UK - Just retired, 20 years in most recent job where I received 7 and a half weeks hol (plus public holidays - 9? days) The US working conditions look to be similar to those here in late Victorian times 150 years ago.

In Germany when we become sick during our holidays we get our vacation days back (with doctors note) because vacation days are there for relaxing/recharging but being ill is the oposite of relaxing 😅

Oh yeah sure, except unions are suppressed like crazy in the US. Even where technically the law would be in favour of unions, corporations go out of their way to advertise against unionisation which somehow isn't illegal.

Had a friend who was a lawyer in a big London firm. He was given a fees target each year and once he met that he could take the rest of the year off. He earned a phenomenal amount and spent a lot of time travelling the world as a very keen birdwatcher. Of course when not on leave he worked insane hours but the leave he accrued was well worth it.

Here in the UK, you even get up to 12 months maternity pay, plus you still get the annual leave (PTO) and bank holidays (federal days) from that year plus all the holidays when you go back to work. In my company, the average person coming back from one year of maternity leave will have about 70 days of annual leave to take (compared to the rest of the staff who will have 27 days). We also don't have use all of our holidays by the end of the year. In my company, we can carry up to 5 days of holiday forward to the next year. The video is slightly out of date as we now have something called shared parental leave. So the mother and father can share the time off between them (so mum can take the first 25 weeks and dad takes the second 25 weeks, or mum can take 40 weeks and dad can take 10 weeks, or they can both take 25 weeks off together, or whatever, so long as it adds up to 50 weeks). Mum is still required by law to take two weeks maternity leave.

You don't get 12 months maternity pay. It's 52 weeks maternity leave. Maternity pay is 90% of average weekly earnings for 6 weeks. The next 33 weeks are 90% of earnings or £156.66 per week whichever is lower. The final 13 weeks are unpaid. If the Mother works in a factory. The time increases to being Illegal for her to return to work less than 4 weeks after giving birth. Fathers get 2 weeks paternity leave in addition to being able to share mother's maternity leave.

In the case of the "unlimited Payed holidays", the key to not "forget" is to plan your holidays in the beginning of the year. One just has to say "This year Im going to take 30 days holidays" and plan the dates you are going to leave. Schedule flights, hotels, rentals, etc. then when the time comes you have no option but to go on holidays.

The culture of turning up sick has changed in the UK. When I was young I always went to work even if I had the flu or whatever. Now it's a more supportive environment. Sickness absences have increased as sick pay has increased. But the people who take advantage are the price we pay for fairness for people who are genuinely sick. Most companies have a sickness management process where employees get warnings once they reach a certain level of absence, due to the cost and impact on colleagues etc. Not for the odd day though as its understood that humans get sick sometimes and have to recover...

Only be off sick if going to see the GP that same day to get a docs note. Despite that, Next time I'm sick after being off twice even with Doc notes declaring me unfit for work twice last 12 months, and was told next time I am, even with a note, I am to be in trouble and have a disciplinary action meeting for being off sick! I can understand the reasons why companies do this because people can be taking advantage, but both times I had a freaking note from the doctor!!!!! Why should I be penalised?

There is a vast loophole in the UK - 'zero hour contracts'. No guaranteed pay whatsoever because you have no promise of paid work. You're not really an employee because you're not even part-time. Thus if you were ill or something happened and could not work - most likely you'd be effectively fired by being starved of paid hours. Sometimes employers could eliminate you that way just because they did not like you - as you're not being 'fired', they don't have to justify it. At one point I was easily working around 30+ hours per week and desperately accepting the most brutal and unpleasant jobs imaginable to survive - only to have a single complaint lodged against me (I was deemed "too stiff") and suddenly no hours and no money - thus totally ruined. Its an evil practice that governments have repeatedly promised to ban but never do (while mysteriously corporate money is showered upon political parties).

My company in the UK gives 52 weeks (max) paternity pay of which 26 weeks is at full basic pay! (On the downside, I am too old and ugly to find myself in the position of being a new father. One the upside, I am spared 6 months at home with a screaming baby!)

Only a few days ago I was watching a nice couple that do the same as yourself on KZbin and they were watching about health care in Uk Vs US and she mentioned how on her middle child they said it would have to be C-section so a lot of money. But her water broke while in theatre before they started and she had them natural…… so the bastards only went and charged them for both a C-section and a natural birth cost $58,000….. that’s just wrong 😑🧛🏻‍♂️

I could buy the doctors justification of those prices but what I cannot buy is the 40 dollars they charge for you to have skin on skin contact with your baby. I know its only 40 dollars and in comparison that's nothing but the fact that they charge for that sickens me.

In the UK you can have full pay for 6 months max per year, after that it's statuary sick pay for the time there after. We also get maternity pay and you can take a year off after you've had your child. If you take paid annual leave ( holiday paid leave) of 6 weeks, if you happen to get ill you can phone into work and you'll get your annual leave days back and be paid sick pay in full.

I'm in Brisbane Australia, I have been working myjob for 11yrs now with the same boss, while I rarely get sick I have had to take some time off, and I have sick pay with my job. In my situation, where I work on salary, I build up 4hrs a fornight for sick only, to be used when I need. Right now, today (just looked at my pay slip lol), I could take almost 5mths off at full pay being sick, before my sick ours are depleted. I also have holidays, and as I have worked 10 years with the company, I also had an extra 8weeks of pay for long service leave (which all jobs are entitled to this, based on your regular hours/income) to be either paid out or taken as holidays. I did both lol. I know I am lucky

Just at the end he touched upon what I was thinking about "Unions" the UK has lots of Unions, in the 19th century they fought long and hard for workers rights even into the middle of the 20th century, all out strikes and other Unions coming out in sympathy soon sorted out the greedy bosses. So what is stopping Americans catching up with the rest of the world?

dude, where I leave, it's a norm to consider our system one of the worst in the world, social benefits deminish every year, minimum wage is laughable, mortgage is growing... but wtf did I just hear? I never even considered our state enforced 3-year fully-paid maternity leave that big of a deal before... a month of paid leave, unlimited amount of sick leaves w doctor's note, which is given for free... We're still in somewhat of a shithole tbh, but I do hope our dictators won't "copy the USs homework".

Over a decade ago we opted for a four day week, 9•5hrs a day, but it means every public holiday is a four day weekend, translation, late flights in and out equaled a four day European city break. Have watched quite a lot of Evan so would point out that He talks about England, where He lives. I'm in Scotland, it's different, every newborn gets a babybox, google it, there's a supplementary weekly payment for every child, universal free prescriptions and all other healthcare is more subsidised. Have worked with a lot of americans over the last forty years and the trigger is normally, the fast food corporation that has to pay a pittance with no benefits just to stay in business in the USA. Just look at the T&.C's they meet in Scandinavia and Europe, and rather than collapsing, they expand! Please don't believe Me, You can find infinite videos on yt highlighting the con before looking further afield.

Might I suggest, this wasn't USA vs UK rights bcos you poor US citizens don't actually have any! So nothing to compare with! Sorry, I'm being a little bit sarcastic, I really feel for you guys 😋 I believe that the 52 weeks is now interchangeable between maternal/paternal leave. Keep well 💖🇬🇧🇺🇲🙋‍♀️
