The Ford XY GTHO Phase 3 had a top speed of 142 mph and Phase 4 had a top speed of 150 mph. At the time the Ford XY GTHO Phase 3 was in production it was the world's fastest four-door production car, a true beast of a car.

I read an article years ago by someone who was in the industry and he claimed the Phase III would approach 160 m.p.h with a particular gearing set up. The Cleveland 351 engine was, and still is I believe, an amazing piece of technology, especially considering the era!

Bear in mind, the XY GTHO was built by Ford at the time with pretty much the sole purpose, of winning the endurance race at this track. So even if it starts at the very back of a mixed bag of 'old cars', you would friggin hope it gets to near the front in 3 laps! Particularly, Conrod Straight is quite long, and the GTHOs could reach (from memory) about 160mph/ 250kmh (before the huge chicane was added 2/3 the way down); way more than the top speed of most of the field. The GTHO falcon was the coolest car ever made in Oz. The track itself is phenomenal. I have recently ridden a bike up the first hill, as part of a 100km ride in the area. Man, it is soooo steep. The corners on the way back down are, also, much steeper than you would think from the video.

The mountain is a lot tamer now than it was back in the day. “The Dipper”was real where your car would be on the right hand wheels only but being a public road the Bathurst Council has filled it in over the years. Conrod straight was dead straight from Forrest elbow down to Murrys Corner. There was 3 hills coming down Conrod where the car would get extremely light and a good breeze would push you across to the other side of the road. Then you would come into Murrys Corner trying to turn left with your brakes on fire and engine over reving while shifting down. No such thing as ABS or stability control back then.

Which is why the poor Valiant was amazing up the mountain, but on the long straights it was easy to overtake so they had to drive defensively. This was in the early 60's. I remember getting to that corner and calling out to him and he was hanging upside down in his harness and he must have heard me yelling as he turned his head toward me with the biggest grin that was like "look what daddy can do." Search the history of charger racing in Aus and NZ. Here in Aus they were leading the last Bathurst they competed in, went into the pits to change tyres and refuel, the pit crew threw the wheel nuts aside to replace with fresh ones, but couldn't get them onto the studs which had expanded with heat. Scavenging for the old thrown aside nuts cost them too much time and they lost their lead and failed to finish 1st and maybe even in top 3? (Someone can correct me). So they failed to gain legendary status here in Aus. In NZ however... Allan Moffat took his Phase 3 GTHO with air filter mounted "Shaker" scoop, to NZ for their series figuring that the 265 Hemi straight six Chargers might have a weight advantage and be able to corner faster, but his 351 Cleveland V8 Falcon could take them in the straights. He was wrong and he pulled out of the series after 1 or 2 races and went home to Aus with his tail between his legs. Hence the Crysler Charger achieved legendary status in NZ.

Like Touring Car Masters, these older car classes are mainly driven by 'gentleman' drivers, and there's a number of unofficial agreements between drivers not to race too hard so as to avoid crashing rare cars. Conrod straight, (Bathurst in general) it's the only track in Aus where we run an over-drive top gear, otherwise the thing will bounce off the rev limiter. By the time I had my 5th one, it was running a 289 out of a Mustang, a Fairlane front and a GT interior. By this time it was practically a show car and would smoke most contenders at the lights. My first car was a XW, my second a XY. My third was a XA auto with many of the considerable number of 'phase'' options available at the time ticked, traction lock diff, full Girlock brake package, factory auto shift valving, etc. The handling improvements from the XW to the XA cannot be over emphasised. The way my and other XW/XY cars I have driven can step out and bite you hard when you push them to their limits compared to the XA,B,C series cars is astonishing. Literally every year the Oz manufacturers were building substantially faster and quicker cars from the year before - the political hysteria over the Phase 4 was enough to effectively panic politicians into legislating these fully race spec cars off the road... The brake pads on my XA were immense, easily three times bigger again than the stock brakes of the time - I used to have to get the pads and shoes re-manufactured as they were not kept on the shelf in my local Ford dealer. Best brakes I've ever had on a car though - as you want in a car capable of easily getting up to 215km/h when I had it... Amazing, if brutal cars to drive that quickly sort out the gifted drivers from the rest of us, when fully sorted out they are the type of car that rewards the good driver well but man they can spit you into the undergrowth so fast if you stuff it up. I was lucky to drive a couple of fast cars back when they were still a car the regular bloke could own. Pretty safe to say that the car we are watching in this vid is faster, with better brakes and definitely a much better engine (in terms of reliability) than the original.

The first GT-HO variant produced 300 bhp (224 kW; 304 PS) due to a larger carburetor, and changes to the camshaft and intake. Changes also were made to the suspension, including stiffer shock absorbers and springs and larger-diameter roll bars. Despite the changes made, at the 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 500 poor tyre performance meant that drivers had to pit regularly over the opposition. However, a privately entered XW GT-HO of Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland claimed second outright. In 1970, the Cleveland V8 engine replaced the previous Windsor engines, the 351 cubic-inch Cleveland engine was first used in a small batch of Phase 1 specification XW GT's, these are retrospectively referred to as "Phase 1.5s". Ford modified the engine in the Phase II, with a larger carburetor (700cfm) over the Cleveland's original 600 cfm version. Allan Moffat claimed his first Bathurst win at the hands of a Phase II at the 1970 Hardie-Ferodo 500, with Bruce McPhee second, giving Ford Works Team a 1 - 2 finish. The Ford Motor Company Falcon XY GT is a sports sedan based on the Ford Falcon XY. Released in 1970 by Ford Australia, with the GTHO Phase III released in 1971. Some 1,557 units were produced from September 1970 to December 1971 with 300 GTHO Phase IIIs produced from May 1971 to November 1971. It was the fourth in the initial series of the Ford Falcon GT. A limited number were exported to South Africa, wearing Fairmont GT badging. The Fairmont GT model is starting to increase in value as Falcon GTs become harder to find and buyers beginning to see the Fairmont as a genuine GT. With the rev limiter disabled it is capable of 252 kilometres per hour (157 mph) and can exceed 7,000rpm (at high risk of engine failure) in fourth gear. The rev limiter is set to 6,150rpm. The engine type was a 351 Cleveland (carried over from the XW GT/GT-HO Phase II). While Ford stated an output of 300 horsepower, the engine was reputed to produce over 350 horsepower.

Funny thing was,in 69 Moffs Falcon had no tyre problems because he was used to the type of tyres worn on the works car and also he was a smoother driver. The South African Fairmont GTs were not built in Australia but assembled in South Africa from CKD parts sent over, much like Cortinas, Escorts and Capri's were exported from the UK in flat pack CKD and assembled in Sydney's Homebush assembly plant which is approximately where the Sydney 2000 Olympics stadium now stands. And SA XW/XY Fairmont GTs were stamped MS33 as opposed to JG33 for the Falcon GT.

I live in Bathurst and love this track. Not sure when that race was - but not too long ago by the look of the track. As its a public road I do a lap of the mountain regularly. Its so hard to stick to 60km/h!!! (except on the way back down the mountain). Obviously many don't as there was an article in the local paper recently about the number of people caught speeding down Conrod Straight over the Christmas break!! Enjoy!!

It is a shaker. Similar to 69-70 Mustangs Fast car among a lot of older and slower cars. The Charger was the only real opposition and that was slower.

Aussie Muscle Cars from that era were designed to win races on that track. The XY GTHO Phase III was the best and greatest of them. The shaker scoop is still popular. Best idea ever.

Hi mate. I don’t know if anyone has said this but GT stood for Grand tourer and HO was Handling Option. Which is why it corners like it’s on rails. Great video 👍

The HO badges came from a Ford USA where they stood for High Output. We changed it to Handling Options to placate the insurance companies.

Ah , this is historic racing at its best, on one of the world's greatest racing tracks! During the week the circuit operates as a public road built on the side of Mt Panorama in Bathurst, NSW but it is closed a few times each year (maximum 5 times) for some classic motor car racing, principally the Bathurst 1000 touring car race (= 621 miles), originally known as the Hardie Ferodo 500 (miles). Bike racing is not held due to the constraints of the track in case of accident. Some course facts include: Circuit Length: 6.213km (3.9 miles) Length of Conrod Straight = 1.916km (1.2 miles) Length of Mountain Straight = 1.111km (0.7 miles) Highest Point: 862m (0.53 miles) above sea level Grades of up to 1 in 6.13 Vertical height range: 174 metres (0.1 mile) from the bottom of the circuit (Pit Straight) to the top of circuit at 'Skyline'. Race direction (during major events): anti-clockwise. Enjoy the racing! Great channel!! Subscribed!

My mail run contract included Mt Pan, as it's affectionately known by the locals, 5 days a week for 7 years, so I've clocked more miles on this track than almost anyone. I've also nearly been wiped out by idiots that think they are Jack Brabham or Max Verstappen! During the week it's a normal road with a normal urban speed limit. The Chrysler has not got the Big V8 that it has in the US :(

As a local, I've never heard it called mt pan. Idk if that was a long time ago or what but now it's The Mount. But I do agree that people forget it's actually a public road. They come out and try for their chance at glory and end up in the advocate as just another twit doing double the speed limit. 🙄
