Cows are sacred and wander freely (even sleeping in the middle of the freeways).

Definitely go and visit India it's a fascinating country. I've been twice, once in 1986 backpacking the again in 2019( rather more upmarket ), the changes to the country were phenomenal. Not least the Taj Mahal, back in 86 we arrived before dawn, the ticket office was closed but the gates open, we just walked in and had the place to ourselves watching the Taj changing colour as the Sun rose. Now it's heavily protected with even airport security to get in. I'm going back again this year, love the country so much.

Another thing that they managed to get completely wrong was that Freddie Mercury was born on 5th September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar and NOT in Tanzania - that happened in December 1961 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined to become one country therefore it would've been impossible for Freddie to have been born in Tanzania 15 years before it even existed, wouldn't it? :-/

I was lucky enough to win a prize competition back in early 90's. Accompanied by my mother, we were VIP guests of the Gov. of India Tourist Board. So, we flew to Delhi, took the train to Agra to visit Taj Mahal ('Mumtaj's Palace') and from there had use of a private car and driver to visit Jhansi & the red Fort at Gwalior. Absolutely spot-on about the vegetarian/vegan food available - The Hindu religion treat the cow as sacred as it provides so much. I was so lucky. I'm also fortunate to work with many Indian people in the office in Cardiff. One of the big Indian IT companies provides us with consultants and for Diwali the young men and women put on a music & dance event, a quiz and, of course, loads of lovely Indian food. Also, don't forget, ~400M people in India have the same standard of living as, say, the EU countries and a very high standard of Scientific, Engineering and Mathematical skills and a space programme. Truly a wonderful country - one also, only one timezone. 🙂

India is an amazing country go there. I also love how India influences UK and especially London
@OblivionGate2 жыл бұрын
The only influence India had on the UK is curry, which Britain invented because during Britain's 200 year colonisation on India there was no refridgeration so adding spices to meat helped to preserve it. It's Great Britain that influenced India, not the other way around. Indian people come to live in Britain for a better quality of life, not the other way around. What are you talking about, you need to learn some facts and history.
@douglasbrown56922 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel, I think focussing on India is a great idea. It's an endlessly fascinating country - especially if you dive below the superficial touristy stuff. Of course it's not Disneyland - there's extreme poverty, the "caste" system is alive and well (despite denials), misoginy is ingrained in most Indian religions and national and local politics is utterly corrupt. But that (and more) aside, the people are absolutely lovely, the many cultures are complex and intriguing, and the different styles of local cuisines will have you salivating. I'd highly recommend you watch a documentary called "Writing with Fire" about a small news organisation run by women from the lowest caste - the Dalit (aka "the untouchables"). It would give you a more realistic view of real Indian society.
@nid-jk2vx2 жыл бұрын
FYI untouchability is abolished! The caste system is no different than racism that’s prevalent in your country.I just don’t understand why people can’t talk about India without bringing up the caste system. It’s like reducing the entire west to just racism and slavery. The president of India is a Dalit! The caste system is not a representation of the Indian society.Your comment is so prejudiced and stereotypical.
@nid-jk2vx2 жыл бұрын
@Cluain The fact that you think modi is the president shows how little you know about india. He’s our prime minister, genius. And I don’t have to learn about my country from a random dude who believes everything he reads in fictional books. FYI arundhati roy is a disgrace to humankind. She literally supported a genocide against Kashmiri people. So don’t you dare educate me about my own country.
@douglasbrown56922 жыл бұрын
nid 2000 "untouchability is abolished"?? Nope. Just because caste discrimination was made illegal over 70 years ago, doesn't mean the jati ceased to exist - so perhaps your anger is born of embarrassment at its' stubborn continuity. The jati are alive and well, and everyone knows it. Or maybe you live on Malabar hill with the blinds permanently drawn. You cannot "abolish" the way people think, what they believe or how they treat each other. Presumably, you're BJP. How many years ago did Modi promise toilets for everyone? But go to the Dalit area and of course their homes don't have toilets. Yes, the jati/varna don't fully represent Indian society (I never said they did), but unfortunately they do remain a very significant influence on social, political, and economic structures in much of the country. And by the way, racism isn't particularly prevalent in my country (which you presume to know).
@nid-jk2vx2 жыл бұрын
@@douglasbrown5692 that some bs you’ve come up with. You accuse me of making presumptions about your country while you’re doing the exact same thing. Why do you feel like you can educate me about a country I have lived in my whole life? Have you actually visited rural India or do you watch BBC? That just goes to show how arrogant you are. Untouchability is abolished by law! If you want to talk about how abolishing it doesn’t change the way people think then is it safe to say that black people are still considered slaves by white people? Racism and caste discrimination are the same. I don’t bring in racism every time I speak of the west. Your comment reduces india into a country that is recognized only by the caste system. I must appreciate the confidence with which you make ill-informed comments. Maybe just accept that you’re ignorant and educate yourself. That would really make you a better person. www.refworld.org/docid/3ae6b57c0.html. Do go through it and feel free to shut up.

Yes knew Freddie was of Parsee descent. India is on my bucket list too, though it is a big place probably requiring multiple trips to know well. Indeed a planned trip there ended up as three months backpacking in China, an experience in itself. Cows are sacred to Hindus, so no beef and leather comes from water buffalo. And if I had to choose one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, it would be Indian. Made potato and mushroom curry and green lentils with spinach, from Madhur Jaffrey's cookbook, only last night. India may be a very interesting country to visit but India is also one of the most poluted countries due to it's very large and dense population and India's land area being much smaller than China's (which if course is a country with a very similar population size). This means that just a single day in Dheli today would likely be the equivelent to skoking at least 20 cigarettes alone. It is also confirmed that nearly 1.7 million people in India ended up dying in 2019 due to air pollution and 9 out of the 10 most polluted cities are also located in India. So a face mask would be very wise while visiting if you do not want to risk damaging your lungs at all.

Go next to your hometown. What do you like about it, how it influenced you and how you initially choose to focus on England. I think you should branch out to the world based on the English Commonwealth, since you initially began exploring the world through England. Maybe a focus on other European countries would be a rich vein to mine as well. Thanks for the great videos.

Hey, running-man - not born in India, but spent the first few years of my life in Sri Lanka. (It's the small tear-shaped island at the bottom of India & there are heaps of vids. about it. Hint, hint.)). There's a saying attributed to the Jesuits: "Give me a child until they are 7 years old and they're mine for life.". Which is why, I think, I tend to stand out like a sore thumb in England where black, grey & Navy Blue are the predominant clothing colours! My earliest memories are of elephants being scrubbed by their mahouts in the river at the end of the day; of men sitting in the dust playing flutes to make snakes come out of their baskets, and of my lovely 'Aunties' (older Indian women who rule kids with a rod of iron - and much love.. It's also probably why many of the vids. on England - apart from the history ones - taught me as much as they did you; & definitely why I'm totally lost when it comes to English food and dunking bikkies into tea etc! Next to actual English food, the predominance of Indian food in England is notable - although they tend to go much easier on the spices here. (We've learnt that if you order & then explain "Uh, we're not from England" they'll make it the traditional way). It's also part of the reason we (my family & I) cook a lot in the Indian way. Btw. The English language owes a lot to India, words like khaki (not kackee - carkey) verandah, pyjamas, shampoo, jungle, karma, avatar...(bet that one's a surprise?)...and many 'ordinary' English words. Something you may not know is that Bollywood (Indian film industry) waay outdoes Hollywood on the production side - they put out about 1,000 films annually!!

Interesting, so cool that you were around elephants. Sad to see them taken advantage of so much these days :(

@@ItsJps Yeah it certainly is - but don't forget it's only the atrocities which hit the news, not those which are loved and respected. Elephants have always been my favourites...did you those poor elephant-gals are pregnant for 22 months!! 22 months of swollen ankles and heartburn and chundering! All respect!!
