The hardest thing about Bill Bailey clips is his stand up shows go quickly between standup stories, jokes and songs and sometimes references back to something he has discussed before so it is better to watch a full show. (Bewilderness and part troll are great shows) I would recommend "love song" and "sirens" if you want a taste of his songs.

Personally, I find Bill's, and usually most stand-up comedians, more of a laugh in the panel show format, as I find the instant response/reaction is more off the cuff and funny, depending on the subject matter.
@stuartgunpowder
@stuartgunpowder Жыл бұрын
But but but... The comedy panel shows are most usually very contrived and not at all off the cuff! Okay maybe not all, and I do still really enjoy some of them... But I especially cringe every time I notice a stand up comedian "spontaneously" crowbar some material from their own live show into the conversation, which is something that you would notice all the time if you also catch a lot of their live tour shows...
@brucster99b2
@brucster99b2 Жыл бұрын
@@stuartgunpowder I didn't mean the whole shows off the cuff, but when somebody makes a comment that leaves the door open for a quippy response from one of the other panel members, and you just know somebody's dying to jump in and say something.
@stuartgunpowder
@stuartgunpowder Жыл бұрын
@@brucster99b2 Yes fair enough, that element is really good! It's just highly jarring (might only be my own personal bugbear!) to spot those moments where a comedian is just recycling their own material, because the shows do dress it up to look like it's all improvised from A-Z. I love stand-up comedy, but am also a bit conflicted by it because the material loses something once you are aware of it being used over and over. In a way it must be very tough being a comedian where there is a pressure to at least look like everything is off the cuff. In contrast to for instance a musician, where it's not like there is an expectation to get on stage and improvise all the songs - if anything the audience demands nothing but the old stuff over and over!

I was lucky enough to work for Paul back in the early 90’s as a tape op/ tea boy in his private studio, I was there for 7 yrs, when we had to set up for a recording session we used to do a test with mic’s and he would play all sorts of stuff for a few minutes so we could get a sound, the first time he played Yesterday I just stood there like a lemon not realising he was staring back at me wondering what I was doing, he eventually said you ok. I got used to it but it’s still gave me chills.

While he's a great stand up comedian, most of his gold comes from his musical sets - he really does have a talent of mixing comedy with music! That's what really made him famous - i mean the guy can play too many instruments to a competent level, many of which you've never seen or heard of before! He's niche, but no less of a legend. Try more musical stuff and you'll see why he is loved so much 👍

I find it interesting how people have various reactions to the same thing. Bill's pretty cool, but for me this wasn't one of the better things he's done, and judging by the various responses, good or not so good, to the clip, bares out the point I was making. I must admit, it didn't have me laughing uncontrollably, though it was a little amusing. Different strokes.... I guess.
