Larry’s an absolute legend of an engineer. I went to my local exhaust bloke in a town I used to live in years ago, and he had a blue VK Commodore out the back, nice example, I was checking it out and he lifted the bonnet and I saw LP on the heads. I nearly dumped a load on the spot. This bloke used to do exhausts for Larry. Respect to a legend.

Larry is unique in that he engineered and built his own cars and was allowed into the Holden engine foundry so he could cast his own block and heads for his race engines, Larry said that there is a few of these engines out there and no one would know that they have got one.
@davidewhite69
@davidewhite69 2 жыл бұрын
Larry said he was allowed by the staff at the Holden engine casting foundry to take off a bit here and there on the block's mold for extra strength/rigidity and his heads had slightly bigger ports with some unique features internally for better flow. He also cast his own inlet manifold for his 'slide' fuel injection. But all that was only in the last year of Group A and the first year of V8 supercars because he was forced by the Touring Car Entrants Group Australia (TEGA) to go to the Chevy engine. Later he also had his own brake calipers, designed by him, cast by PBR and machined by Harrop Engineering.

Larry traveled with his self-made canoe to Sri Lanka, navigating with a compass he made himself. He paddled there and harvested some rubber, then paddled to the Dunlop factory where they allowed him to make his own tires using his own recipe of chemicals mixed in with the rubber. He then always even filled the tires with his own air, a special mix of his breath and farts at just the right ratio to give the perfect properties to the tires.

Those Commodores back then were still just production SS Commodores modified for racing. No fancy NASCAR/AUSCAR type chassis then. Souped up engines, gearboxes, diffs and brakes. Larry Perkins is arguably the best engine builder/race engineer in Australia and possibly anywhere in the world. His 5.0Litre Holden engines won many times, piloted by many drivers. To operate a race car at speed is a talent/gift but to have that ability and be able to feel what your engine, gearbox, differential, suspension and tyres are telling you truly is rare. When the vehicle is an extension of your body you are able to coax it to do incredible things with you. This was one such occasion.

Id like to also mention the weekends away to Bathurst for everybody during the 90s and decades before that will never ever ever be forgotten. The drunkenness and goings on was Unbelievable!!!! As in camping at the mountain for 4 days and the goings on that happened almost pretty much completely unregulated (which was just awesome) up till i dunno early 2000s before it was heavily regulated with security police etc. burnouts galore ,cars being wrecked and flipped fires galore people in the back of utes being flung out blind drunk cars rolling . Chicks with there titters out etc was just so good. And thats only part of it. With zero exaggeration. Great memories. Its quite timid now and very family focussed which is fine. But back in the 90s was free for all. And as said before my time too. Just wanted to give you a little insight iwrocker of what it was like off track too. Trivia: Back in the 90s, when Bathurst was on, I'd set up my BIG stereo speakers in the lounge room hooked up to the TV. I'd then set up a bean bag chair in between them, put an esky next to the bean bag and crank up the speakers. 2014 Mostert/Morris did it as well in a Ford and they also had an accident early in the race making any places that had been made towards the front nul and void. The accident put them back to last so they had to pass all the cars again, they led for a quarter of a lap, the last quarter of the final lap and won. Better win in my eyes.

Jack is getting married in February to my beautiful daughter Tara and they have given me a beautiful granddaughter Emmie Jae. Love that guy so much, he’s a sweetheart 💜 Larry still builds engines and there isn’t anything that man can’t do. He will aways be my number 1 legend.

I had a hangover on this day, started out laying on the lounge and I saw the race from start to finish. I just thought or knew to keep watching. As Larry started fighting back, I started to sit up on the lounge. As Larry got closer I started eating. I just stuck with Larry all day. When he finally won, I was over my hang over and back into the beers. I'll never forget this day. At the end, I will always remember Larry saying, ''To finish first, first you must finish''. What a quote !

Larry was building engines for several other teams. One of my brother's friends used to balance engines... Most high level racing in Aus used to send crankshafts there.. and a place in melbourne. Made me smile seeing even Larry crank sitting there.

I was there in 1995 with three mates camped at McPhillamy Park. I am a huge Holden fan and I still drive a Holden to this day I cannot explain the emotion or how loud the crowd roared when we seen Larry took the lead Everyone was covered in beer. For the last 30 laps the crowd was going off and I have never felt or seen anything like it in sports sense. We ran from the top of the mountain to pitch straight to watch the presentation Watching this video was brought back a lot of happiness and memories for me I was 22 years old

LP’s regular co-driver Gregg Hansford had been killed in a 2 litre Super Tourer earlier in 1995, so Ingall was new to the team for Sandown and Bathurst. They had also worked with Endless to develop a brake pad that could do the full 1000Km which helped them recover ground. It was an amazing race. LP was my Gavin that era as he not only drove, but he engineered and built the cars and was competitive on a fraction of the budget of the big teams.

Showing my age here but I watched this race from start to finish. Larry could be pretty irascible, but he ran the team himself, engineered the cars himself, and raced them to win behind the wheel. He didn't have the official backing of the factory, but they knew him well enough to share information which he generally wouldn't reciprocate. He's a legend and this was one of the greatest performances on the mountain ever. Arguably the greatest.

It doesn't matter which car brand you follow, when you see a good driver (and let's face it some of these guys are bloody legends) and a good race, you celebrate the driver and his ability.

He appears to be driving a VS Commodore which were made from1995 to 1997. Larry Perkins is in the same league as Peter Brock. He was brilliant. He won Bathurst 6 times and came third in 3 others. He was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2008.

Been so many huge moments. Great races and rivalries. Larrys win is the best drivers moment, from last to the win. Toughest track. The huge crowd, The carton that should have lasted longer that day but the devastation early blew that..... The second wind (carton) lasted till the end. The only movements from the couch for necessary pits stops. Great choice for review.

Glenn Seton getting denied still hurts as a fan over 25 years later. One of the nicest fellas you'd ever hope to meet and one of the best touring car drivers in the world for over a decade, but never had luck fall his way. Also, for something Australian Touring Car related to react to, may I suggest a video titled Morris/Fitzpatrick Bathurst 1976 FInale.

Look up Larry's drive of the V8 xu2 prototype. Drove it to Adelaide, raced, won. Driving back to Melbourne was a certain incident where he was clocked at 160 mph+ . After racing and winning. HQ Salisbury diff, HQ front discs, 308, 4 Barrel Rochester, 4 speed Aussie box. You've got to read it.

Earlier today I discovered a workshop interview that you might appreciate in your spare time. From the channel “Enforcer and The Dude” (Russell Ingall and Paul Morris) episode 11 (LP’s number) is devoted to an extended interview with Larry talking about his trucks, race cars and his F1 history in the era of the movie “Rush”. Enjoy!

So interestingly, when the v8 touring cars allowed centre lock wheels, larry stuck with 5 studs. So all the other teams, 1 nut per wheel, larrys team was a nascar pitstop. Years ago my brother worked for the bloke who was the engine builder for larry perkins in that time.
