So the guy in green with the funky arm action you were talking about is called Lasith Malinga, but he is sometimes known, affectionately, as "Slinga Malinga" due to that action. He is extremely accurate and successful though. There are some really weird and funky bowling styles out there.

In case you're wondering, the distance between the bowler bowling and the batsman batting is just 22 yards(approx. 20 m) so any bowl with the speed of more than 80 mph is pretty fast for the batsman. Also the bowl is made up of hard leather.

Actually it is 17.6 meters because that is the length of the the 2 crease lines. 20 meters is the length between the 2 stumps. Every batsmen bats on the crease and not on the stumps therefore it is actually 17.6 meters. Same with the bowler.

Actuallly it is the BALL that is made out of leather....a leather skin cupped and sewn around an inner core that is wound with multiple string like windings. The BOWL constitutes the bowler delivering the ball.

There is a thing called LBW (leg before wicket), basically if the ref determines a ball would have hit the wicket but the leg was in the way, that counts as an out.

At 2:40 that was Brett Lee (Aus) hitting Alex Tudor (Eng). Tudor was a bowler who was no 'mug' with the bat but not a frontline batsman, whilst Lee was one of the quickest bowlers of all time. I never like to see tail end batsmen who are not equipped to deal with real pace getting hit by fast bouncers; it's not nice!

I’m from South Africa and you crack me up lol 🤣🤣🤣. But yea, uhm you don’t HAVE to bounce it. It can’t arrive at you above the waistline without bouncing though. So basically the bounce is an added effect in difficulty. Bro if ur legs block the ball from hitting the wickets (sticks) it’s out. Only ur bat can stop the ball from hitting the sticks. Rules on leg before wicket should be looked at by you though

You don't have to bounce it, but most balls do bounce because that is what works. At 1:13 the ball that does not bounce is a high full toss would be called as a 'no ball', the bowler would get a warning from the umpire, the batting side get a penalty run and the bowler has to bowl it again. If he bowls one more like that his captain would have to take him off and not use him again in that innings. The ball cannot reach/pass the batsman above waist high (in his normal stance). Full tosses between the mid-thigh and mid shin, for instance, will generally get hit a long way by batsmen these days. If you can get bouncing at the batsmen's feet that is a difficult delivery to deal with, but it has to be used as a surprise ball. At 7:23 it was the same a high full toss; the bowler would have been penalised for that. The main problem with ball like that is that at this sort of pace the batsman has about 0.4 of a second to respond before the ball hits him and if it is much higher than a usual delivery he just cannot locate the ball quickly enough, because he is not looking there. If a slow bowler does it he can probably hit it 'out of the park' but when it is 85-100 mph it is another story.

Professional test fast bowlers constantly bowl 90mph and above ... Batsmen have 0,5 secs to decide on the speed, direction, any spin/swing before the ball arrives from the bowlers hand, THEN decide on what sort of 'bat swing' to make (defensive, attacking, also taking into account the fielders placing)... It is sensible to wear a helmet, it is not compulsory .. You will no make any cricket friends by continuing to use the word 'sticks', the 3 vertical ones are stumps, the 2 smaller ones are bails and the whole is a wicket ...

You don't have to bounce it, but if you don't it can be easier for the batter to smash it. 90% of cricket's skill and difficulty, for batter and bowler, is based on the fact that the ball is intended to be bounced. Hence adjusting to the degree of bounce in the surface is crucial. Indian subcontinent pitches can be dead to fast bowlers.

In baseball, all balls do not have bounce (full toss in cricket terms). But due to foul area, the playable area is restricted. Without foul area, such balls are easiest to score.

Surprisingly bats don't break very often, which is just as well because good quality 'English willow' bats (the best) are not cheap! They are more likely to develop a longitudinal crack following the grain rather than at 90 degrees to the grain as in this video. It is true to say that the modern style of bats don't last so long because they are kiln dried to have less moisture content than more traditional models: this gives more 'ping' off the sweet spot but less durability. This is okay if you are a big-hitting pro with a sponsored deal with a bat manufacturer but not so good for the amateur players. Helmet construction is very sophisticated now but there is still, necessarily, a compromise between strength, weight, comfort, visibility (and hearing) for the wearer and some flexibility to reduce the shock of impact.

Bouncing the ball is what makes it really hard. The ball might swing, it might bounce higher or lower, it might go straight or might chnage it's trajectory. Except the bowler no one knows, even the top batsmen predicts the ball and starts swinging in the direction they think the ball might go. If you just throw the ball without bouncing, the variables are less and it makes it really easy for the batsman to pickup the trajectory of the ball. If you watch a cricket match, most of the balls that are thrown in cricket without bouncing are smashed to boundary.

Nowadays the helmets all have the "cage", called the grille, to protect the batsman. In the old days helmets were made differently and were optional, and way back at the beginning, didn't exist at all. You can choose not to wear a helmet against the slow bowlers if you want, but batsmen usually don't because you can get hurt even with a slow bowler. There have been deaths. A few years ago an Australian died after being hit on the neck during a club game. It was kind of a freak accident, but since then batsmen have the choice to wear extra neck protection attached to their helmets as well. The ball is very hard and the quickest fast bowlers bowl around 90 miles per hour.

By "way back at the beginning" you make it sound like the beginning of time! I was in my thirties when helmets began to come in and it was probably not until the early 90's before they became 'de rigueur' at amateur, recreational level. Now all players of 18 or under MUST wear them in 'organised' cricket. I'm retired from playing and I never wore one at all because I had played too long without to get used to wearing one.

They used to play without head gear. I remember being at a West Indies England lagame at Lords. The West Indies had two fearsome fast bowlers, Wes Hall and Charlie Griffiths. They battered England. England were fighting to save the game with Brian Close standing his ground; he was black and blue from the hits. West Indies needed one more wicket when Colin Cowdrey came in as the last man. He was a top order batsman but had retired hurt when the fast bowlers had broken his arm. Nevertheless he and Close saved the day and the match was drawn.

1. No, you don't have to bounce the ball, but at the ball tends to change direction as it bounces, bouncing it makes it harder to hit. A non bouncing ball is called a 'full toss' and often (because it doesn't deflect off the ground) gets hit for four or six. 2. Three different types of bowler for you. a. 'Slow' or 'spin' bowlers (maybe 40-50 miles per hour) - flick the ball either with their fingers or with action or their wrist to cause it to spin very fast. This makes it swing in the air, but more dramatically change direction off the ground. If the ball was going too fast it's own momentum would overwhelm the effect of the spin, which is why spin bowlers bowl slower. b. 'Medium pace' or 'seam' bowlers. These are middle speed (say 60-70 miles per hour) and use aerodymamic effects to cause the ball to curve in the air or the angle of the ball's seam to cause it to deflect off the ground. c. 'Fast bowlers' - yes, there is still areodymamic 'curve ball' effects and delection off the ground, but their main weapon is speed (say 80 miles per hour up)

Say an "average" pace bowler delivers at 85mph (some bowl in excess of 100mph). 85mph is 125 feet per second, so at approximately 60 feet between bowler and batsman it takes 0.5 seconds. The batsman has to determine... the length, the speed, the orientation of the seam, the direction of any spin and whether the shiny side of the ball is set to out or in swinger..... The ball may also react erratically after bouncing on the ground... This is all part of the trap :D

Don't forget that the bowled ball WILL lose some percentage of the release velocity when it lands and bounces off the wicket. Modern day telecsts often display the delivery value and the value for point of contact on the bat. Often around 10% loss.

At 1:45 the batsman's helmet came off and knocked the bails off; if any of the batsman's 'equipment' hits the stumps like this he/she is out 'Hit wicket'. Your pads could be as big as you want; enormous! But would you be able to run with them on and what would they weigh, especially if you are playing in a very hot climate? However big they are, they are not going to stop the umpire from giving you out lbw.

Most of the Americans think the bounce slows down the ball and makes it easier. We all know the full toss is always smashed to boundaries by Rohit or Dhoni.

And the bounce do make the ball slower, but it's not speed that makes the ball harder to hit. The ball might go low, high, might change it's trajectory. The variables involved makes it harder to hit a bouncing ball.

It's more difficult to hit if the ball bounces. It comes at an uncomfortable height or angle for the batsman to generate enough momentum to hit it hard. That's why bowlers bounce it. A baseball style of aerial ball will be very easy to hit in cricket because the bat has more surface area and you can hit the ball anywhere in the field.

No, the ball doesn't have to bounce. A ball bowled without bouncing and arrives below the batsman's waist is called 'a full toss' (no, I'm not joking) and a ball above the waist is called 'a beamer'. You may want to look up the names of the fielding positions in cricket. Steve, London.

Those "beamers" have a name derived from the term BEAN BALL which they can still be called by some commentators. A bean ball is one directed at the head and constitutes a no ball / free hit...as defined in the Laws of Cricket. Bowlers are given a signal warning by umpires indicating such and excessive use of head high deliveries can see a bowler removed.

A beamer (no bounce above the waist) is an illegal ball, called a "no ball". Average speed is about 150km for a fast bowler. that's about 90-95mph. Not a pleasant experience facing really fast bowling.....

At 5:20 that was Shaun Tait (Aus) who along with Brett Lee (Aus) and Shoaib Akhtar (PAK) were probably the three fastest of the 2000-2015 bowlers (95-100 mph). He played just 3 Test matches and 35 ODI's before it became clear his body couldn't handle the strain of bowling normal spells so he became one of the T20 'nomads' travelling around the world and bowling his 4 over stints in a game. He's not alone; Tymal Mills (Eng) is a current quick like that, who has just been selected to replace the injured Joffra Archer in England's T20 World Cup squad (Oct 14 to Nov 17).

At whatever level you play in cricket you will come across bowlers that you find fast. At the highest levels there are more of course. I use to get an adrenaline buzz from it as an opener, but a lot of that comes after the actual experience. I also used to find that the next time I played and I was only facing 'medium-pacers' that it was dull; an anticlimax!

There would be no benefit to the batsman having larger pads. Beside being bowled, caught, stumped, run-out you can also be out leg before wicket LBW. When the batsman is struck on the pads in front of the stumps. If the umpire believes the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps had the batsmans legs not been in the way.
