The idea of The Fast Show was, so its creators Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson have said, to create a show where only catchphrases and punchlines were used but it grew beyond that, although most of the sketches did only last for 30 seconds or so, some only for 10 seconds! The first series was not the strongest but was still hilarious and, by the second series, many, many characters were well-known, their catchphrases used on the street (like "Suit you, Sir"). Once you know they were using this new comedy format of (mostly) very quick sketches, it's worth watching a whole 25 minute episode some time - you'll get it and enjoy it!

The Boomers absolutely have to check out "Sir Rowley Birkin". In my opinion it's one of Paul Whitehouse's finest and funniest characters. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen those monologues they always make me laugh. There's a good video on YT of all the "Sir Rowley Birkin" sketches edited together. I'd love to see them react to that!
@davidsmith7653

There's an episode of the Fast Show where Sir Rowley is reminiscing about the lost love of his life many years before. They broke up because of his alcoholism. In my opinion it's the finest bit of acting I've ever seen and it brought me straight to tears and still does every time I watch it again. I can understand why Johnny thinks that Paul is a great actor. The pathos and regret Paul managed to convey in a couple of short minutes was extraordinary. Even just thinking about that scene after having not watched it for years makes me incredibly emotional. One of my current favourite programmes is Mortimer and Whitehouse Go Fishing which is just so feel-good and life affirming. It's ostensibly about angling but in my view it's more a love story about two great mates who adore each other.

Johnny Depp said he was a huge fan of The Fast Show, which is why he agreed to come on and do a sketch when asked. Johnny Depp also described Paul Whitehouse as the greatest actor he's seen. Perhaps he meant as a character/comedy actor, but a hell a a compliment regardless. They would play lots of different characters in The fast show, and the characters were recurring in all the episodes. It was a sketch show, and as such didn't have a story or anything.

It gets its name from the idea that all the sketches will be short and quick but over the season they may tell a story. Johnny caught the show in his hotel room while filming in England asked for a dvd compilation and loved it so much that he asked Whitehouse if he could make a guest appearance, the rest is history.

The Fast Show has similar characters each week and each week those characters get a little bit more mental. Harry Enfield likes to do the same so it's worth checking out a few clips of the same characters e.g. the American tourists (you've not seen the gay or peekaboo sketches yet). They're all good fun. The Fast show is a Sketch show with the premise that the sketches would be quick. Paul Whitehouse had previously starred and wrote for the Harry Enfield show along with long term writing partner Charlie Higson. For some reason Enfield didn't like Higson and normally vetoed his ideas. But Enfield loved Whitehouse's work and as he and Higson were a team, Higson was also hired but without being able to bring any of his ideas to fruition. As a result Higson had a back log of sketch ideas, and Whitehouse's star was rising from the Harry Enfield appearances. The entire premise behind the Fast show came about with a promo clip for Harry Enfield television show simply showing multiple punch lines from separate sketches in 30 seconds. Some thought the clip was better than the actual show, and maybe they could make a Sketch show that ran through sketches just as fast; hence the fast show. In practice this meant that there would need to be far more sketches than a typical sketch show, so rather than Whitehouse and Higson writing and staring in it alone, so 5 other comedians were invited to star in and write for the show; one of whom was Mark Williams from Harry Potter fame

The Fast Show was amazing back in the 90's. Sketch comedy but very little preamble, pretty much right to the funny hence the name. Johnny Depp used to watch the show as he was married to Vanessa Paradis and lived most of the time in France where he could watch the show. Depp unironically called Paul Whitehouse one of the the greatest actors he had ever seen and became a massive fan. This sketch was from the last ever episode, and came about because he reached out to Whitehouse explaining how much he loved the show etc and asked if he could appear in the final episode. It blew my mind when it happened and it's still pretty mind blowing now. Which is nice.

This was towards the end of the Fast Show run, usually they'd build it up a lot slower through the sketch, but they were always highly inappropriate tailors. They'd just slip in random lines about women and sex as the customer became more and more uncomfortable. The Fast Show was sketches and catchphrases, some of it was just random madness, it doesn't require you to understand anything other than the moment... Like the guy that would come all the way up to the camera just to say "you ain't seen me, right!"

This show was a brand new paradigm! The first one or two shows you'd just be confused. The format relied on you knowing the character and the punchline, so you only REALLY got it the third or fourth time. It was confusing and exhilarating to watch as a teenager! Show anyone a single Fast Show sketch in isolation and their reaction will probably just be confusion (the two pervert tailors are an exception, because they are so blatant in what they say). But the "which is nice" guy, for example, or the "even better than that" guy are just flat the first two times. But that third time... the anticipation is a killer. The drunk QC was funny the first time and then got funnier (before the tragic sketch which almost made me cry). I'd never seen anything like it. I remember that a friend of mine took a while to get a hang of it. "Vic and Bob" were also doing what we dubbed "repeat humour" and my friend loved that but didn't "get" the Fast Show until I pointed out that they were both doing the same thing, but TFS had more characters! Please please please react to the drunken QC. An example.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3TaqqRpjbyYfqc

A girl who was about 15 years old in a class I was teaching returned from an 'errand' to find that her red headed friend had left the class. She uttered the immortal line, " Were's Ginger Minge". I have to admit I cracked up.

YES! Fast Show ❤ The Fast Show was a quick-fire sketch show with lots of different, albeit recurring, characters. It is, in my opinion, untouchable. This was my life growing up. 💥Please react to Fast Show Ted & Ralph Drinking Game💥

A town near me (Upton-Upon=Severn) boasts a Minge Lane. Nearest City (Worcester) had a 'Gropecunt Lane' until the Puritans took over in the 17thC. And I live adjacent to 'Piddle Brook'.
