You wouldn''t understand most of these characters as he was imitating (very well) UK personalities from 50+ years ago. Benny had a good voice and even had some Top 10 hits back in the day - check out "Ernie - the fastest milkman in the west' (you will piss yourself - and "Ting A Ling A Loo' (another great laugh).

The characters were parodies of 1st, Ironside Raymond Burr, 2nd Clement Freud, 3rd I think the Beverly Sisters but they all blonde so not sure.

The second one is Clement Freud who is the grandson of Sigmund Freud. He was one of the very first TV cooks (although went on to other things) and looked and sounded just like Benny has portrayed him.

For those who are wondering, and would like to look them up : 1 - Raymond Burr 2 - Sir Clement Freud 3 - Jess(e) Yates - he dropped the e mostly, but was born with such 4 - The Ladybirds, the genuine incarnation of which, performed regularly on the show.

Good 'ol Ben. You won't know them, but he was impersonating Clement Freud (cook/chef), then Jess Yates, presenter of several shows, including 'Stars on Sunday' (a boring religious show), until it was revealed he was having an affair, with a young actress. Hence the topless girl pic. And lastly, 'The Ladybirds', a vocal trio.

Like a lot of comedy from the 70's, it was suggestive, and laced with innuendo, but never smutty or vulgar. Titillation, (with the emphasis on, 'tit'), was also used to its fullest effect.

Some of the characters he portrays, or, takes the piss out of were well known TV personalities in the U.K. at the time. A good friend of mine had a paper round as a schoolboy in West London and delivered Benny Hill's newspapers and periodicals, including "girlie mags". Not for titillation but to source women with the right "look", voluptuous with a hint of innocence, I imagine, to appear on his shows. My mate says he was an absolute gent.

These characters in the sketch were in the popular culture of the 1970s. Cult TV shows Ironside. Clement Freud a restauranteur. He was a Liberal Democrat MP until he lost his seat. He advertised dog food on TV. Jess Yates presented a God slot on TV Stars On Sunday. He got fired for having an affair.

Always great to see a bit of Benny Hill! Altogether, he went on for around 40 years & there are a number of really funny sketches from his shows here on KZbin. Always tough to know what to recommend because, as you say, much of his stuff is risque & 'politically incorrect' by todays standards. One of the funniest sketches I've seen is St John Thomas Hospital from 1984 - although, one bit if not understood in context might cause a measure of pearl clutching! Thanks for a great reaction.
