Australian cuisine is a mix of every country these days .. However, Our typical cuisine of old [ up to the 1960's] was more leaning to English Cuisine, These days .. because we are so multicultural.. Australia doesn't have a specific type of food... When I was a kid in the 1950's .. Meat pies, sausage rolls, pasties, Chinese and fish and chips were the only street food / [ Takeaway] It started with the Gold Rush in the 1850's.. when people came from many countries to the gold fields .. mainly white people with a few Chinese But after the 2nd World War people from different countries such as Italy and Greece to name 2 .. bought their cuisines .to share.. Later, after the Vietnam War .. we had many Vietnamese come followed these days by Arabs, South Asians [India], Nepalese etc

Australian dishes are basically reflective of migration over the decades - that's why there is a lot of English, Italian and Greek influences traditionally but in recent decades because we are in South East Asia - the migration from all the eastern cultures heavily influences our food.

If you buy takeaway in Aus that’s from another country, usually it’s made by the people from that country who have emigrated here, so many are ridgy didge authentic. Aussie food? I was born and bred in Australia. As a child it was meat and vegetables every night, Sunday was the best lamb roast mum made every Sunday. Sweets were always made from scratch. Apples from backyard tree mum made our apple pie. Our Japanese blood plumbs mum made jam. Gee, we had a stack of fruit trees, mum made stacks of things. I remember a neighbour gave mum an Italian bolognaise recipe - omg, foreign food lol, we loved it, gradually the newer people from different countries came, we cooked it. I married had wonderful Greek and Italian neighbours, they would cook and bring food over even though I’d already cooked dinner lol. Yes huge variety of many cultures of food here in Aus. Oh I remember dad talking us to the Vic market on a Saturday to buy a huge box of vegetables when I was a child. And our treat - An American Donut. They have been there for decades as I’m now 70 🥴😥😱😂

There are over 200 languages spoken in Australia, and that translates into so many food choices it's unreal!!! Not only that, the quality is amazing. And we eat seasonally. That is, we eat what is in season, not stuff imported half way round the world. Stuff is imported, but not that much, because our food is good. Sure, there are specialties but we are pretty good here! People have a lot of pride in what they produce .
@JenMaram632 ай бұрын
Australians do not eat seasonally any more. We grow our own, export a lot, and import to keep the stocks up year round. We once did. But not any more. In the cities most fruit and vegetables in some variety is available year round. Prices are high when off season.

A traditional Australian food that is not so common these days unless you are a farm worker in the outback or maybe it’s a fun thing to cook on a camping trip, is ‘damper’. Some traditional Aussie food from the very olden days would be roast beef, pork or chicken dinners. Beef, steak and mushroom, chicken and veggie pies. Fish and chips or seafood basket or seafood platter. Family barbecues lamb chops mashed potatoes peas and gravy. Theres a lot of food and recipes that are uniquely Aussie but I won't list them all. Heavy british influence becuase most aussie families that arent native were all british families who sailed to Australia.

Adelaide's history grew with the Greek version "Yiros", there are not many places where it's called kebab and the sliced minced meat version is uncommon (which I'm thankful for because I don't really like it). Our yiros is usually filled with marinated vertical rotisserie lamb, chicken and occasionally pork or skewered and cooked over coals version that js usually bigger chunked and more juicy. Tomato, raw onion and tabouleh with garlic tzatziki and souvlaki sauce is my fave combination but sometimes tabouleh isn't available so I have no choice but to use lettuce.

Pâté is a French terrine of meat and spices that’s been cooked and chilled to set into a rich, smooth spread or a rustic more textured spread. Best way to describe the taste is… imagine if meat were a butter. Usually made from chicken livers. Tho you’d never know it to taste. Sometimes duck or salmon but personally I think the traditional chicken one is the best. People tend to be turned off when they find out what it is but it’s one of those things you definitely have to give a shot because it’s awesome and not at all what you’re expecting. Fresh warm toast generously buttered then spread with pâté is magic comfort food at its best. Hope you come across it one day and get to give it a shot 😁 or maybe make it yourself, it’s pretty easy.
