Thanks for that Phezz. Respect to your grandfather. My great grandfather was stationed in Darwin during the attacks. He survived. After those initial attacks, 20 months of air raids over the north part of the country continued. Not just Darwin but also Exmouth, Townsville etc. (Estimated that a further 1200 died in that period). In May-Jun 1942, Midget subs attacked Sydney harbour. one of our ships was sunk(HMAS Kuttabul) and 22 men died. There was also some shelling of the coast, no one was killed during that. There was some heavy censorship at the time to the public and even in the years after apparently people didn't talk about it. But in the last few decades it's become more known and talked about and commemorated.

@michaelrogers2080 oh I know the Chicago was the target, I said that in my request post to Phezz. HMAS Kuttabul, regardless of what it was being used for it was still an Australian vessel that was hit and sunk. That's all I meant.

From Australia I was four years old and lived in Sydney when the Japanese subs came into the harbour . I can still remember search lights in the sky and there was panic in our house as every one thought Sydney was going to be bombed. I believe there were more bombs dropped on Darwin than on Pearl Harbor. I have seen the graves in Darwin of those who died, it is such an emotional place to see. Australian sailors were killed in Sydney Harbor, the boat was sunk by a torpedo from one of the two man subs that came in. Three two man subs came in. I was a bit older and was with my parents near Cowra when the Japenese prisoners broke out, people were very afraid at the time. We came very close to a big invasion.The Japenese came down the east coast and west coast of Australia.

My great uncle was a bomber pilot, who flew from Darwin and Townsville, a volunteer from Tasmania! He saved the US Carrier in Sydney Harbour, and he also saved Coffs Harbour from mini subs - he died flying 14 Americans to the Islands in a poorly fueled American plane! His mother never recovered, his father died of grief, he never married or had any children, he was very gifted and very loved! His memorial is in Darwin! 😪👍 America has always had an enormous need for power and control over the world, yes, the Japanese bombings were excessive - overkill! 🤨

The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. On that day, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids This was 3 months after Pearl Harbour February 1942 . Peace out

At the time of the bombings in the northern parts of Australia, most of these occurrences was kept secret from the general public that lived in the southern regions of Australia, so as not to cause panic. Obviously there would of been rumors with evacuated peoples but officially it was hush hush.

My grandfathers/grandmothers, my parents all grew up in the ww2 era, they were tough because of depression, war in Britain and europe and the Australiasia Japanese. Food shortage during the war had to rashen books like Britain.

It makes a lot of us think of our grandparents & other family/friends. You’re right, they were a badass generation of exceptional people. Regarding the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki; Hiroshima was an important economic and military hub, that had so far escaped serious air raid damage, & Nagasaki was a large port with military facilities/factories. The intent was to facilitate the end of the war. When the Japanese surrender was still not forthcoming after Hiroshima, Nagasaki became the second target. It served it’s purpose & was deemed justified at the time. The death of so many civilians was horrific & would be a war crime by today’s standards but it wasn’t done today…we can only mourn, remember & learn. ✌🏼
