The days when the great race as Touring Cars all makes an models in the same race. Drivers having to negotiate traffic, lapping slower cars pure racing testosterone. Blue car is a Chrysler Valiant VF Pacer. They were a locally modified version of the US Chryslers, and had a 225ci slant-6, 2-barrel carb and 3-speed gearbox. Not sure about the "hemi" comment by one of the commentators, as the slant-6 with hemi heads wasn't introduced until the following model, the VG, which featured a 245ci hemi slant-6, and with the E34 option a hotter camshaft and a 4-barrel carby. They were available as a 4-door sedan and 2-door hardtop. However, these were not the ultimate sporty Aussie Valiants. The following model, the Australian-designed VH, saw the introduction of a new 2-door coupe, the Charger. The sporting version was the E38 R/T Six Pack, which saw the 265ci Hemi-6 fitted with triple Weber dual sidedraft carbs and a pretty hot cam. However, it was still limited with a 3-speed gearbox until the E49 Charger, with as well as a fourth gear had an even hotter camshaft and tubular exhaust headers, and challenged the bigger V8s for performance. At their release they were fastest production 6-cylinder car in the world and basically the only locally-made car that was quicker than them was the Ford Falcon XY 351 GTHO Phase 3.

My thoughts also about the 225. However it seems this series allows fitting of different spec motors from the same manufacturer. Went 265, 318 and now 400 it seems. Rules allowed changes to keep even racing in the field. Not well publicised rules to help with the underdog does good excitement and encourage variety.

It was some of the most fantastic racing I've ever seen, and the sound... glorious. One of the Jags rolled end over end coming out of turn 1, so you know those guys were going for it. Mopar wedge small block V8 instead of the 6. Has won a couple of races which the 6 could never manage against the 650hp+ of the other cars. @@georgepantazis141that appears to be a VF, for which a 318ci V8 was an option. The following model, the VH had optional 318ci and 340ci V8s. I helped build Tony Karanfilovski's #88 Mustang, these cars are nothing like they were in period. Apart from the various engine sizes amongst the Manufacturers, They are basically NASCAR running gear under the shells. The gearboxes are a G-Force GSR box, The Diff is a custom 9" with quick removal centres for ratio changes at the track. Brakes upfront were floating hat rotors with Brembo 6 pot calipers and 4 spot calipers at the rear. I remember painstakingly getting the measurements and setting up the tramp bars for the Diff and at the first test session Glenn Seton after not even completing 1 lap got us to remove them. He was just incredible to work with. It was an absolute joy to be in the pits and at the track with these guys. The TCM series had great camaraderie. I'm just thankful that I got to be a part of it.

I have been to NASCAR races and Indy car races and local dirt track races. My favorite race by far was the vintage races at Mid Ohio. Every race was a blast to watch. My favorite spot to watch was at the bottom of the corkscrew. Thanks to some veteran race fans I now want to go to the Watkins Glen vintage races, they said that they run old F1 cars through the city on the old road course. Sounds awesome to me. Great video as usual.

Come down for a visit Ian. The Bathurst 1000 is normally held on the 2nd Sunday in October with lots off supporting events in the days leading up to the race. It's a public road so when there's no racing on, you can drive around the track in your own car (admirably at a slightly lower speed.)

The cars that they are building as "replicas" are worth a fortune in themselves. The #88 car is a genuine Boss 351 1969 Mustang, George Nittus back in 2012 was racing a genuine XY Falcon GT HO. Some of these cars are worth a mint in a museum without the racing decals and upgrades.

I grew up in the 60's & 70's watching John Bowe, Peter Brock, Bob Jane and Allan Moffatt at Mallala. I remember the weekend that Moffatt's GTHO was stolen early raceday morning and not returned till after the race; abandoned in the Adelaide hills with an apology note (of sorts).

So for your interest, the Torana running second through the race is powered by a 308ci V8, the Mustang that led the race was running a 351 Cleveland but admittedly is a heavier vehicle. The Torana’s roots though, lay in the Opel Ascona which was limited to 4 cylinder engines in Europe, us Aussies though, built them with 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engine options the Cream of the crop though being the Torana SLR5000’s of which less than 300 were built and the Torana A9X coupe with just 33 built, one genuine example was recently sold at auction for AU$910,000.

The other blue vehicle in the paused footage at the end, is Australia's most prized Ford 1971 XY GT HO 351cc phase 3. HO stands for homologated options, a minimum of 500 vehicles needed to be build to qualify for racing, to prevent factory team domination with exclusive specials that privateers couldn't afford. Another vehicle not sold in America was the 1971-74 Holden HQ Monaro GTS 308cc 5.0L. It is the silver car with twin broad orange racing stripes and the rectangular taillights in the bumper bar. Arguably the second most desired Holden after the 1977-79 Torana A9X, a 2 door, fast back version of the red and white, SLR 5000 that John Bowe drove.

The business I work for also sells firewood to campers during race week. Which is in a couple of weeks after being put back because of covid. Also the Big building you see every now and then is a hotel. Its where the wife and I escape to for a weekend away from the kids. You can't make an actual reservation there during race week, you go on a waiting list and if someone from the previous year doen't book a room you advance on the list. Last time I asked it was around $8000 for a standard room for the week.

Ian, it takes a brave man with very large nut's to do what these driver's do, the camera can't do Bathurst justice, it is way steeper than it looks. It is one heck of a place especially across the top, and it's virtually blind up there for the driver's and then in the wet you can only imagine how that would be. Another great video Ian. I really enjoy your Bathurst videos with the old cars. They bring back a lot of memories for me. Mount Panorama racing circuit was established originally for the Australian GP when Phillip Island became unsuitable for it many years ago. I don't mean the current circuit at Phillip Island, in those days it was a street race through the towns. But Mount Panorama was most famous in the late 60s to early 70s for motorbike races at Easter. A four day non stop action event. A bit of trivia for ya, an Australian rider named Jack Forrest, who rode for the BMW factory team, crashed on the last bend leading into Conrod Straight and dislocated his elbow. The bend became known as Forrest's Elbow. Now it is known as Forest Elbow.
