Has anyone suggested The Fast Show with Paul Whitehouse. He plays some fantastic characters in it, such as Rowley the incoherent drunk, the "brilliant!" kid, one of the "suits you, sir" tailors, and best of all, Ted . Well worth a watch.

The Fast Show was PW's own vehicle while Harry buggered off to Sky 1. The familiar US actor you mentioned described Paul as the greatest actor in the World and appeared after requesting a cameo in the show while he was in the UK.

Definitely check out "The fast show" and "Harry Enfield and Chums" for more like this. But also I recommend "The Young Ones" and "Bottom" These two are classed as sitcoms but they're more a collection of knob gags and mindless violence. (Which is a good thing in the case of these shows as they're fecking hilarious.)

I used to love Harry Enfield, but I've hardly watched any of his stuff for years, Harry Enfield and chums was awesome, you should check out a more recent show too which Paul has made with Bob Mortimer called Gone Fishing, it's a bit more laid back and subtly funny, still comedy gold though, they've been good mates right from the early days when Bob first started performing.

The four speaking Clarksons were Harry Enfield (also midi-Clarkson/James May), Paul Whitehouse (also mini-Clarkson/Richard Hammond and the farmer), Justin Edwards and Phil Cornwell (gay Clarkson). The line about most of them ending up on Dave is a reference to the digital tv channel of that name (formerly known as UK Gold Classics) which shows a lot of repeats of BBC shows although it has an increasing amount of new content these days..

Mate Paul and Harry are legends... Paul does a "fishing" show with Bob Mortimer now. There's a story linking them altogether back in the 80's. The Fast Show was another great sketch show.

The thing with these two is that it started off years ago with Harry being the main star of the Harry Enfield show, but Paul worked alongside him for several years just not as a name in the title. Then Paul went off and did a lot of stuff on his own and working with others (The Fast Show). Then years later they got back together and shared the spotlight with this show. So if you have seen sketches like "Women know your role", it was from the Harry Enfield show, but Paul was still a big part of it.

Cool fact about these guys. Paul whitehouse and Charlie Higson (comedy partner of theirs) were painter decorators before making it big. And they were the decorators for Hugh laurie (house), stephen fry (national treasure), and emma thompson (2 time oscar winner) while they were at cambridge together

Paul Whitehouse is also one of the writers of the Fast Show, which was really popular in its days and still much loved. It's basically a bunch of fast sketches and catchphrases that get funnier the more they do them. One of my favorite sketches was Unlucky Alf, a poor widower that always has bad luck. You and your lady need to sit down and go through the Top Gear special episodes (ive said this before). There were 2 or 3 american specials if i'm not mistaken. The post hurricaine katrina one was the one you saw where they drove through the southern states from florida to new orleans. The Bolivia, Vietnam, Middle east (nativity) and Polar specials were some of the best tv ive watched. The middle east one was a lot of fun eg '3 wise men bearing gifts for baby Jesus', they drove from iraq to bethlehem. The polar special was intriguing.The vietnam one was probably still my favourite.

Dave is a repeats channel of the UKTV company that the BBC's licencing arm finally owns all the shares to. Hence buying Top Gear amongst other shows. Funnily enough, it is their partners in Britbox (ITV, formerly Independent TeleVision) that were the other shareholders to the channels.

There are a couple of aspects to Paul Whitehouse's combined writing and acting talents that few can match. Link to a horrifically cringeworthy awkward one called Middle Aged Guys 5 is at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4KrlXqXgt2trrM A complete opposite however, is the final sketch involving the character of an elderly retired lawyer called Rowley Birkin QC (Queen's Counsel) who is a rambling and largely incoherent drunk. (He's based on a real person Paul Whitehouse met on a fishing trip abroad, and couldn't understand most of what he said, which cracked him up, leading to the creation of the character.) You're not supposed to be able to follow everything - just occasional brief moments of lucidity, so don't feel awkward if you're not keeping up! The ending is very moving however, and perhaps shows the opposite (and genuine side) of the 'no holds barred' reputation of British comedy?
