This is a very difficult area to navigate and even now still divides families, friendships and even some communities. My own thoughts are that with a general election looming and many people feeling the dire economic pinch, UK voters will get very angry if the economic situation doesn't improve. Whether a voter chose leave or remain they did not vote for being worse off.

Key difference is with an EU passport you can not take up residency in any EU country, including the ability to stay as long as you want, work and attend school. Between Canada - US as an example it is fairly easy to travel between the two countries for up to 3 months but if you want to stay longer or work you need to apply as an immigrant.

Most of the people in the video where not British but they looked to be in Britain, that was one of the issues in Brexit, immigration. Travel wise leaving the EU has made very little difference, I went to France, Belgium, Netherlands & Germany last year and only showed my passport once at the channel tunnel which was exactly the same as pre-Brexit. I think maybe working and studying in EU countries may have become slightly more difficult, but only slightly, and now we don't have a parliament in Brussels telling us what we can an cannot do.

FOM is great for people who can earn more money by working in another country but dreadful for the countries left behind as all the young leave instead of helping to improve it. Meanwhile, the countries that they move to have cheap labour on the one hand and people who another country has paid to train on the other. In the UK it meant a depression of wages for unskilled and lower skilled jobs which made it hard for natives to make a living. It also destroyed training programmes, in engineering at one end and nurses at the other. Why pay to train a nurse when you just can import one? A very complex issue and those it benefits love it, those it disadvantages hate it.
@jeanbicknell7887
@jeanbicknell7887 Ай бұрын
Correct, and the fact is that it was the higher skilled, higher earners of the UK who love/d the EU who voted to remain and they comprise the minority of the UK population. The majority felt that they were being disadvantaged by EU immigrants, mostly from the poorer countries, who came in and worked for less money than the British could and so took their jobs and left them on the dole. They were in the majority and so voted to leave. Obviously that is a simplistic view and there were other factors too but I believe that was the main reason.

You're right. If the US state governments were the most important but a weaker federal government still existed to set a few overall rules. You would still be able to go from RI to Connecticut, Texas, or ever Alaska without a passport. State laws would differ between states, but the federal government would still set a few basic standards. That's pretty much Europe. Every country has its own government, and the European assembly sets some overall rules. And no passports are needed to travel between the EU's countries. (Lack of) Freedom of movement is a huge problem in Northern Ireland - many people live on one side of the border and work on the other - which was fine until the UK left the EU. Now it's a major stumbling block for many communities.

The Freedom of Movement was one of primary reasons that people voted in support of Brexit. The trigger for the referendum in the first place was that Angela Merkel and the other EU leaders refused David Cameron's request to restrict Freedom on Movement to the UK. Citizens of the UK and the Republic of Ireland still have Freedom of Movement between each other's countries, an agreement that long predated either country joining the EU.

The Freedom of movement of the EU has its limitations, but it's for each country to decide. You cannot go and stay in France, for instance, forever. After three months you have to find a job. The UK government wanted cheap labour and did not apply these conditions. It is a FACT. Another fact is that the UK population at large is not aware of this, because they cannot be bothered to be interested enough in politics. The immigration policies on each of the EU countries is in the hand of the country, not the EU. The fact that half of the immigration in the UK was coming from commonwealth countries was not mentioned either.

I can’t believe what I’ve just watched. The woman that said freedom of movement brought security is deluded. We’ve got major problems in this country, as have many countries within Europe that are suffering like us due to uncontrolled immigration. As for the person that said the UK had a declining population, what planet are they on? Despite a relatively small land area, we are on track to be the second largest nation in Europe by the second half of this century, and our public services can’t cope. I've lived away from the UK for 35 years, first in Germany and then in Netherlands, now in Belgium. Every 2 weeks we go on a shopping trip that starts in Belgium, then goes to Germany and finishes in Netherlands. Three different sets of prices, no visible border and no passports, and of course, one currency and one credit card. Thanks to Brexit I am reluctantly forced to become a Belgian citizen. Only the right wing millionaires wants to restrict the freedom of movement for working people. They have enough money to not face much hassle at borders. Poor students who (in my day) could educate themselves in Europe, have lost that opportunity.

London has around 9 million but the U.K. population is around 67 million. So, why does everything centre around London and the opinions of young, middle class millennials views about lecturing the entire country about why we no longer have freedom of movement with the EU. Brexit happened and we are never going back. If the economy is in a state it’s because Brexit was sabotaged from the get go, which is why we have an unelected PM who voted remain to stay in the EU, and doesn’t really believe in Brexit. Also, we had the pandemic on top of Brexit, and the Ukraine war, and the governments agenda to push up the cost of living as much as possible because it won’t abandon its policies on Net 0 which is making our bills and energy expensive and unsustainable. The government has failed for decades to invest in Britain to make it energy independent. And a country with high energy costs cannot manufacture anything and will be an expensive country to live in, when we are also not building enough housing as well. No to the EU! 🇬🇧

As out of the 187 soverign states in the world only 29 are part of the ""Schengen Area" that leaves 158 requiring travel documents, showing that freedom of movement is not a right. This video is BS. Notice how all these people singing the virtues of FoM are foreigners (i.e. not British)? That's because virtually everyone in Europe speaks fluent English as a second language, but very few British born people speak a European language to a level were you could realistically live and work in another European country (I know because I tried it and had to come back after 6 months because no one would employ me because I couldn't speak their language). The net result was that in all the time the UK was in the EU only around 1m people from the UK ever moved there (mostly well-off retirees who had a second home in Spain) whilst 7m EU citizens (mostly young people looking for work) came to the UK. Far more British people moved to other English speaking countries outside the EU (US, Australia, Canada etc) despite requiring a visa to do so than utilised EU FoM. Most of our EU migration came in from Eastern Europe where wages were a lot lower so they were motivated by money, not some romantic sense of a love of the UK like this video portrays and all that did was turn once well-paid non-academic jobs (like working in construction or the service industries) into low-paid jobs a UK national could barely live off

Not everyone in Europe speaks fluent English as a second language. Not even half of them do. But yes, it's true, that not speaking a second language is a huge disadvantage. While there might be some jobs in non-English speaking EU countries, for people who only speak English, those usually are somewhat rare and often blocked by complex education and experience requirements. To really be able to re-settle and unlock all of the available options for you, you need to speak the host country language. That's a no-brainer for me.

The UK already had more restrictions regarding this and it wasn't a member of Schengen either. This wasn't possible? It was...

@@user-qj7et4wv3q I do. I used it multiple times and lived in four other EU countries. To really make use of it in all possible ways, you need Schengen. Otherwise it's only good for long a vacation. The UK never was a member of the Schengen area. In order for me to have moved to the UK, I would have needed to study there or to have a job there. Yes, I could have moved without a job or lost that job, but then it was 90 days, until I would have needed a new job in order to stay. You also needed to work for a certain amount of time in the UK to get access to unemployment benefits. NHS came through the job, obviously. It was impossible, to just go there, rent a flat and just live there (unless you did it out of your own pocket and never received or applied for UK government money). Possible in Schengen countries, but never in the UK. Do you live in another version of the UK, that I'm unaware of?

Made AND paid for by 'remainers' prior to the Brexit Vote... It also failed to mention that the UK was NOT part of the Shengen Zone... Also (at time of writing this), neither are Ireland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia or Romania! So passports are still required. 🤔

One sided vid to be honest, it was a sugarcoated way of saying that we weren’t in control of our own immigration/ borders etc. not saying I agreed with brexit, but hardly any varied opinions with these interviewees.

@@Joan-kr1jo That's something we always had control over in the UK, even whiles in the EU, in fact, we could have put boarders up with EU countries whiles in the EU for limited reasons. Immigration was being used as an excuse as that was a hot topic with the people to push an agenda, and being that most people don't know there arse from there elbow on these policies, it was easy for the Brexiteers to blame the EU for all the problems, but clearly after Brexit, it's been made clear that the EU wasn't the problem and immigration to the UK is still high even after supposing getting back control, Brexit was a successful con and a lot of Brits fell for it.
