Possibly the biggest thing this video missed mentioning is the ANZAC history. In WW1 The Australian and New Zealand Army Corp was formed to fight in the war. ANZAC Day is one of the most respected Days in the Aussie calendar as we remember all who served in our Military. Australia and New Zealand are like Cousins who grew up with each other. Also Aus has the 5th longest mountain range on the planet- The Great Dividing Range which runs from Victoria up through NSW and deep into the North of Qld, it runs along inland of the eastern seaboard and hooks west in Vic. It is the longest range that is within 1 single country, it's abut 800 miles shorter than the Rocky Mountain Range in the U.S and Canada

Personally, I’m still peeved at the kiwis for accidentally pulling the guard detail off the maleme airfield on Crete. Aussie forces on Crete had just finished inflicting 100% casualties on German paratroopers in the Aussie sectors and were sitting around having a well earned smoko when some kiwis turn up and go "uh, look, bros, we accidentally told the detail on the airfield to leave and by the time we figured out that was a mistake the Nazis were landing reinforcements. So any time soon nazi tanks are going to be turning up here. We, uh, think it might be time for everyone to go". (Add the uptick at the end). I am, however, a big fan of Colonel Malone and his Wellington Rifles. He’s the guy who famously cleaned up Quinn’s Post and had plans to plant a small garden up the back (Thats what he told his wife in a letter, anyway). Sadly, the formidable Colonel Malone was killed by a British naval bombardment on chunuk bair during the hard fought august 1915 offensive.

@@tileux don’t forget that on Crete the Māori battalion took on a force that was 10 to 1 if not more with the most amount of losses on Crete and it was miss communication from the British generals and the lack of air support from the from the RAF so really Crete was a mess made by the British like the Dardanelles campaign
@tileux
@tileux 2 жыл бұрын
@@samyorke4636 No mate, it wasnt. First off the general in command on Crete was Freyberg VC - a new zealander. And his staff were new zealanders. Second, the german paratroops had been defeated comprehensively at every landing area - except Maleme Airfield. And it was a flat out screw up by the New Zealand officers there that gifted the airfield to the surviving german paratroopers there and allowed them to flood in reinforcements, including tanks. If Maleme airfield had not been lost Crete would never have been taken. German high command only allowed operation mercury as a bit of a gift to the luftwaffe parachute commanders, who had to lobby hard to be allowed to do it. German high command was appalled by the casualties and Hitler was furious. The germans would never have reinforced the attack on crete if the airfield hadnt been captured. The loss of Crete was absolutely the result of New Zealand officers incompetence. It doesnt give me any pleasure to say that but thats the facts. Freyberg himself was a dolt, even though he won a VC at Gallipoli (for the weird act of swimming around placing the landing marker buoys). For what its worth quite a lot of the woes caused at ANZAC were the result of officers like the new zealander Godley and the Australians Hughes and Antell, as well as Birdwood. While British management of Gallipoli was appalling so was the work of most of the ANZAC officers above the rank of colonel, with exceptions like Walker and Bridges - Monash was average at Gallipoli. Australian officers who were superstars in France later - like "Pompey" Elliot - were often colonel rank or below at Gallipoli. The Kiwis would definitely have benefited from not fighting as part of british divisions for most of 2 world wars.

As someone who emigrated to Australia, I can tell you it's not 'easy'. Many trees died to provide the necessary paperwork, much money expended, and time spent on learning what I needed to know to establish myself successfully here. Permanent residency is what you need if you want to stay, otherwise there are lots of different kinds of visas for shorter term stays. It was totally worth every difficulty, every cent and every sleepless night. Yes, OK, books are expensive, food isn't dirt cheap and travel is always going to be more pricey because, well, distance, but oh, the compensations...

I am what I feel as a person is an AusNZ, moved from NZ to Aus a few years ago now. I was entertained watching this react, I just feel that I need to clarify, as far as what was pertained to music from NZ was concerned ... sure, NZ has had Lourdes out of NZ, but there has also been the Finn brothers, from Crowded House & Split Enz, come from Te Awamutu, only minutes from where I grew up & Jon Stevens, who still entertains on a big scale even today. Aus claims a lot of NZ talent as there own because Aus has more opportunity for artists, etc, to be able to make their way. The likes of Peter Jackson, Lord of The Rings, etc, I guess is creating more of a pathway for NZ talent hopefully, instead of using Aus (actors and musicians alike) as a gateway /opportunity to their success. The tallest peak in Australian claimed territory is over 11,000 feet tall. This depends on whether or not you count the Antarctic Territory. Mawson Peak is over 9000 feet, and Australian responsibility for that is not up for debate. Even ignoring these external islands and territories Australia still gets a fair bit of snow. Australia has a LOT of mountains over 5000 feet tall, from South West Tasmania to Far North Queensland, and snow falls in every mainland state and territory as well as Tasmania. Snow falling in the Northern Territory and Queensland is not an annual winter seasonal event, but happens every few years, so it isn't THAT rare.

It's meaningless. If the US whistled and told Australia to ignore andinvasion of NZ by China, you can guarantee that Australia would close it's borders to NZ refugees and throw NZers living in Australia into concentration camps, just to be sure that the US understood that Australia COMPLETELY understands what the US wanted it to do. The ANZAC is a historical colonial artifact of the WW1 era. NZ has no global political power and no economic value. Australia would happily sell us up the river if the US demanded it.

Yep cost of living is plain wrong. Fuel way more expensive, groceries a little more (and deli type products same price but not as good - in the supermarket). Housing is bonkers more expensive in NZ too, I would say 25-40% more expensive for a similar property in a similar demographic area. Pretty weird considering the wages are about 25% lower on average and if your mahi (work) is portable to Australia, the exchange rate is a real blessing. That said, NZ is a better place to work and live in my opinion, but it wouldn't work for everyone.

No, that’s correct. Australian soil _on average_ is garbage. It’s just that there is a LOT of it. So even if only a tiny proportion of land is suitable for farming crops, it still allows production of far more food than could ever be eaten by the population, so farming for export does well all the same.

When i was in NZ my parents came for a visit from WA. First thing my Dad said was ‘Geez God must’ve been angry when he made NZ’ wasn’t meant in a bad way just the mountains and windy roads etc. He loved NZ. It is stunning. Hobbiton is in Matamata in the North Island. I was in NZ near Whakatane a couple of years back when Whakaari (White Island) exploded. NZ is fairly volcanic but Australia has no volcanoes. I was born in England, lived in Holland and Kuwait as a kid. Came to WA at 14 spent the majority of my adult life in WA but also a few years in NZ. Mate Australia does have volcanoes, and active ones too (in that they are not classed as dead). There is a caldera not far south of the blue lakes of Mt Gambier in South Australia (which are prior vent sites) that is an active volcano. It just hasn't expressed itself in a bloody long time. Vulcanoligists suggest that if it did let go, well it would some very, VERY serious damage. There are another one or two dormant volcanoes in the state of Victoria... again, dormant is the key word.

As an Aussie I will always stick up for our Kiwi brother or sisters, unless it is the cricket or footy. No one puts crap on them. When "it" hits the fan you will generally find that both countries will try to help each other out. We get bush fires, NZ get earthquakes. Both can be devastating and help from volunteers fly both ways many times. Most Aussies treat Kiwis as if they were from just another state, not another country. Some of the best Aussie bands are actually made up from Kiwis, like Split Enz becoming Crowded House. Another great band was Dragon, who moved to Sydney to try to break into the music scene, maybe the NZ music scene at the time wasn't enough to go straight to the US or the UK, but hey were welcomed in Aus with open arms and wallets for their music.

AUS is geologically VERY old, hence our mountains have mainly been eroded to rounded hills. NZ is geologically quite young, hence the alpine vistas. Auckland is about the same latitude as Sydney, and there is a lot of NZ south of there. Kiwis come to AUS for the higher wages, lifestyle and other factors being about the same. Except for Kiwis, there is a points system to emigrate to AUS. It helps a lot if you are young, married with a couple of kids, with a skill which is in demand. So, if you qualify, it is easy to emigrate. If you do not, Sorry, no way! Haka simply means song, and there are different hakas for different situations. The wedding haka Ian watched is not a patch on a full on the sporting haka which is an adaptation of a war haka. A Kiwi will tell you the haka is a welcome. Don't believe it! The sporting haka basically says "I see you. If you come any closer, I am going to rip you apart". There is even a throat slitting gesture to back it up. Overall, Kiwis are good people, and good friends. The only thing wrong with Kiwis is that they do not let us win the Rugby. Ever! It is just not fair! Crowded House were formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985. Its founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn and Australians Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. Later band members included Neil Finn's brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod. So perhaps cannot be claimed as NZ band.

Australia is a continent because it sits on a continental shelf. In primary school we learned that it was also the world's largest island. Don't know what they teach these days. NZ does have beautiful mountains! I once stayed with a friend in the capital Wellington. Driving just 20 min or so out of the city, we saw the most incredible vistas around every bend. The flipside is that they have a shirtload of earthquakes 😱 As for accents, the main difference lies in vowel pronunciation, like the narrator says. While we say ten, Kiwis say tin. We say six, they say sux. We say chips, they say chups ... and so on.

That's the second time this summer we have had a mass of tropical air move south into Central Australia, and then east. In NSW, we were warned that this wasn't going to be a typical Summer, at least for Dec and Jan. So far, no strong Southerly Changes (traditionally known as Southerly Busters), with accompanying storms, to lower temperatures and drive away the humidity. Although we have also missed out on the really high temps as well. Not complaining about that.

The reason NZ is growing faster than Australia is thanks to the last GOVT who thought it a great idea to open the borders and let in a whole load of cheap labour. They were a conservative GOVT only interested in boosting business by keeping wages down. Thank goodness they were voted out and immigration was re assessed. But too late. Thanks to the huge boost in population there isn't enough housing and Kiwis who were born here can't ever imagine being able to afford to own their own home. Australia were smart. They clamped down on immigration and banned non Aussies from buying homes. As a result in Australia homes are homes. In New Zealand they have become comodities to buy and sell for tax free profit.
@alanbrooke144

Sounds quite reasonable, however NZ’s immigration settings have not substantially changed regardless of which party was in government. Also if you think Australian house price inflation of over 25% pa, with average house prices of A$1.6 million as ‘homes’ and not a commodity, then you really are delusional.
@michaelcrane2475

@@alanbrooke144 Our immigration policy has changed significantly. The last GOVT let anyone come in on a student visa use it as a way in. They would do a five minute business course then be able to stay here and work at a gas station, supermarket or some other low paid job. This GOVT stopped that and as a result, wages have started to rise again for the KIwis who used to be able to survive on those jobs ten years ago. Kiwis trying to raise a family need to earn more to survive than an imigrant sharing rent with 10 other people in a cramped rental. As for Australian house prices.... I know a lot of Kiwis buying homes in Queensland because they just can't afford even the deposit to buy a home in NZ. So who is delusional???

Theres 2 huge advantages NZ has over Australia and both have to do with pension eligibility. When u get to a pension age in NZ u get the pension no questions asked. Whether you're a pauper or wealthy u get it. In Australia they have tightened eligibility so bad even the value of your home can affect your pension even though it provides no income. Considering the cost of housing has skyrocketed the last few decades this is bad news for people approaching pension age. Secondly if youre on a pension in Australia and u want to continue working in some capacity to supplement youre income this will automatically affect your pension. Not so in NZ. Pensioners can work without affecting their pension. The NZ govt justifies this because well.. if a pensioner works they continue paying taxes so its a win win.

The reason we don't have high mountain ranges in Australia is the EXTREME age of the land itself. We had massive mountain ranges in the distant past, such as the McDonnell Ranges and the Peterman Ranges, both of which would have rivalled any range today for the height of its peaks. But they have all been weathered down to nothing by vast ages of time and erosion. Uluru and the Olgas were both created by silt runoff from the Peterman range into a long gone inland sea. Both of these ranges were long gone by the time dinosaurs were around, from 250 to 65 million years ago. They were around from 1.2 billion years ago to 650 million years ago. As the Australian plate has not collided with another plate for hundreds of millions of years (like the Indian sub continent did to form the Himalayas), there ahs been no mountain building here for a VERY long time.

@@richardmiller3839 It depends on the timeline Louis is referring to - but "once" covers a long period of time. There are certainly very thick sedimentary layers that show a lot of erosion, folding and faulting has occurred over a long period of time. Uluru is a good example of that. And of course, Australia isn't currently near a plate boundary, so our mountains are eroding, not growing. Given what we know, "never" is a big statement. With the exception of volcanoes, the last major mountain building probably occurred when Australia, Africa and Antarctica were one - Gondwanaland. So well over 200 million years ago. The MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia were originally twice as high as Mount Kosciuszko. So maybe unlikely, not provable? But enough with the "delusional", keep it friendly.

Hello IWrocker, Enjoy your videos and your interest in my country Australia. You must come sometime. Maybe some promotions company will send you free tickets and you do videos in Oz. In your video you mention Australian band AC/DC, don’t forget the BeeGees. Although born in England they came here as very young boys and grew up here starting their musical career here. Did you know the Black Box in planes is an Australian invention? Also QANTAS is the oldest commercial airline in the world and has the safest record. Not to mention John Travolta is a QANTAS pilot!!!! True. May do a video on his love of QANTAS. Anyway look forward to your next video. Regards and well wishes to you and your family. Jared

I'm not sure about the US Canada relationship, but in Oceania we are like a family. Australia is the oldest, bossy, irritating to the younger siblings, but has all the right connections - and mostly has your back. New Zealand is like the second oldest. Not bossy, a mediator. Uses their smarts to gain influence rather than muscle, and treats everyone with respect. Loved by all, and always ready to show up the oldest with skill and finesse. I can't speak for every Aussie, but I love my Kiwi brothers and sisters. I have a helluva lot of respect for how they go about things. A beautiful country filled with beautiful people. If Zealandia and Sahul were still above the water line this area of the world would be the dominating powerhouse of the globe. Crowded House/Split Ends - great NZ frontmen.

No need to apologise about like NZ's mountains more, we know theirs are bigger. I worked at a ski resort in Australia once, the same year I was offered a job at an NZ ski resort. I wish I went to NZ, we ended up with the worst snow season on record, NZ was digging out chair lifts on a daily basis... The cost of living in NZ isn't a huge amount lower than Australia, but you get paid a fair bit more for doing the same job in Australia. The "similar median income" is incorrect. As a chef, I'd get paid $15K less in NZ for doing the same job. Australia is easy to migrate to if you can speak English, and you do a job that's in demand. Crowded House is the only NZ band worth mentioning... even though it's half made up of Aussie band members lol.

personally i think its both, i think of us as an island nation in the sense that we dont share our landmass with any other country and therefore have a society and mentality that i would imagine is the same as countries that occupy proper islands. Our island is just big enough to be considered a continent in the geographic sense, in an economic and social sense i think we are an "island nation"

I found this below. Apparently we aren’t an island, until someone else says we are lol ••At about 3 million square miles (7.7 million square km), Australia is the smallest continent on Earth. ... According to Britannica, an island is a mass of land that is both “entirely surrounded by water” and also “smaller than a continent.” By that definition, Australia can't be an island because it's already a continent.••

New Zealand may have mountains but we have the bungle bungles. New Zealand cant match that. And shark bay... New Zealand is growing faster because its easier to emigrate to New Zealand - then go to Australia... Emigration to Australia is pretty easy as long as youre employable and have some sort of qualifications - or you can claim to be a barista - no joking, that used to be on the list of special occupations we had a shortage of. If you have a qualification that we're short of you get extra points that make it easier to get in. Right now if youre an accountant then you can pretty much just walk in the door, subject to covid slowing everything down. The criteria for emigrating to New Zealand are a lot looser. That frequently pisses off conservative Australian federal governments, who regard the Kiwi's more generous immigration system as a dastardly plot by Kiwis to flood our country with refugees disguised as Kiwis. A redback spider will make an adult sick but wont kill them (unless you have some kind of underlying condition). The difference in accents is that the Kiwi accent is bloody awful. Thats an easy one. Also, most people who arent Saffers or Australians think Kiwis are Saffers when they hear them - which shows how awful the kiwi accent is. Having an argument with a 7 foot, 150 kg, Maori is always a bit easier than you'd expect because Kiwis generally sound like placid 5 year olds who just found their dad's bong... We have more camels than the rest of the world put together. Occasionally a herd of wild camels will saddle up (not literally) and raid an outback town and cause a bit of mayhem. Usually they target water supplies and the Pub (okay, Im joking about the Pub, although, with Aussie camels, Im sure theyve probably done that). We used to export our camels to the middle east because they are the best camels for camel racing (which is very popular in the Middle East) but I think that trade got stopped because camel racing jockeys in the middle east are young boys and eventually some bright spark finally realised the sport is systemised child abuse. Now theyre experimenting with robot camel jockeys (and, again, Im not making that up!). Fun fact: there used to be a company based at Eastern Creek in Sydney that was in the business of cutting range rovers in half and lengthening them. The work was commission work for rich arabs who need the extra length to fit their falcon cages in (no-one makes any model of car specifically for falconers - go figure). Not making that up either. Once I saw a lengthened range rover with a SOLID GOLD customised gun rack in it - you could fit your AK 74 (or whatever it was) straight into the outline slot made for it. That range rover was probable worth a couple of million just because of all the gold in it. New Zealand bands - split enz, crowded house (actually, on reflection, thats really the same band, but Im sticking up for our Kiwi cousins here). Also, Russell Crowe is a Kiwi/an Aussie. Discuss. I'll be back in 10 hours when that debate is over...

On the band thing, there are great kiwi bands out there, they have been let down by bad marketing to the global population. This is why most move abroad and join other bands. Our small population, combined with so many genres, makes this a no-brainer for many musicians, so they move abroad for a bigger target audience. Google best NZ bands of all time, they will not disappoint- cheers from NZ!
