Played alot of both sports, batting well in cricket is far tougher, reaction times are shorter due the movement of the seam or spin when it bounces, the espn thing they did showed a baseball player hitting the ball with a cricket bat easier, but he was being bowled full tosses, not balls that bounce. Any batsman in cricket can smash a full toss. Baseball is a fun game, but is more about power, cricket has alot more intricacies, subtleties and variety and is far trickier to play. (thats excluding T20 which isn't really cricket)

Can I add reaction time VS eyesight to hit the ball in baseball ? I played both & played / coached baseball but I think baseball was tougher as you have a 66' length on a cricket pitch compared tp a 60.5' distance from pitcher to batter. Either way - before & where a "Hector Protector" or your Jatz Crackers are in Jeopardy LOL.

@@matthewbrown6163 It is harder to "middle" ball in baseball, purely due to having a round bat, but as my eyesight declined over the years playing both sports it is definitely harder to maintain your ability in cricket and your reaction times the same issue purely because the ball bounces and can seam, swing, spin off the pitch, a full toss, like a baseball pitch was much easier read with declining eyesight and reactions.

11:40 To answer your question Ian, An "air ball" or "full toss" as we call it in cricket can usually be easier to hit (unless its headed straight for your head at speed). Most batsman heavily punish a bolwer who delivers a full toss by hitting it for 6 runs (what you would call a home run in baseball). Because if the ball is in the air, it's less likely to deviate as much as it can when it hits the pitch and bounces/swings. Sometimes the batsman will walk up the pitch towards the bowler as he is bowling the ball and try to hit the ball on the full to purposefully make it a full toss.

One thing the person in the video fails to mention is the bounce of the ball. It is not always the goal of bowling fast, it is to get the ball to land exactly where it needs to for the bowler to hopefully 'bowl' the batsman out (that is the ultimate wicket, bowling someone out!). In baseball you pitch at the player, in cricket you are aiming for those wickets, for the most part. I dont think comparing speeds is the best way to compare a sport as both sports are very different, the only similarity is they both use a bat and a ball.

No doubt the strike zone is way larger than cricket stumps and it's way easier to be accurate with a full toss than it is to be accurate when bouncing the ball first (A worn pitch makes it somewhat random). Also chucking (Throw bowling) is banned in cricket BECAUSE its to easy to be accurate and too easy to put swing on it.

Incorrect. In baseball the pitcher is aiming to get the pitch into the strike zone. This is one of the very first actions under 12's pitchers / catchers are coached in. 2:55 I see they used a miss leading statistic there. The difficulty in cricket comes from how the ball bounces after it hits the ground. Hitting a 'full toss' is always considered easy in cricket, that's why they're hardly ever used (Every single pitch thrown in baseball is a full toss by the way). So you don't have the entire distance between wickets to react, you have from where the ball bounces up pitch then the batter makes adjustments based on how the ball bounces, like 0.01 sec to react to it so it's pure instinct and WAY WAY harder for cricket over baseball there, especially when facing spin bowlers but also for fast ballers that put a little turn on it and when the cricket pitch gets a bit worn out, the ball can hit small pot holes and bounce randomly leading to edges then caught. (That's why Cricket uses a bigger bat, it would simply be impossible to use a baseball bat for it).

That's rubbish. how can a batsman expect to react in that time. In cricket we coach kids and newcomers to focus on the ball in the bowler's hand and to observe the grip at the point of release. Learning to read the grip will tell a knowledgeable batsman what the ball is likely to do in the air, for a pace bowler, and then off the ground for a spin or seam bowler. So any competent batter is reading the ball from the hand. The same goes for baseball. Read up on terms called "hard centering" and "soft centering".

@@flamingfrancis It's not reaction, it's pure instinct! Of course you can't react in that amount of time, it's your instinct that makes the adjustments. Also you get nothing good from "Reading the grip" it's stupid to be focusing on that and you're a bad coach for teaching that fallacy because in many cases it will back fire on you, think about swing bowls and reverse swing bowls, they have the same hand grip yet they swing opposite directions (Dictated by the smooth side of the ball which that batter can't see). Also the leg break, wrongun and flipper are identical grip positions, it's only the wrist angle that changes it and that's too quick a motion for batters to see. Not even to mention pitch condition that will effect the bounce angle, or that if a bowler spots a low IQ batter "Reading his grip" they can bait him with finger position only to bowl out something different. Only low IQ batters "read the grip" so no dude your opinion is incorrect and I stand by my own analysis. The better way to anticipate which ball is coming at you is to understand fielder layout for example: Many slips means they're looking for an edge. So IMO you can only truly react with instinct after the ball has bounced, reading the grip is detrimental.

And the bowler can be really good at hiding what sort of delivery he is sending down and the batsman has no clue until the ball hits the ground just what he is facing. he then has to adjust his strike accordingly. I've seen this comparison before a couple of times. He makes a good attempt on some things but he is so wrong on others that it is frustrating. He is right that it is harder to hit a baseball than a cricket ball but I have never heard anyone argue otherwise. The big difference is that if you go up to bat in baseball and you miss, well that is ok because if you hit three times in 10 you are doing alright. In cricket you are likely to be "at bat," to use a baseball term, for hours. It is a totally different skill. And then he goes and talks about reaction time by commenting on the distance, saying that the distance between the stumps is further than the distance pitched in baseball. He knows full well that the batsman stands a full metre and more in front of the stumps and the bowler bowls the ball the same distance in front of the stumps. If you look at his diagram you will see a line marked "the popping crease," that is where the batsmen stands and the bowler bowls from. The distance is about the same. But reaction time has almost nothing to do with the distance, it has to do with the type of delivery and where on the pitch it bounces before getting to the batsman. That was a far as I got watching this again - he does have some good videos but this is not one of them.
@flamingfrancis
@flamingfrancis 2 жыл бұрын
To clarify. When a pitcher delivers he / she utilises the pitching plate and physically drives hard forward with a longish stride. That stride averages 1.1-1.2 metres and with pronation of the arm the ball is released closer to the hitter. Clearly if the distance travelled is shorter and speed of ball is equal then the ball gets there faster. Pitchers rely on leg drive and arm speed develop their velocity whereas the bowler, especially quicks, sometimes has a 30 metre run up. The great Lillee used to take a long run up but after injury he shortened it and sometimes bowled from 1-2 metres back of the bowling crease. I'm sure some of the great Windies quicks I saw used to hurdle the fence. With many decades in both sports I have to say I find videos like this one very tiresome and schoolboyish.

I'm not sure how accurate this video is. In terms of eyeballs on TVs, and ground attendance, the cricket world cup has proven to be seen by a far larger audience than baseballs world series. Cricket is considered the 2nd most popular sport in the world behind soccer. Because they compared 2 batsmen, one from each sport, did they take into consideration the talent of each individual batsmen? That cricket guy, I don't even recognise. Also, while the cricket bat is flat, you don't want to hit it off the edge of the bat, you have less controll over what the ball is doing from the edge, because the ball may make the bat twist in your hand. The bowling speed comparison seems like they included spin bowlers in that (who intentionally bowl slow). If they weren't included, most fast bowlers will bowl between 140 km/h - 150 km/h (90-95mph). Some getting up to 160 km/h (100mph). If your getting bruises on your hand when catching, then there's something wrong with your technique. If you see the ball coming, a full toss (non bouncing ball) is way easier to hit. Bowlers usually use the seam of the ball to get sideways movement off the pitch. And a spin bowler needs it to bounce so the ball will change direction.

The big difference in pitchers is that in baseball it’s basically a throw. In cricket the arm must not bend at the elbow. Hence it’s a bowl. Traditionally it was an under arm style delivery much like softball. But an overarm style evolved which allowed the ball to be bounced of the ground (also interestingly enough also called the “wicket”). The bowler is very strategic and will place fielders in the positions he wants for them to take a catch as he is going to deliver a certain ball which will encourage a certain stroke from the batsman who will hit the ball directly to those waiting fielders. It’s like a game of chess and very tactical. With every deliver the bowler is asking the batsman “can you hit this ball?”
@flamingfrancis
@flamingfrancis 2 жыл бұрын
You need to brush up on that information. There are bowlers whose action was evaluated (it is ongoing) and their action was passed despite having some delection in their arm...Read up on it. There is absolutely no denying the baseball delivery is a pitch / throw and is perfectly within the rules. Asian pitchers (especially JPL) have developed a style called submarine pitching whereby the releast point is roughly level with the calf of the leg. It cannot be compared to the regulation softball pitch. Look up a former great MLB pitcher Dan Quisenberry.

A couple of comments. The second point about needing a quicker reaction time in baseball due to the shorter distance between the pitcher and the batter is largely redundant, as you have seen in the Shane Warne video, that once the ball bounces it's trajectory can change dramatically. And that is only a yard or 2 in front of you. As to test cricket being boring, we recently had the Ashes tests (England v Australia) in Australia, and although Australia won the 5 match series 4-0, the drawn test (4th match) was fascinating right to the end of the 5th and final day (generally 6 hours of play each day) as England held on by a draw, with their last 2 batsmen at the crease. If one of them had gone out it would have meant a 5-0 whitewash. As far as the safety of being possibly hit in the head when you are batting, until 1976ish the batsmen didn't even wear helmets! I have played some local 'village' cricket, and I think I have only worn a helmet once. And if you think a baseball is hard, a cricket ball is harder.

I see a lot of us picked up on the reaction time miss information, as we know cricket reaction is from where the ball bounces up pitch, not from wicket to wicket. @@adammada511 So, explain to me why do we coach players and kids to look at the grip and release point from the hand. Reaction commences at this point when batter decided what the ball will do on contact with the ground. The exact same thing happens in baseball where kids are coached to read the likely action from the grip and armspeed. The bat is wider so as to allow for deflections of the ball...shots are played to a 360Deg. oval and not a quadrant. You cannot deflect as effectively with a baseball bat and it defeats the purpose of the round bat in any case. If anybody were to attend batting practice before an MLB game you would get a good understanding of just how precisely batters can hit the ball for placement.

We can actually perform a hardness test to verify that statement but you have not even mentioned that the more prone (higher raised) seam and the pattern of that seam on the baseball has a more cutting action than the cricket ball. The cricket ball has the central slightly raised cup lips but the stitches around the ball and on the undersewn sections of the four pieces are virtually invisible. And the ball may only be driving a couple of miles slower than a baseball pitch but the length of delivery is over a much shorter space and it's a 360degree game where the ball is always in play and there a dozen ways for to lose your wicket, once, and for the entire game. Part of what also has to be factored into this reaction time is the indecisiveness that can mess up your head because cricket is just as much about not getting out as it is about scoring runs. It has a battle between attack and defence in the batsman's mind that baseball doesn't have. Batters in baseball are all attack (unless they are trying to get walked). Less to think about whilst reacting makes reaction easier.

iWrocker, there are much better videos out there. I've watched that sports science video before. It's not very accurate because the bowlers they use are not good, anyone could have hit it. The whole point of bowling in cricket is to make it hard for the batter, not put the ball into a nice 'strike zone'. Cricket balls bounce and cut (jink), they also swing (curve like baseball). Other times they spin in different directions. If that video was any good they would have quality bowlers at higher speeds making it so much harder to hit. Try hitting a bouncer coming at your head at +140 kph or a swinging yorker at your toes. The video seems to be produced by somebody who thinks they know what they are talking about but really they are missing the important details. I enjoy both sports for what they are but it's like comparing checkers vs chess. Cricket has many more nuances that are not immediately apparent to a casual observer.

I can see you've been running down the list of comments and arguing with everyone, I also read your comment about playing junior cricket 65 years ago, and getting into baseball with your son, that's wonderful. Player, coach and umpire, I understand that you know both games, many of us do. I love baseball, lived in US for years, enjoyed watching many games. I was merely pointing out that the cricket ball moves around much more than can be easily predicted by the batter. A baseball is harder to hit with the round bat, that's true but it's not the only factor. If a baseball player had a cricket bat they would rarely miss, if a cricketer had a baseball bat they would rarely hit it. The games are not similar and neither are the techniques required to play them. Whenever I see a cricket vs baseball video they fail to explore the fine details that make all the difference. Apples and oranges, the points of comparison are false equivalencies. I've been watching both sports for decades, not sure what I said that that made you think I don't understood the nuances of pitching.

@SynthMusicFan 501 I agree. It's not moving 100% of the time, neither is a baseball bending like a banana every time, it's all in the details. Movement of only a few inches is more than enough to catch the edge of the cricket bat or create a strike, a slight change can be deceiving and it can happen late in the ball's flight in either type of sport. Comparing these sports is a futile exercise and many of us in the comments are trying to point out why. The comments are simple by nature because a long explanation would go on forever and achieve little.

Great video Ian a pretty fair assessment of the two sports. But I do have a bone to pick here😅. So just for the record cricket is the second most popular sport in the world with 2.5 billion fans, second only to English football with 3.5 billion fans. Baseball comes in at 7th with around 500 million fans. I must admit I was surprised to see it at 7th. I expected to see it above hockey. They are both great sports, but I will always argue that cricket is a true test of timing, strength and endurance. A batter in baseball may bat more than once in a 1.5-5 hour period but it’s a very short time up to 9 times, on the other hand a batter in cricket can stay at the crease for 1 minute or more than 8 hours over 2 days!! generally speaking The entire time facing potentially 100s of balls that are all trying to get you out or trying to inflict pain. Look up the ‘body line series’ in 1932-33. England were desperate to win the Ashes, we had the late great Don Bradman ( the Don ) in our team and they knew they couldn’t win. May even be good content for a future video. Just to demonstrate the hazards in cricket. On the 27th of November 2014 a chap named Phil Hughes died from a blow to the head which hit him just under the rim of his helmet, he was a legend in the making a real evolving talent cut short by bad luck. So with that in mind back in 1932-33 there was no helmets it was a bloody brutal series. All in all I do agree that a baseball is a little harder to hit, but in baseball you only need to hit it good once to get on base. Where as cricket you need to hit the ball good many many times to score what we call a ‘ton’ or 100 and beyond. Or as the late great Tony Greg ( ex player commentator) would say ( ohhhhh that’s right out of the meat of the bat ) accentually the sweat spot. On the 10th of April 2004 the great B.C. Lara from the West Indies against England scored 400* ( not out ) after he survived 582 bowls over a 778 minute period over almost 2 days of play. That’s just incredible. Along the way he scored 43 fours or ( boundaries )and 4 sixes ( over the boundary on the full ). Cricket being a summer sport only, it can get brutally hot and we never stop or pause games for the heat. Imagine standing out in the middle for that long in sweltering heat. That’s almost 13 hours.!! That’s endurance. Although both are very skill full sports, the endurance of a baseball player is never truly tested. This is why we call a test match a ‘Test’ it combines hand to eye coordination, mental toughness ( mainly from dealing with fast bowlers at 90+ mph for extended periods or ( spells ) and opposing players sledging ) elite fitness, good decision making and communication with your partner, your partner can run you out so big scores are not totally made by the batter himself. Endurance is the only real aspect of the two games that separates baseball from cricket. ( to me ) I’m Australian and I love cricket but do enjoy baseball, I guess I’m a bit bias 😃🏏 I love your channel and your assessment and analysis of various subjects. you dont get bruises on your hands when you catch a cricket ball if you do it properly. It is MUCH easier to catch a ball with a glove, think about the surface area of the bat argument and apply that to your hands. I would say at the top level theyre both super skillful and theyre just different games. However a cricketer could step into a low league baseball game a lot easier than the other way around. Its much easier to hit what we would call a 'full toss' (baseball pitch - not bouncing). The bounce adds so many variables. I guess thats why the bats smaller in baseball.

@SynthMusicFan 501 Yeah its not something I can prove, but my thought process starts with complexity of the game. Baseball is VERY easy to understand and play (yeh it has some obscure rules). There are tons more variables in cricket. Like they said in the video, it may be easier for a baseballer to get 'bat on ball' with a cricket bat, but to actually play a proper shot (and prevent from being dismissed) is a lot harder. My evidence is I played both sports and Baseball is much 'easier' - See the other comments below for futher evidence.

This is an hopeless comparison . The size of the bat has no relevance to which is easier to use since one has to do different things with it. In cricket the bat has to be used to self-defense, for steering the ball into the gaps etc. Then there's the spin off the pitch and movement off the seam etc. which have no place in baseball. Then, a game of cricket can last five days! And a bowler can actually kill you or put you in hospital. The whole comparison is daft. Might as well compare baseball with tennis.

I remember seeing the "scientific" video that this guy was referring to and it was far from scientific. Even the video you are reacting to is not as accurate as it says it is. I've played 25 years of cricket but not baseball. However, my wife played cricket and A grade softball, and my son played both cricket and softball for years (and I helped coach). So, I'm a fan of both and they are very different games. It is interesting to note that the Australian Cricket team has employed baseballers to help them improve their throwing and fielding techniques. And lots of cricketers used to play baseball in the off season. Also, just to clarify that when cricketers send the ball to the batter, it is called bowling. You are not allowed to "throw" at the batter by straightening your arm. However, cricketers can throw the ball when they are fielding it. So, there is a difference between bowling and throwing. As for test cricket being long and boring, well that depends on the game. Yes, it can be long, but the amount of pressure in a close game after 5 days of hard fought cricket can be extremely intense. In fact, when tests finish too quickly it can be a let down. It is good to get to know the game through the shorter formats so you get a handle on it. The better you understand the shorter format, the easier it is to move to understanding the longer format. Lastly, I love watching your stuff - I've watched so much of your car racing, including Bathurst. Glad you are enjoying the Aussie perspective of life.

The “air ball” you were asking about is what we call a “full toss” and I think most cricketers will agree that when you get bowled a full toss, you’re looking at where in the grandstand you wanna hit it, so yeah definitely one of the easier bowls to hit. Where as the bowler can place a bouncing ball in different positions that make it much harder to hit. A “Yorker” is when a bowler, bowls the ball effectively at your TOES! So you haven’t got much time to adjust your feet placement to hit it properly. And you’ve already done a vid on Warney so I don’t have to explain the intricacies of the “Spinner” to you. A good spin bowler can be an absolute nightmare for batters as you’ve seen👍👍😎

An air ball is called a full toss and they’re easier to hit then a ball that has bounced because the bounce is where the variables come into play like different height in the bounce, spin, direction change and speed and also the seam on the ball is what makes all of that happen and how the bowler holds and releases the ball when bowling.

When bowling in cricket, their is bowler can cause the ball to swing through the air, either way, vary the length, so the ball can be at your toes, or nose, and react to the pitch. As time goes on the pitch conditions change with cracks opening up, and rough patches from the bowlers footsteps, bowlers bowl from both ends. This adds a randomness to the deliveries, so a ball landing almost in the same place can either jag up high, or stay low.

We call the “baseball” type bowl, ie with no bounce, a full toss. A full toss is definitely easier to hit. They’re just more unexpected, so the surprise element counts for something. So a cricket ball has a really prominent seam. A seam bowler will attempt to bounce the ball on the seam which can introduce a random deviation. So it's definitely harder to hit a ball that bounced. Plus, there are deviations in the ground. It's played on a clay/loam/grass surface which cracks, forms holes where the bowler's front foot lands on the crease line and is another source of random variation.

Another aspect of cricket is the turf pitch. It changes over throughout the day, and even more so over 5 days. This means that the batter, the bowler, and the captain will change their tactics depending on how the pitch is playing. One the first day, the pitch is bouncier and better for fast bowlers, then it can even out and become easier for the batters on days 2 and 3, then if the pitch breaks up towards the end of the test, the spin bowlers will get the most out of it. Then there are different types of pitches with different soils, different grasses (and grass length), and the hardness/softness of the pitch which can soften the ball. The pitch also changes if it gets wet from rain and then begins to dry off. If the pitch develops some cracks and the ball hits them, then the ball can go anywhere: along the ground, straight up at your head, or sideways. So, there is even skill in reading the pitch, understanding what it is doing and adjusting accordingly.

Firstly any sport played at the highest level takes enormous skill. But a few points, since i recently looked this up myself. The speed of the average fast ball in baseball is about the same as most international pace bowlers with the cricket ball being slightly heavier. Its significantly easier to hit a ball that doesnt bounce. But that means little between the two because a baseballer has 3 chances to hit it over the fence, the cricketer could just block it they wanted. But usually the cricketer will hit the full toss (no bounce) to the fence and its considered a trash ball. Reason being, a ball that bounces will move sideways off the ground (pitch). The fast bowler will try to land it on the seam of the ball so it does. BUT - again the cricketer can just block or let the ball go if they want. The baseballer generally has 3 balls to make something happen. To the guy in the video saying its proven baseballers can more easily hit with a cricket bat is STUPID. They were bowling full tosses waist height at them. Try 145km/h bouncing at their heads at see how easy it is.

A baseball hitter is NOT aiming to hit the ball out of the park. A ball that goes over the fence is a mishit because the hitter has hit under the ball. The real intention is to hit a hard line drive through infielders for a safe hit. The situation varies and is dependent on runners on base and the count situation on the batter.

Before a match begins, the team captains (who are also players) toss a coin to decide which team will bat first and so take the first innings.[69] Innings is the term used for each phase of play in the match.[69] In each innings, one team bats, attempting to score runs, while the other team bowls and fields the ball, attempting to restrict the scoring and dismiss the batters. When the first innings ends, the teams change roles; there can be two to four innings depending upon the type of match. A match with four scheduled innings is played over three to five days; a match with two scheduled innings is usually completed in a single day.[69] During an innings, all eleven members of the fielding team take the field, but usually only two members of the batting team are on the field at any given time. The exception to this is if a batter has any type of illness or injury restricting his or her ability to run, in this case the batter is allowed a runner who can run between the wickets when the batter hits a scoring run or runs, though this does not apply in international cricket. The order of batters is usually announced just before the match, but it can be varied. The main objective of each team is to score more runs than their opponents but, in some forms of cricket, it is also necessary to dismiss all of the opposition batters in their final innings in order to win the match, which would otherwise be drawn.[74] If the team batting last is all out having scored fewer runs than their opponents, they are said to have "lost by n runs" (where n is the difference between the aggregate number of runs scored by the teams). If the team that bats last scores enough runs to win, it is said to have "won by n wickets", where n is the number of wickets left to fall. For example, a team that passes its opponents' total having lost six wickets (i.e., six of their batters have been dismissed) have won the match "by four wickets". In a two-innings-a-side match, one team's combined first and second innings total may be less than the other side's first innings total. The team with the greater score is then said to have "won by an innings and n runs", and does not need to bat again: n is the difference between the two teams' aggregate scores. If the team batting last is all out, and both sides have scored the same number of runs, then the match is a tie; this result is quite rare in matches of two innings a side with only 62 happening in first-class matches from the earliest known instance in 1741 until January 2017. In the traditional form of the game, if the time allotted for the match expires before either side can win, then the game is declared a draw. If the match has only a single innings per side, then usually a maximum number of overs applies to each innings. Such a match is called a "limited overs" or "one-day" match, and the side scoring more runs wins regardless of the number of wickets lost, so that a draw cannot occur. In some cases, ties are broken by having each team bat for a one-over innings known as a Super Over; subsequent Super Overs may be played if the first Super Over ends in a tie. If this kind of match is temporarily interrupted by bad weather, then a complex mathematical formula, known as the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after its developers, is often used to recalculate a new target score. A one-day match can also be declared a "no-result" if fewer than a previously agreed number of overs have been bowled by either team, in circumstances that make normal resumption of play impossible; for example, wet weather. In all forms of cricket, the umpires can abandon the match if bad light or rain makes it impossible to continue.[75] There have been instances of entire matches, even Test matches scheduled to be played over five days, being lost to bad weather without a ball being bowled: for example, the third Test of the 1970/71 series in Australia

The biggest difference is that the cricket ball is bowled onto the ground before it is hit. The ball can change direction either from the spin of the ball or as the ball bounces off the seam or if the ball swings in the air. Bowlers polish one side of the ball as it ages to increase the 'swing' of the ball in the air. So, in terms of reaction time, the batsman in cricket has to decide on the direction of the ball as it bounces around 6 to 8 metres in front of him. At 150kph, the reaction time is therefore significantly less than baseball. The ball is bowled on the full only by accident. A full toss is a gift to the batsman because it is so easy to hit with the wide blade of the bat. In the end, it is just not possible to compare the two games with any meaning.

The man who gave cricket the world's best coverage was sports director with Channel Nine from around the World Series Cricket days. David Hill was later targeted by Rupert Murdoch and went to the Fox Network. He studied and developed similar coverage for US sports.

For your question about which pitch (in this case ball) is easy to play, depends on many factors. But in general a "full toss" may it be off or leg would be the easiest to hit given that the batsman could clear the ropes or it would be disastrous for the batsman where they could lose their wicket in the process. The main two types of bowling is fast and spin. There are variations in each style. A fast bowler runs to the crease and bowl where a spin bowler bowls with a slow short run up (they just walk). Either way you could vary your pitch in many ways speed of the pitch, angle of your arm, point of release of the ball from your hand, the seam position of the ball, the slight variations you add from fingers or hand to the ball, the position near the crease where you stop before you pitch the ball, over the wicket or round the wicket, line and length (meaning where the ball bounces off the pitch) the condition of the pitch (some are fast friendly some are spin friendly if its a test match you cannot say some will be fast friendly at the beginning and later on the pitch would turn spin friendly), wind speed and direction (this helps bowlers to decide if the ball swings or will it aid spin etc.) humidity and dew (if its a day and night game or night game). That all being said the pitcher has to read the batsman and apply the variations that he has depending on the conditions and field setting. So its not just running full speed and throwing a ball. For a fast bowler there are in swing, out swing, reverse swing, off cutters, leg cutters, yorkers and by applying the conditions above will give you many options and variations. Spin is my favorite there are two main categories off spin and leg spin. They got off spinners, top spinner, leg spinner, wrong-un (googly), carrom ball, flipper, dhusra etc. flighted variations of those would give more options, varying speed and area its pitched would also give more options.

Ball variation from bounce as well as spin on the ball as well as cracks and deviations in the pitch make it harder to connect with the ball than a ball thrown on the full, or a full toss, as it's known in cricket. On the plus for baseball, I've known many batters to play baseball in the off-season of cricket here in Oz. It does help with being able to get 'bat on ball' so to speak because that's a basic principle of both games. It's great for coordination and picking trajectory even if it doesn't help with pitch or ball variation. It's one more thing that a batter can be intuitive about without much thought and enables focusing on the variation and placement.

Nothing like the fear batting in the high school nets as a high schooler 30 years ago.no pads,no box,compo balls,beamers,bouncers etc, it was war.when ball followed through to net then picked up with hand then threw over back net where they'll be about 20,30,40 dudes jumping in the air for a speky catch and then when got ball have chance to bowl to get right to bat if get batter out while bowling.there was also pushing and shoving when get right to get ball after batter through ball over back net.when you bat your the target so to speak.yea those were the days.fear and balls facing the good fast bowlers.

Always watched cricket with the fam in summer growing up. Played softball/baseball as a representative in school as well as hockey & loved playing all of them. As the guy said you can’t really compare. Side note: my daughter was a cheerleader for a 1st division NRL team for years & they also branched out to cheer for the Sydney Blue Sox. Totally different experience & took some getting used to but great fun either way ✌🏼

The dude delivering this video didn't sound like he'd ever played cricket lol. Cricket has its own safety measures. We don't use gloves because the technique in catching a ball is often taught to kids early on that protects their hands. You never walk away with bruised hands if you learned that technique properly.

The cricket pitch overall is actually smaller. The measurement is wicket to wicket but the batsman stands considerably forward to his/her wicket and the bowler (especially fast bowlers) release the ball a huge distance in front of the opposing wicket.

He never mentioned the different types of wickets, the weather conditions, ie. humidity, wind directions all make a difference in cricket but I imagine a heavier atmosphere would effect a baseball pitch as well.

Glad you watched this video whilst learning about cricket, great context and comparison for someone new to cricket who is familiar with baseball! Once you've become familiar with the rules you can look into the history of the game and great players and great moments, highlights. Lots for you to discover, eventually you'll understand the significance of Shane Warne and other greats of the game.

We call that a full toss which is basically a free hit . In cricket you can get beaten though the air like basketball with swing or curve but when it hits the pitch it can turn or bounce high . More things to worry about .

The hardest bowl to hit (for me personally) is called a 'Yorker' where the ball hits the ground almost directly at your feet. You either have to step forward and take it on the full, risking a runout if missed, a catch from a bad touch, or a wild miss and getting bowled. Or, you close your guard and risk a bad touch or being caught LBW (Leg Before Wicket) As a first order batsman, I like facing fastbowlers, less time means more instinct. I least like Leg Spinners, to much time in the air, trying to guess the spin and take a clean hit.

The ball can bounce just before your feet(Yorker) at speed is very difficult.

As someone that has played both.. Cricket is a more tactical sport.. the bladed bat is used to hit/steer the ball into specific places (Cut shot, sweep etc). It is harder to hit a baseball with a baseball bat.. catching is much easier in baseball as you wear a glove.. Bowling is more of an art than pitching (to a degree) with a bigger variety of bowling styles. The bowler in cricket can use the pitch conditions to vary the swing of the ball (see Shane Warne's spin bowling for an example of how much movement you can get from a rough spot on a cricket pitch)

In cricket the ball bounces on the pitch before it reaches the batsman. That brings other variables into play depending on whether the bowler is a fast or a spin bowler. Pitching (throwing) like baseball is forbidden in cricket. There are also three different forms of cricket....5 day test matches where the pitch can dry/crack over that period and do completely different things, one day matches and T20 matches.

every playing surface is different. which effects how the ball reacts after bouncing. there is a test match between australia v pakistan currently in progress (still day 1) and there is the womens T20 world cup currently being played in new zealand if you want to catch a game. RIP Shane Warne.

I played cricket for 12 seasons and I have tremendous respect for both sports. The position I admire the most in baseball is the catcher. When I played cricket I was an Off Spin bowler which basically means I turned the ball from left to right. Spin bowlers are incredibly effective in T20 cricket because the batsman try to smack them out of the park. But normally the batsman will get beaten by the flight of the delivery a get out. Having good mathematics is another important part of cricket. Also cricket grounds around the world vary in shape and size quite a bit. Grounds in England, New Zealand and West Indies (Caribbean) are normally small and odd shaped. Whereas grounds in Australia, South Africa etc are normally bigger and proper oval shapes. A perfect example of this is comparing Eden Park in New Zealand which is a multi purpose venue and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia which is also a multi purpose venue. The smallest boundary at Eden Park is 46m and the biggest is 68m whereas at the MCG the smallest boundary is 65m and the biggest is 85m.

Hard to hit off ‘the pitch’ which is the name given to the dirt strip they play on. There is a lot of variability to every game to the pitch and in long tests the pitch will degrade overtime and become usually more inconsistent in bounce and/or spinning more. A full toss (not hitting the ground) is considered a bad ball as it is easier to hit and if above the waist is a no ball meaning you can’t get out in the act of striking at it. A ‘Bouncer’ in comparison is legal as yes can be bowled at the head but technically only allowed 1-2 per over (6 balls) above shoulder height. Full tosses can be effective as a surprise ball to keep a run being scored or a fast swinging ball to the bottom of the bat to perform a Yorker which is a difficult ball to block as it is dropping rather than rising off the pitch. A Bouncer is however legal as yes can be bowled at the head but technically only allowed 1-2 per over (every 6 balls) above shoulder height.

I played cricket, and I have played Softball. Cricket has several different kinds of bowler's (another name for pitcher) there are Fast bowler's, medium pace bowler's, off spin bowler's and Leg spin bowler's just to name the basic one's. To answer your question which ball is harder to hit a full pitched ball or a bouncing ball, it all depends on the pitch (the surface) and the weather conditions and also the bowler, the weather conditions can help if it is overcast ☁️ meaning the slight moisture can help the ball move sideways in the air (swing) like the shape of a banana, the pitch (surface) can also play a part if the ball bounces and lands on a specific spot on the seam running the diameter of the ball can also produce sideways movement, you will get more swing from a green wicket and seam movment from quick bowler's but you will also get a bit of seam movement from a dry wicket but less swing unless the weather conditions are right, in saying that you will get more sideways movemnt in the air from a new ball than an old ball. Spin bowlers get more turn off the surface if the pitch has less green grass almost no grass. With all this a ball can be easier to hit on the full if the ball isn't moving around in the air or aimed at your body or head, a bouncing ball can be easy to hit if it is in your hitting zone, every batsman has an area where they love the ball to land so they can swing through the line of the ball, and as a bowler you try not to bowl in that batsmens favourite area. Hope this isn't too confusing, it can get very involved and complex, love the reaction 👌👍

Bouncing ball is generally harder to hit as most of the ball movement happens once it bounces off the ground, however. Some good bowlers are able to move the ball in the air, with some swing or some spin at the last minute You’ll see a lot of batsman charge full tosses because they can be very predictable and subsequently easier to hit out of the grounds for 6.

The Australian national team had an American baseball fielding coach for many years. There is a bit of crossover. In the past many Australian players also played baseball to improve their throwing techniques. No baseball fan at all, but the video is spot on. they are both bat and ball games but their differences are so great there is no comparison. BTW 5 day cricket is the only real cricket for a cricket lover.

Wider bat is for guiding the ball around the field. Full tosses (no bounce) are usually easy to hit so they aren't bowled usually

Played as an opening batsman. If you don't put a Full toss over the ropes, you aren't playing cricket. A Full toss, or a ball that does not bounce, is every batsman's dream. A "yorker", where the ball bounces right at the crease, is a nightmare. A comparison between Cricket and baseball is like a comparison between Basketball and Soccer.

Hi Ian, just one thing that no one has mentioned, there are stumps at both ends of the cricket pitch, to score a run if you don't hit a 4 or a 6, you and the other batsman have to run between the wickets to score a run, while the batsmen are running, the fielder can pick up the ball and throw it at either set of stumps, if the ball hits the stumps before you get there your OUT. Depending on where and how far the batsman hits the ball determines how many times they risk running between the wickets to get as many runs as possible without getting out. A bit like in baseball where you run to the next base, if you don't get there before the ball your out..
