There are a few grades of banger racing that define what you are allowed to do regards crashing. From simple just spinning some one out (rookie bangers) to what you are watching which is National Bangers where anything go's, even going opposite way for head on tickles, but only on bends. Destruction derby is last race of the programme and some of those you think may be wrecks can come out again for that. If it still moves the boys will race it.

Went to a banger race many years back, 2 rival clubs got particularly vicious, it was nuts. One guy ended up on his roof, they stopped the race, turned his car over, and he just carried on racing with his head leaning over 45 degrees to cater for the caved in roof lol
@alanmumford88063 жыл бұрын
I used to do this at a track called Cross-in-Hand in the UK back in the 70's. You were allowed 1 gallon of fuel, you could move the radiator somewhere 'safer'. Had to have 4-point harness, crash helmet and no glass except rear view mirror. Doors had to be secured shut. That was it. Didn't even need to be old enough for a driving licence! I dare say it's all been health 'n' safety-ed now... Yes, it can be brutal!

No offence, but you don't know what you are talking about. 99% of these cars are fucked and nobody wants them, they are too far gone and the good parts are kept and sold cheaply to people so they can keep their old classics on the road. All these shells are behind repair and for a classic car enthusiast it would be far cheaper to buy a solid shell than repair the ones that get raced, these cars are not wanted. The shells they use to race are the type of shell left in some silly old man's front garden that will rot away because they don't have the time or money to restore them (and they are not economically viable to repair). The guys racing them are not stupid and a lot of them have mint versions of the cars they are racing on the road, and they are car enthusiasts themselves who find it sacrilege to race a good car. For a start, some of these cars could be worth money if they was a good example, these ones are not. What would you rather? A car sitting in someone's driveway or garage for years for the owner to die and the persons family sweep the rust off the floor and send it to the crusher? or take it apart and send all the good parts to keep others of the era on the road then race whats left and then send it to the crusher? I kind of know what I am talking about, I don't get involved much these days but I raced myself for five years and was involved hands on for over ten.

The cars are very well built, as you say everything is removed from the interior, they reinforce the doors and put a large bulkhead in behind the driver which is why the cars only crush half the cabin space. Relatively few serious injuries since the drivers wear a lot of protective gear and they’re often pretty big lads with healthy appetites anyway so lots of natural padding. Only rule for racing usually is not to crash directly into the driver’s door. Cars usually do up to about 40mph. Marshalls with flags check the drivers after every hit any sign of injury - or no thumbs up from the driver - and the race is stopped.

In banger racing when you pick up a car in front and ride it all the way to the fence is called 'a follow-in'. When you see them go in one after another into a wrecked car this is called a 'stack up'. I once saw a driver at Sheffield crash, pull his phone out and wave the on coming cars into his whilst he filmed it on his phone!
@stuinNorway3 жыл бұрын
Big difference to US style Demolition Derby is that this is technically a race, and the first to finish a set number of laps wins. The final event of the day will usually be the demolition derby, with lst car running winning. The cars are also not just junkers that are stripped, the safety rules today are actually pretty strict. Apart from the basic strip-down, the fuel tank is removed and a converted fire extuinguisher will be mounted, with spill-proof connection to prevent a fuel leak. The driver's have multi layer fire suits, race helmets, neck braces, the whole works. They also inspect cars before a meeting to ensure the side protection on drivers door (thick steel plate) is there, andthe safety cage around the driver is suitable. Full 5 point racing harness mounted to safety cage, although the seat has to remain original and use original mountings. Add in that this video features no less than 4 classes of banger racing. 1300cc, 1600cc, 2 litre and unlimited (the races with the limos and hearses etc) Been to Arena Essex a few times, but grew up going to Cowdenbeath Racewall monthly, it was a tighter, but faster track. Bangers are hard hitting, but drivers can take a harder knock in the Saloon Stock format, as they really drive a roll cage with a 2L engine, full contact, they bounce off the concrete wall and keep on running. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXXTdZ-Do9Z-ldE

If you live in the UK and follow banger racing, then you understand some of the rivalry that goes on during a race meeting. You get to see scores settled and who is out to get who ! I can't speak for the US demo derby racing as I've not seen that much of it, but here there are well know drivers who to the fans are just as well known as nascar drivers are to their fans. Those who follow banger racing will know which drivers will be the entertainers who love a good crash, who's going to stay out of trouble for the win and those who are famous for their beautifully presented and painted cars. They will know which teams 'war' with which other teams and so on. Seen as a collection of random crashes this video while still entertaining does loose quite a lot of context, but fun none the less.

Used to do this with unprepped cars in our field. Being drunk was our protection... Destruction Derby is the last race of the day. Basically anything that can still move under its own power after the days heats lines up and runs until it can't drive anymore. The only reinforcement allowed is a beefy H frame across the car behind the driver and a door plate, just to protect the driver. The scrutineering is very strict and have seen all of the tricks. Apart from a reinforced water tank instead of a radiator pretty much nothing can be done to protect the mechanicals at all. I think the American DD cars are reinforced more to protect the mechanicals.

Not quite the same as US racing. The initial races are exactly that, a race to win with lots of contact involved. The last race of the night is the Destruction Derby where anything they can get running is taken out one last time before it's crushed. If you notice a lot of cars have the same colour scheme, racing in teams is quite common.

We did exactly the same thing back in the 90s.....Only thing was that it was on our council estate playing fields..... I'm quite sure a few of the 15 and 16yr olds didn't have a full license and insurance either.😎

As a someone whom use to paint SUPERSONICS cars for him before he frequented the "Essex Area" if you can call it that - more like a dirt hole that was constantly with puddles, regardless how hot it was. There were a couple of classes he used to drive in - armoured and the races with caravans. I use to put small insults on the rear of the cars for the "geezers", normally along the lines of "your wife's being this dirty". I can tell you some tales from around the late 80's - mid 90's about these blokes. Deep down they do a lot of charity races for disadvantage kids, real salts of the earths every last one of them. ~Trooper
