searching for a hook to catch on and see their sun beam Then suffocate in painful tortures On cutting tables of callous men Under a knife of handsome butchers Emeralds are ripped away That's poetry right there.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless Жыл бұрын
Eugene wrote the last part of the lyrics for this song. It originally had an entirely different ending. Both he and Tatiana are Pisces and he commented that when he wrote part of the lyrics he found that he wasn't writing about someone else like he had planned, he was writing about himself.
@justinatest9456
@justinatest9456 Жыл бұрын
@@neilpatrickhairless If those are Eugene's lyrics I'm absolutely shocked. I always interpreted them as very feminine - a girl fearful of being physically or emotionally hurt by male aggression, and ultimately having her "emeralds ripped away". Basically a song about assault, I assumed. Eugene being a Pisces makes sense with that duality. He is a BJJ guy and slavic - he is a tough guy from a tough part of the world - but he also seems very gentle, particularly when it comes to Tatiana.
@Kasino80
@Kasino80 Жыл бұрын
@@neilpatrickhairlessI've always loved the duality in the lyrics as well as the change in melodic structure that occurs from the first two verses to the third. Both types fit, but are distinctly unique.

Classic. There's a lot of girls who can do that. Including an 11 year old british girl called Harper who sounds shockingly similar. Growling comes from your false chords, so it's not really a location in the throat as you'd expect from normal singing. It's not really harder for women than men either because of that. Though obviously it's more surprising. Also gotta keep requesting my boys Sleep Token. The Summoning's a very unique experience.

One of the best ever is Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev, then who's gonna be the one , then Vortex live at Hellfest 2021 and much more. This band really brings something new to the table and this is probably one of the most underratted band at the moment: I mean they are getting big little by little but they really deserve much much more. That's 100% Tatiana's voice. It took her years to perfect her technique. She isn't damaging her vocal cords. She's using an area call the false vocal cords. If she was putting stress on her vocal cords it would be physical impossible for her to translation smoothly from harsh to clean vocals. Stressing the vocal cords would cause the voice to crack and hers never does. You need to have the Lyrics handy. I recommend thier song Teacher Teacher Tatiana's vocal translations are seamless and mindboggling. Then react to Perennial (live) at Wacken Then Judgement and Punishment Tatiana's one take vocal performance version.

Guys I know you don’t mean it that way and we’re all having fun but, as metal musician, it could be seen as disrespectful to our genera to assume the growling isn’t real. It’s a very technical skill. It is not easy to perform in a healthy way. But to answer your question yes that is her voice there is some compassion on the voice but there is no pedal that makes you sound like that. Check out some live jinjer and see for yourselves.

Think you guys would like their live preformance of Perennial. You guys could also check out the band Slaughter To Prevail, the usual first song is Demolisher but Baba Yaga is my recommendation. If it wasnt for the shock factor i am sure you guys would have caught on that pisces is two fish swimming in different directions, and this song's lyrics speak about duality (and the contrast in clean/harsh vocals adds to it) and it is a song that the singer Tatiana wrote as she is a pisces and experiences that duality in her persona.

Screaming and growling are just another extreme of what the voice can do...listen to the lyrics..do a deep . "scaled armour, blaze virgin innocence, one being brings life, another runs for death.".....Super talented..the whole band. Yeah growling shouldn't damage your vocal chords, but absolutely can if done with bad technique. It's actually not that hard to learn the basics. For example your pissed off about something and you just cry out, "Arrrrragh." You should feel it at the back of your mouth and your throat open out. Then comes breathing control and few other bits, but that is a good start point. Plenty of growling tutorials on youtube. Just pick someone that has a track record of doing it in a healthy way.

Funny reaction, it just never gets old watching people listen to Jinjer for the first time. Jinjer is a Ukranian band (Eastern Ukraine, Donbas Region) that has been around since 2009. Tatiana "Tati" is the vocalist, Vlad on drums, Eugene on bass, and Roman on guitar. Tati's growling technique uses false cords/vocal folds to produce that deep sound, and when done correctly it does not damage the vocal cords. She taught herself how to produce that sound when she was much younger. If you're curious about whether she can do that in a "live" performance, check out "Perennial" (Live at Wacken 2019) and "Judgement & Punishment" (One Take Vocal). You might also enjoy "Teacher, Teacher" (Official Video or Live in Melbourne). Jinjer songs vary quite a lot in structure and sound, but they are ALL awesome! As for "genre," they are a Metal band, and many put them in the sub-genre "Progressive Metalcore." However, they are rather unique and have a sound that is really all their own. Tati's influences include: metal, reggae, hip-hop, and jazz. Vlad is a classicly trained pianist who only started playing drums around 2015. Eugene and Roman are self-taught on the bass and guitar. Lyrically, Tati writes the songs after Vlad, Eugene, and Roman compose the music and send her the demos. I hope you decide to react to more Jinjer and look forward to seeing it if/when you do!

Definitely look into more Jinjer, Tatiania is an unreal vocalist, my favourite is Judgement & punishment, the one take vocal performance.

This is recorded live. There is a slightly more polished studio version. But yeah, that's what she's like live.

Dude, usually I like your reactions, but this whole "haha, that's how women are, right?" spiel was unnecessary and kind of annoying, you can (and usually do) better. The song itself and Tati's voice is amazing, and I'm happy to see you checked out the band again already, but this wasn't exactly a highlight.

They do this a lot, unsurprisingly. It's frustrating to watch.

There are no bad songs in Jinjer's discography. Live they're amazing and there are some extraordinary music videos too.. Vortex! Crime and Punishment are 2 great ones.. Perennial Live at Wacken is the standard next choice.. I'm partial to Who's gonna be the one.

I agree. There are definitely some songs that are better than others but even going back to before any of the members that are in this band were even in this band, they were pretty solid. Infact, quite a lot of people prefer "Jinjer Jr.", or the era before Vlad joined the band and quite a lot of people prefer the band as they are now. But all of the people that like this band like them for the same reason: They are good musicians throughout all the lineup changes. Even their awkward growing pains stage was a lot better than a lot of bands' best stuff.

This is a Ukrainian group. I always recommend checking out "Home Back". It's about them being forced to leave their homes in Donbas when the Russians first invaded in 2014. You'll probably want the lyrics pulled up if you have a hard time understanding the distorted vocals. In case of a military draft, a couple of the guys were required to stay in Ukraine at the start of this latest Russian invasion, but they've now been allowed to leave and tour. The song is sadly still very relevant.

I think that song is the most important song they have ever done. And one of the most important songs of recent memory. You can physically see how angry it makes Tatiana to sing it live as well, she gets very intense and it's hard to see if you know this band's backstory throughout the years

I'm sure other comments have pointed this out - JINJER is a Ukranian Metal Band whose homeland is being blown to pieces. Tatiana is the singer - she's awesome. PISCES is an astrological sign (ZODIAC) and Nepture is the sea god - if you have time to check out the lyrics on GENIUS LYRICS, the song is very meaningful, even moving - though on first listen it may be hard to pick up, but when I checked official lyrics with what I'm hearing, Tatiana has it all there even in the growling. Towards the end when she flips from the growl to the high belt, that's pretty amazing. When you listen to other songs of theirs - later songs - I lbelieve you really hear how all the iinstrumentalists are excellent.

Jinjer - Retrospection (Live in Melbourne) Many will suggest Perennial, however that is a little on the softer side. Retrospection also starts off in her native tongue. They are from Ukraine, and speak Russian..

Welcome to the Jinjer Army. That is Tatiana's real voice and if you want to see her live, watch Perennial (Live in Wacken), Pit of Consciousness (Live in Kiev), and Judgement and Punishment (One take vocals) to hear her full range. I would throw in I Speak Astronomy, Vortex, Wallflower, and Homeback in original video format. There is no bad Jinjer song.

The irony of Jinjer becoming famous (at least, in the metal community) based on the reactions to Tatiana’s vocal abilities in this song…and the fact that this video was only done as a means to introduce their (at the time) “new” drummer, Vlad. These four people are generational talents. Soak it in, gentlemen!

The band doesn't like that this was the song and video that broke them to a wider audience. This song is actually older than most people know, and has been rewritten and re-recorded several times. I don't think the band feels that it was ever truly a "complete" song in that they have ever really been happy with it. Several of the members have said that they wished that "I Speak Astronomy" had been people's introduction to them on a bigger scale.
