The fact that it was Scotland versus England was significant in the patriotic atmosphere as the lyrics are about Scotland defeating England at the battle of Bannockburn and sending King Edward homeward tae think again. This battle was featured in Braveheart. As a proud Scot, this rendition gave me chills.

I remember seeing a video where Scotland were playing Germany in Dortmund I believe. The entire German crowd stayed quiet while the Scots sang. When they finished, the Germans gave them a huge round of applause. You should here the Welsh national anthem next. That's spine shivering.

As an Englishman I can perfectly see how much this song means to my brothers to the north and it's an incredibly stiring song. That said, I lament that its patriotism is based on an anti-English and anti-Union sentiment (celebrating the 1314 victory over Edward II of England at the Battle of Bannockburn and calling for Scotland to rise again against England) and so I prefer Scotland the Brave. But hey, my opinion doesn't matter to the Scots but just thought I'd give a thought from south of the border

Maybe the difference in reverence towards anthems has something to do with their place in the different societies. In the US I gather that the national anthem is used everywhere and might lose it's impact a bit. Here in Scotland (and the UK as a whole) the various anthems arent really used as much and their main use is at sporting events like this, it's rarer and one of the few places where people feel comfortable belting out the song like this.

How is this ironic. England and Scotland gave up their individual sovereign rights in 1707. However, unlike England, Scotland's population didn't agree to it. Which isn't a surprise, seeing at that time (the early 18th century) France & Scotland were threatening to invade England once and for all. England's politicians bribed Scotland's political representatives into what is now a hostage situation where Scots are denied their democratic right to choose their own political path.

Are you aware of the unofficial lines that weren't subtitled in that clip? After "and stood against them" there is clearly a two word bark from the crowd that isn't technically in the song (but almost always is in the song) and after "Proud Edward's army" there's also a two syllable word but not shouted by quite as many of the crowd.

The problem my friend is that your National anthem is played in every game weather in your American Football, Baseball, Basketball or anything on a daily basis, where we in the UK play our National Anthem's at major sporting events like in Football we in England play our National anthem in the League Cup Final, FA Cup Final or in an England Football Match weather home at Wembley Stadium, or away in another country, same goes for both Rugby Union and Rugby League. The only other times is in the presence of a member of the Royal Family at a ceremony or on Remembrance day at the Cenotaph in London. Our National Anthem is Rarely played that is why we sing our National anthem together with love, respect, with devotion and sing it very loudly together as one. You play your National Anthem too many times and far too often that is why some Americans don't sing it like we sing our National Anthem or the Scottish sing there's or the Welsh infact all countries in Europe sing theirs like us and infact the rest of the World. The American National anthem is the most well known one as everyone in the world has heard it more times than any American has heard anyother National anthem of any country in the world. With all due respect the American National Anthem becomes very boring and I suppose that is why many Americans who love there country and rightfully so, but have just become bored of it and just don't sing it. I love our National Anthem but I would love to see I VOW TO THEE become our New National Anthem. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦

I don't get why Americans play the anthem before every game, IMO it devalues it. It's supposed to be special. Here in Europe it's played only before events between countries, maybe just maybe before super bowl type events, the finals of a season. It's also like single teams shouldn't feel they represent the country just like that...

Flower Of Scotland, Listen To The Words, Protestants Should'nt Associate With It As They Are Monarchists And Pledge Fealty To An English Monarch. 😊

I live in Scotland and I think this song is a dirge and I much preferred when it was Scotland the Brave. The Welsh anthem is by far the best of the four UK nations.

No, he didn't. He died trying, and his son died because he failed to achieve what his father couldn't. The Scots had aligned with France, so Scotland winning both wars of Independence didn't end Scotland's unbeaten record over England, it continued into France & Scotland's victory over England in the 100 Year's War. Finally culminating in Scotland taking total ownership of England in 1603. Which was briefly ended when all of the British Isles became a Republic, thanks to the dictatorship of Oliver Cromwell. Which ironically was reversed by the English, when they put a Scot back as head of state. With his granddaughter creating the UK in 1707. Which only happened because the English feared Scotland and France once more waging war on England. Or did you think England gave up its sovereignty for a laugh?

I'm Scottish. I've sang Rule Britannia and God Save The Queen/King far more than Flower Of Scotland. Not all of us want independence, the majority of us want to remain in the UK. Hence a resounding NO in 2014.

As a proud Scotsman, I wish we had a new national anthem that was forward thinking, rather than harking back to a battle in 1314. I expect to be shot down in flames for saying this!

I’m Scottish. All the way back to about 900 ad. Flower of Scotland is not Scotland’s National Anthem…. That’s God Save The King Flower of Scotland was written in the 60’s by Roy Williamson of the folk group The Corries

Eb I'm English I'm fed up that Scotland Wales &Ireland get their own passionate national anthem, we have the boring British god save the king.theres no passion half the mens English football team attempt to sing it some lip syncing it ,its like its sang by aload of tone deaf barstools. Please can england pick there own.i appreciate god save the king or queen as a national anthem for all of great Britain the uk.but can england have their own independent one when representing england.its surely not too much to ask for.

I married a Scots "wildling woman " 30yrs ago and as a proud Englishman I have enjoyed 30yrs of pure no holds bar racist banter with my Scots in-laws. A Scotsman loves to show off his tattoo " Scotland Forever ". If you look close enough you can see he had " I'm Leaving " lasered off his tattoo. It's such a great country it's empty, as they have all come to England.

Yeah; that would be an amusing story if it wasn't for the fact 10% of Scotland's population were born in England. Whereas in England, it's maybe 1% per capita.

@@hiramabiff2017 Yes, I am. Mainly because I don't bore people to death with xenophobic stories about in-laws, or consider racism "banter." I just have a good time, because that's what we Scots prefer. But if you like, we could banter about England and its new national sports, hate crimes and stabbing kids? (It's only amusing when you're focused on other nations, right)

As a Scot, the use of the "Flower of Scotland" as our national anthem, a song about the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, over 700 years ago, portrays us as being bitter, despite our strong sense of patriotism. Don't get me wrong though, it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, but mass singing in unison tends to have that effect often anyway. I believe that "Auld Lang Syne," a song that celebrates friendship, warmth, reminiscing about the past, and embracing the future, would better embody our nation's spirit compared to the current use of the Flower of Scotland.
@Lylatgames

There isn't any bitterness to the song at all. It's just about how even a wee nation like ours can be strong and brave. It even acknowledges Englands strength /and how it is in the past. It's just a good historical example to use of an underdog achieving something despite overwhelming odds.
