Li YuGang is a famous Beijing opera singer, specializing in female roles. In Chinese operas, just as in Western operas, there are both arias and recitatives. At first he sang in aria style, then in the final section, he was singing in recitative (speaking) while Dimash was singing. Li YuGang is also famous as a crossover singer (from Beijing opera to pop), and this particular song is entitled New Consort Gets Intoxicated, because it’s a pop version composed by Li based on the classic opera describing a scene where the legendary beauty Consort Yang got herself drunk out of disappointment and despair when Emperor Tang Ming Huang betrayed his promise to love only her and never go back to any of his three thousand wives and concubines. The tragedy is when a rebellion forced him to flee the capital, and his own imperial guards refused to accompany him any further unless he executed Yang, whom the people believed to be the cause of the country’s disaster. In tears, he had to send her a tray with a five-foot long piece of white silk. She understood the command, found a pear tree behind the temple where they were hiding, and she hung herself. She was only 35 years old. In this performance, Dimash plays the emperor while Li plays Consort Yang. Some of the lyrics are so poignant.

Love this performance!!! Drunken Concubine in dialogue the tragic story between a famous concubine of the Chinese imperial court, Li Yugang in that role, and the emperor, Dimash’s rol that’s why the throne at stage. At the end of the story the concubine is poisoned as a result of court intrigues. Li Yugang is a famous artist considered China’s National Treasure and he is a nan dan singer (male playing female roles) art forms from Peking Opera, giving the traditional art a modern edge. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he couldn’t study in the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely autodidact which is so admirable!! 👌👍💥 ❤️🎤🔝 One of the things a I love the most of Dimash is his versatility and his ability to show us different cultures through the music. In this case with Li Yugang, they have made a perfect match with the traditional Peking Opera style, beautiful 🌟

This is likely my favorite duet but Ulysse and the Pistol Duel with the male Opera singer come as close seconds.
