During their comedy shows whenever anyone coughed or sneezed, Eric would shout out Arsenal. It originated from Eric playing a Mr Memory character who could not remember anything so Ernie would prompt him with a cough, after which he would shout Arsenal. Seemed popular so it stuck

BBC2 and/or Channel 5 still repeat Morecambe and Wise at Christmas and I watch that repeat no matter what. There's three things that make Christmas for me. Nine lessons and carols on Radio 4, the Christmas message (although it's still not quite the same with the Queen) and Morecambe and Wise. If one of those are missing, Christmas is ruined!

Morcambe and Wise were a juggernaut of a comedy duo in the UK from the 1960's through to the early 1980's. They commanded absolutely huge TV viewing figures especially with their Christmas specials and were known for having famous guests on who they made fun of, and it was kind of an honour to be asked to appear on the show. Eric Morcambe died in 1984 thus the comedy duo ended, Ernie Wise (a broken man after Eric's death as they were really close) died in 1999. They are sorely missed.

The "cough" followed by Eric shouting, "Arsenal" was a running gag that originated in an earlier sketch. Eric flinching was nothing to do with Ernie. That was another occasional gag where he would do that, implying that someone had pinched his backside. Mispronouncing Magnus Magnusson's name was a set up for the last throwaway gag when Ernie said, "I'll never watch you wrestling again." On Saturday afternoons there used to be a programme called "World of Sport" which had a wrestling section with a host of wrestlers who became household names in the 70s. One was called Mick McManus.

Magnus Magnusson was the real host of Mastermind for many years. He was born in Iceland and had a prolific career in the UK. His daughter Sally Magnusson is now a prominent journalist and TV presenter. Mastermind is a long-running quiz show, running for over 50 years, and was inspired by the creators experience of being interrogated during WW2. It's regarded as one of the more challenging quiz shows, and these days features in a evening-long lineup on Monday (referred to in our house as 'Quiz Night') of Mastermind, Only Connect and University Challenge. Participants face two rounds of questions, one on their own chosen 'specialist subject' and a second round of General Knowledge. There is also a Celebrity edition. Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise (commonly known as 'Morecambe and Wise' or 'Eric and Ernie') were one of the most successful and popular comedy duos in UK history. Ernie generally played the straight man and Eric the fool, though that wasn't always the case, and their show was often mixture of straight-up comedy sketches, comedic monologues and celebrity guests. Many celebrities gained great public by affection by appearing with Eric and Ernie, the conductor Andre Previn's appearance being a great favourite.

Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise - one of the finest (if not the finest) comedy duos of British history. They've got so many brilliant sketches you need to check out - Mr. Andre Preview, Singin in the Rain, and Breakfast for Two to name just three. They were just brilliant at everything they did, and I can't praise them highly enough. (also if you want context for the "Arsenal" part then you should check out their Mr Memory sketch - it became a running gag starting then) Also Mastermind is one of my favourite quiz shows. Essentially you pick a subject you know pretty much everything about and answer questions on it, and then you get some general knowledge questions after that. A simple premise really, but pulled off brilliantly. Little fact - the show's creator drew inspiration for this quiz from being interrogated by the Gestapo in WW2.

As pointed out below, Morecambe and Wise were comedy legends in the UK; they'd been together since the 1940s and after a disastrous series on the BBC "Running Wild" almost spilt up, but went back to the music hall theatres and began again from scratch, In the early 60's, they again tried their hands at a TV show, this time on the Independent Television Network (commercial TV), called "Two of a Kind" with scriptwriters Sid Collin and Dick Hills, who would appear in some of their sketches. Try to find the routine they did with The Beatles on the show. They made a few films in the early 60's which weren't that good to be honest. In 1967 Eric had a heart attack and Sid and Dick reckoned he'd retire, as did ITV, so they headed back to the BBC - with new scriptwriter Eddie Braben - who'd witnessed their act at the Liverpool Empire at the start of their careers and thought they were awful. As many have mentioned, their shows - especially the Christmas Day ones - were "must watch" events in the UK.

Eric and Ernie got together during the war, when Eric's mum took Ernie who was travelling alone under her wing. They amused themselves during air raids making up sketches , and she suggested they become a double act (they were separate acts before that, Ernie having been on stage with his dad at the age of five.) The rest is history. There was an excellent film about them written and starring comedian Victoria Wood, who is sadly no longer with us either.

Morecambe & Wise, or Eric & Ernie, were THE comedy duo from the late 60's to the early 80's, They did a series of 1 hour variety show followed by a Christmas special which was part of most families Christmas Day rituals. Their shows were a mixture of stand up, skteches, songs and short plays 'wot Ernie wrote' which normally including famour guest stars. Eric was mostly the comedic partner and Ernie the straight man. The Christmas Shows were fantastic and they invited famous guest stars on to , well, get ridiculed. Even so, it was deemed a great honour to be invited on the show and the people they had on were the creme de la creme of popular entertainers. So many fond memories!

Harrow University (No such place then, the University of Westminster has an outpost there now) , comes from the fact that in the late 1960s and 1970s Ernie Wise was living in South Harrow, on the slopes of Harrow-on-the-Hill, near the Harrow Public School (Very slightly POSH, where Churchill was schooled.). This was convenient for him because it was only a few miles from outer cental London where most of the TV and rehearsal studios were located. He was often seen in South Harrow high street where he occasionally shopped. He used to visit the stationers and confectioners shop that my father ran in that high street and was a frequent purchaser of musical greetings cards ! Eric and Ernie had a long-running gag about Ernie being tight with money and that there were moths living in his wallet (Billfold to you) because it was so infrequently opened ! I was told that when he visited the shop, the wallet was produced in much the same way as portrayed on the show.

Happy days… I remember once when I was 8 or 9 I was playing on the path to our farmyard, with one sandal off my foot when the cry came from the house “Come and fix the telly!” as I was the only person with a sure enough touch on the horizontal hold knob to stop the picture rolling, so dad could watch the wrestling - so I quickly ended up hopping up the path to the house!

There were a lot of cultural references you could not possibly have got. When Eric said at the end that he would never watch Magnus Magnusson wrestle again he was confusing him with contemporary wrestler Mick McManus. The Morecambe & Wise show was a major TV show from the early sixties through to the early eighties. If memory recalls they started off on ITV which was a commercial channel but were grabbed by the BBC in the late 1960's , that was when they became a major TV phenomena. Famous people from all over the film, TV, theatre & musical industry clambered to be on their show and have the rise taken out of them .. they loved it. Magnus Magnussen really WAS the quiz master on MASTERMIND and his opening patter used in this show is exactly what he said when doing the proper show. Unfortunately it all came to a crashing end when Eric Morecambe had a massive heart attack and died as he stepped off stage in 1984. Ernie didn't want to go on without his partner of 44 years and decided to retire from the business. Ernie passed alway in 1999.

They are classic comedians whose timing was perfect. The reason why Eric jumped was to suggest that he had been 'Goosed'. The Arsenal gag was one that was regularly used. Eric was a supporter of Luton Town football club and at one time he was a co chairman. Watch more of there stuff. You might not recognise some of the faces but the humour surpasses that. Enjoy Eric an Ernie they were legends. Good luck buddy.

The funny thing is that something like this happened on a real game show in the UK where the answer was pass 🤣 it was on a game show called the chase.

They also made several comedy films in which Morecombe performed several well rehearsed film stunts. For this he was awarded the accolade “Honorary Stunt Performer” by Stunt Performers themselves. See their comedy sketch with Andre Previn the famous orchestra conductor playing the part of the straight man.

Magnus Magnuson was the chair of Mastermind back in the 70's and 80's it was a tough quiz in real life. If you thought that Eric and Earnie did a goid Mastermind scetch then try watching The two Ronnies Mastermind scetch.

I do not know what to say. These guys joined forces before the second world war. By the early 1970s they were literally the biggest comedy act in Britain BAR NONE. And maybe you have to be a part of the culture to appreciate it more fully. Indeed, the duo had appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in the late 1960s - but their humour could never truly translate. And perhaps that is for the best. Because they belong to us.

Magnus Magnusson was a genuine TV quiz master as well as a journalist, Icelandic by birth but who lived most of his life in Scotland. At the time this was filmed his show, Mastermind, with the iconic chair and music, was a huge BBC TV quiz show

_Morecambe & Wise_ were THE most popular TV comedy show in the UK during the 1970s. They seemed to have appeal to all age groups with their own brand of quasi-childish 'silly' humour. They had lots of standing jokes, two of which feature here: 1) Eric (with spectacles) nearly always pelvic flinched when he walked past a show guest, to feign that they'd _goosed_ him. The concept of Eric, as a singularly _unsexy_ specimen, being goosed by some cute, sexy actress was always hilarious. Here Eric is making out that _Ernie_ goosed him. 2) Schoolboy humour was to utter a swearword as you _coughed_ to cast doubt on whether you had actually uttered a curseword. The UK football team 'Arsenal' sounds like a curse word (arsehole), so Eric would always utter the name 'Arsenal' whilst coughing. Here, it's associative, with Ernie coughing, followed by Eric yelling 'Arsenal'. Their funniest sketches were ones done with show guests. If you can find the one they did, where they hired a jobbing pianist - which turned out to be a twenty-something _Elton John_ - that is absolutely hysterical. PS You can tell Elton was only in his 20s back then, because he's _bald!_ As he's gotten older, EJ seems to have gotten more'n'more hirsute, somehow.

Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise - arguably Britain's greatest ever double-act. The "(cough) Arsenal!" was a running joke through many of their shows. They ruled television during the 1960s and 1970s with a variety show featuring comedy sketches and special guests. Paul McCartney has said that his all-time favourite Beatles appearance was when they were guests on the Morecambe and Wise show, and you can't get better than that. Check out their sketch with orchestral conductor Andre Previn, or their breakfast preparation sketch.

Mastermind was a serious programme but with Eric and Ernie it was for fun. Eric and Ernie were adored and had their own programme for years, with famous guests. Kenny Everett was an outrageous comic at same time.

Morecambe and Wise and also the two Ronnie's were 70's comic duo icons. Mastermind is also a British quiz institution and that was really the host Magnus Magnusson. The two Ronnie's also did a sketch based on Mastermind that is also funny.

70's uk comedians had what not a lot of modern comedians of today have and that's warmth and Eric and Ernie had a huge amount of it with Eric being so well loved it seemed like the entire nation went into mourning when he died and the only other comedian of recent times i can say the same thing about that happening was Paul O'Grady another much missed and loved man.

Magnus had an Icelandic name. He was highly educated, and a great sport for appearing in this role. Morecambe and Wise were a very funny comedy duo from the 1960s to mid 1980s. It's another avenue you could explore. Great comedy.

'Mastermind' is a fairly highbrow TV Quiz, in which each of 4 contestants answers a round of questions on their 'Specialist Subject' and then a general knowledge round. The winner of each show goes on to the quarter and then semi-finals and at the end of the series someone is presented with an award, and crowned 'Mastermind 2024' (or whatever) Magnus Magnusson was the real host of the serious show for many years. There's a lot of stuff in the sketch which requires you to know context and background to British Life and Morcombe and Wise in particular.....It's a funny sketch, but not sure it translates well across the pond or over 50 years.....
