I recently had a letter of Götz in my hand, while researching in the archive. Incredibly delicate handwriting.

@@reactwithhuggs In Augsburg, city archive. He was summoned by the Princebishop of Würzburg, his enemy, to be questioned for his role in the Peasant War. In four pages, with his signet, Götz answered he could not come in time and will show up sometimes later, propably ... a handwriting like a monk, but the signature was the same.

My most beloved quote about him comes from the Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire, who exclaimed when told that Götz and a compagnion of his (who was missing a leg) captured a trail of merchants: "God forbid, if they both had two hands and two legs" :)

My ex-wife is a descendant of a "Raubritter" (knights like Götz, who did their own thing, with a strong touch of crime). Wolf von Blankenhorn was his name. That's probably why i felt robbed, after we split.... 😆

Actually pretty accurate. He´s legend. The knights have had many rights like a toll for traffic on their territory. But later the traders of the cities ignored and even successfully removed these rights. Good for trade, bad for knights. Götz was among the last to resist the new system in which the state has the monopoly for violence. He just kept on to the old law of feuding, which is using violence directly instead of sueing with a lawyer.

Oh yes! My father had a 3D stone slab from Götz back then. Götz's knight's face was modeled on it and underneath was the saying: "Tell him he can kiss my ass!" - in german I wonder where this slab has gone 🤔

Most people don't know Götz at all in Germany. The interest raised in the last years since "Guts" the maincharacter from the Berserk manga has many similarities with him (despite the author had claimed that he didn't know about "Götz"). How about a Berserk reaction xD ??

There is really a music piece Leck mich im Arsch by Mozart, it is visible in KZbin. For the case, you come to Germany, in Jagsthausen the old castle of von Berlichingen is still standing, but you can only visit the small Museumroom, the other rooms are still used by the owner. During Summer, in the Hof/ court?/backyard? the noted theater piece is played, saw this play about 40years ago. As far as i know, Götz is burried in Schöntal monastry.

I actually had to read Goethe's drama about Götz in school BUT as it was a young students' edition, the famous phrase was "beeped out" by three dashes. Of course we all would read it aloud anyway.

During a guided tour of a small historical society, i i visited the castle ( Krautheim??) where this incident really happened. But according to the Guide, the incident was different: Götz was outside, not inside.

What's key to understanding him, is the dominant social change in the time he lived in. Landed nobility significantly lost importance (militarily and politically) and merchants and cities really rose in significance. He fiercly practised old, sometimes no longer existing, rights of his class such as feuding. In the end he was a thug with a bit of outdated legal protection.

Being a Raub-Ritter must be a life full of adventures, fun, danger and wealth. Also getting 81 with this lifestyle is impressiv af. True legend

Well, Götz turned feuding (and murder and extortion) into something like a professional sport… I don’t really think that’s something to celebrate 500 years later, or even worse, to copy… While his disregard to MOST (but not all!) authority is quite impressive, his choleric nature (overlooked by his fans) is off-putting. With regard to his (auto-)biography, there are English translations, e.g.: ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1953730251

Götz is "deftig" - that means hearty, solid, hefty. He's not an invented all good hero. Life is not black and white - it is coulor rich - and sometimes rich in smell. And so are we. Somewhere in the middle, neither good nor bad but vivid. Maybe he is so loved by germans because he acted out the person he realy was.

Siegfried is a much more known knight even though he didt exist.
@1themaster1
@1themaster1 Ай бұрын
There is some evidence that all the tales about Siegfried originate in the historical figure of Arminius, and that his original Germanic name probably was more close to Siegfried than to his Roman name, given that the name of his stepfather (Segestes) was also similar and giving names starting with an S was in general commonplace in their clan. Over time the tales transformed according to their era, progressively gaining more medieval symbolism and imagination, which was generally normal for literature preserved and adapted from Antiquity.
