One of my greatest joys in life is finding someone who has never seen Alan Partridge but just instantly loves it. Me and my friends in school could all pretty much recite entire episodes word for word. Takes me back!

So there used to be a spoof news show on the BBC called The Day Today. Steve Coogan was asked to be the sports reporter and come up with a weird voice for it, but no one could think of a name. While he was doing the voice, one of the production crew said 'he's definitely an Alan', and then someone else came up with Partridge as a surname, and so The Day Today's sports reporter became Alan Partridge. After The Day Today moved TV channels (from the BBC to Channel 4 where it was renamed BrassEye), Alan got his own show on the BBC which was a spoof chat show called Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge. After that, Alan got divorced and his career went into a bit of a hole and he moved into a hotel (the Linton Travel Tavern) because it was equidistant between his home town of Norwich and London. This period of his life is covered in a spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary called I'm Alan Partridge. He then did a number of internet specials where he was hosting a radio show, followed by a movie (Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa) where the radio studio gets invaded by terrorists and Alan has to save the day. Most recently he's presenting another spoof chat show called This Time with Alan Partridge.

just to point out but the radio station was actually taken over by an ex employee and also a somewhat friend of Alan's. Not terrorists.

Started as a sport commentator on The Day Today (spoof News show) then his own chat show called "Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge." Which lasted 1 series before being canned (not for real just for the show), the next series was "I'm Alan Partridge" first season was about trying to get a 2nd series of his chat show whilst living in a Travel Tavern (cheap motel), 2nd season in a caravan whilst building a new house. He worked as a late night early morning DJ for Norfolk Nights radio. After that there was the feature film Alpha Papa, shorts called "Mid Morning Matters with Alan Partridge", "Alan Partridge's Scissored Isle" which is where the first clips of his in the field and woods came from and then a new series in 2019 called "This Time with Alan Partridge". My favourites are definitely I'm Alan Partridge, but it's all good.

"Knowing me, knowing you with Alan Partridge" was first produced as a radio comedy series on BBC radio 4. When it transitioned to television they didn't change the scripts very much and recycled the same material but threw in a lot of visual gags that undermined the subtlety of the original comedy. That being said Alan's always funny whether he's on the radio or the telly.

@@CupidStunt0001 I first heard Alan in 1992 as well. He began on the Radio 4 programme 'On the Hour' (broadcast at 6.30) Stewart Lee and Richard Herring were two of the writers, and it later came to BBC2 as 'The Day Today.'

Did those listeners not listen to the opening credits or read the program entry in the Radio Times? I was studying for my GCSE's at the time and I could tell it was a comedy. Then again it's a tribute to the quality of the show that people thought it was the kind of content that it was actually lampooning. That's impressive.

@@raphaelperry8159 Steve Coogan's original talent was as an inpersonator- he was Margaret Thatcher in Spitting Image amongst other characters. I think he transitioned to TV really well, I love how he manages to dress so badly as Alan and how he manages to look kind of lost as he's trying hard to be fashionable.

It's almost impossible to fully appreciate the comic genius of this character, without having witnessed the rise and fall of his 'career', portrayed over decades on tv, radio, in film and in blogs. Alan Partridge is an incredible creation. His life and career has been closely and lovingly followed by generations, even though we're often cringing with embarrassment at the same time. A beautifully drawn and incredibly detailed character portrait. Incredibly funny too, of course! :)

The US audience, in general, seem to like a joke to have a punchline, and Partridge is more squirm TV than traditional punchline jokes. I'm sure there are lots of people (like King Boomer) who can appreciate this type of comedy, but US TV execs generally cater for the wider majority.

Not sure whether anybody has responded earlier in the comments; but Partridge's reference to "page three stunners" refers to bygone times, when a popular daily 'newspaper'; The Sun, for many years used to picture topless girls on page three of their newspaper. Hard to imagine now, but throughout the 70/80s this was taken for granted. Some of these models, went on to find fame and fortune.

Was waiting for this series with Alan !!! Thank you King Boomer 🤍👊🏼😬👊🏼 Alan started off as a Sports host segment on a spoof News show called " The Day Today ". He then did some " Children in need " hosting. Then developed into a " Chat Show " host ( hilarious ) " Knowing Me, Knowing You ". Then did " I'm Alan Partridge " following his BBC employment dismissal ( 🤭 ) and his employment at his Norfolk Nights radio show. Then he's gone on to do Midmorning Matters radio show, an autobiography, a movie, a host of other amazing Alan acts ... only for him to come back to his roots as a TV host on " BBC " again 👊🏼🤍👊🏼 All crazy funny, but his Midmorning Matters radio show is mind-blowing comedy at It's best 👌🏻 Start with one or two episodes of " Knowing Me, Knowing You " ... then anything from " I'm Alan Partridge - S1 then S2 " ... his biggest fan episode is super funny from S1 🤣🤣🤣 the writers of " Father Ted " make an appearance 😬 That should ease you into Alan 🤭👊🏼 Welcome to the party 🍻💥🤍

"Some of these people have come from Stoke" - Stoke-on-Trent, often just referred to as Stoke, is a city (pop around 250k) about 150 miles as the crow flies from Norwich (pop 150k-ish), which is the area Alan... infests. A 3-3 1/2 hour car trip, 5-6 by train, because you have to dog-leg via London. in the context of the episode, he's desperate for this to go well, because he's just set up an events company, and this is the first gig, and - having forgotten his access card, and been a dick to the staff at the country club where the event is to take place - he's just impaled his foot on a spike trying to climb over the railing. Spoiler alert: Lynn would have done a far better job than Alan is about to.

Alan Partridge, what a man! there is an ocean of content awaiting you should you wish to seek it out. The Alan Partridge character created by Steve Coogan first appereared on BBC radio in the early nineties and were very funny. Alan then found his way onto television, later in the nineties, first on 'the day today' in a minor role but then hosting his own spoof chat show called 'Knowing me, knowing you' then there was the 'I'm Alan Partridge' shows where he's living in a hotel seperated from his wife (Carol) and two children (Fernando and Denise) and this was followed by 'mid morning matters' where he's hosting a radio show on North Norfolk Digital in the early hours featuring 'sidekick Simon' his assistant. There is also an Alan Partridge film called 'Alan Partridge Alpha Papa' where a disgruntled ex employee lays siege to the Radio Station where Alan is working , it's a great film, very funny, and then more recently Alan has starred in 'This time with Alan Partridge' which is a spoof of breakfast TV, personally I didn't rate this that much, it was okay and had its moments, but no where near as funny as his earlier stuff. He's also done other stuff such as various podcasts, books and live shows, I was privilaged to have him get me on stage at a show he did in Nottingham where I live in the Uk and rip the pi $$ out of me, great stuff! Anyway, I think that just about covers it all, I'm happy to be corrected if I've made any mistakes or forgotten anything 😀

An amazingly detailed character (his narcissism alone is a source of hilarity, as is his huge ego) that Steve Coogan, the actor who created and plays him, has made into a National Treasure (even though he's not real...Alan, I mean, not Steve Coogan). His chat show (a parody of the chat show format that was big in the 90's) was epically funny. One of my favourite episodes when he met one of his fans with 2 TV producers, and the fan turned out to be a creepy stalker with an Alan Partridge tattoo on his chest, the guys living room was a strine to Alan, with pictures of Alan on every inch of the wall apart from one little bit of a corner which had David Copperfield pictures, drinking tea out of makeshift cups with only one chair to sit , the producers sneaked off leaving Alan alone with the stalker, who ended up putting Alan in a headlock when he tried to leave

Alan is a classic. I can't see many Americans really getting it. I think it helps if you understand British humour and culture first (which you clearly do). He exemplifies that middle of the road, D-list celebrity who's totally obsessed with becoming more famous and desperately sad that he isn't already (or slightly deluded at times).

Alan Partridge TV shows in order: The Day Today (Presenting Sports in a News Show) Knowing Me, Knowing You (Presenting his own TV Show) I'm Alan Partridge (Having just a small radio show and living in a travel tavern) I'm Still Alan Partridge (as above, but living in a mobile home, and wanting to get back on TV) Mid Morning Matters (Having his own Radio Show) I, Partridge: We Need to Talk About Alan (spoof memoir) Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (Movie) This Time With Alan Partridge (spoof 'magazine' show) It's not essential to see them in order but you do get a proper feel for the character by watching them like that.

I'm Alan Partridge is the funniest sitcom of all time. And there's some stiff competition with Fawlty Towers, Bottom, and many others. Every scene of every episode will make you laugh.

Alan partridge is best experienced from his origins through to his audio books and podcasts, the context really helps and it can be quite self referential. It's all absolutely golden though.

Check out the series 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' with Alan Partridge. This is a BBC Television comedy series of six episodes (beginning 16 September 1994), and a Christmas special Knowing Me, Knowing Yule on 29 December 1995. It is named after the song "Knowing Me, Knowing You" by ABBA (the main character's favourite band), a rendition of which was used as the show's title music. Steve Coogan plays the incompetent but self-satisfied Norwich-based talk show host Alan Partridge, who often insults his guests and humiliates himself in the process.
