I remember when the show got removed within the first year there was all sorts of things on the news about people going out and getting pissed in the streets and causing trouble this is what glued our country together

It used to be on Saturday morning, and I think there were cartoons in between the Hey Hey live segments. This was probably going back to the early 80s (maybe even late 70s). Then they later switched it to Saturday night.

Ah Ryan sweetie, you need to watch a whole Hey Hey It's Saturday show to get it , it was a staple in our house every Saturday night and I miss it! Segments on the show I loved Pluck a duck Great aussie joke Red faces Mollies melodrama Then you have the music and international guest who ever was touring our country at the time.

This show was so funny. It was also where all the big stars from around the world came to promote themselves in Australia. There was no internet, Facebook or Twitter back then. The only way to promote was going on this show. There were partly interviewed by a pink ostrich puppet (Ozzie) and a face on a stick (Dickey Knee) They all left loving the crazy show, it was so much fun. The thing that made this show different from so many, especially the so called "late shows" in America is everyone from Superstar to cleaner were always treated as equals.

This wasn't late night TV in Australia, it was prime time Saturday night tv just after the six o'clock news and it held that spot for decades against a host of other shows that bloomed for a short time before falling off the radar, but "hey, hey, it's Saturday" was always a constant.

Its definitely worth watching some of the old shows if you can find them. The entire cast worked like clockwork, without scripts. The humour was classic Aussie working-class, and characters like Dickie Knee, Ozzie Ostrich Plucka Duck were like crazy loveable family members. It would be outlawed today, but remains a favourite for most Aussies who are old enough to remember it.

The sad thing is television stations are there to make money and the young people have it all ,so if they're not watching they won't put the show on and the young people simply weren't intelligent enough to understand the humour

It was a family show that started on a Saturday morning for kids, but it went on for so long that the original cast (including a pink fluffy ostrich) graduated to night time TV 😂😂😂 where the adult humour went right over the heads of the kids and we all sat down and watched it before the different age groups went to bed or went about their Saturday night activities. I can honestly say that I was quite honestly moved to tears with the stupid off the wall antics of the cast. Dicky Knee was the pop up back of a head with a cap on top of a stick with comedic voice over. You should have seen World famous celebrities coping with him popping in and out of a segment. There was a floating Angel (looked like it belonged on top of a Xmas tree) with a voice over. There was “Pluck a Duck” that was like a prize wheel with a guy in a duck costume … you would have had to watch it to see the crazy mayhem. Loved it even when they weren’t what you would call PC.

This is Red Faces, which was a segment on Hey Hey. It was just a bity of fun and people came on and did silly things, as you can see here. Hey Hey was an Aussie must watch on Saturday nights. People held Hey Hey parties and I feel comfortable in saying probably half the population tuned in every Saturday night. I also feel comfortable in saying that there has never been anything like it anywhere else. It was (as they say) the goat. BTW Adelaide (AD-EL-AID) is the capital city of South Australia

There has always been talent shows as I'm sure you're quite aware. but one of the originals was new faces run by Bert Newton where Paul Hogan got his start. Red faces was a send-up of that . Now there was a guy called Bernard King who used to tell everybody they were hopeless so Reds job was to be the mean Bernard King

G'day mate, this was the most popular show on television for 20 years. It was irreverent, add lib, and suited the Australian taste. The "Red Faces" segment was loosely described as a talent show for people that should not be on talent shows. The judges were nice except for Red Symons, who was evil and had the job of ridiculing and destroying the contestants. In this episode, Red was not mean to the two little kids and that made it the highest scoring act. The show was free to air on Channel 9 every Saturday night, hence the name Hey, Hey, it's Saturday.

Technically, Red's job was to go last and usually score low, in order to have final say as to who wins. I've seen a few episodes where he basically vetoed the other judges by scoring someone highly.

Ohh man this was the best show ever! Miss it so much. Grew up NEVER missing an epp. If i could find full epp's I would watch it again. This was just the talent section they used to do. The guy doing the drawings super fast and flashing them up did that throughout the whole show. Everything in the show was done like that on purpose and made it even more brilliant! Ahhhhh SO DAMN GOOD.

This is just barely a glimpse of the great show that lasted over 25 years! The musical talent, comedy and heart of the show was just amazing, it was a great era I miss, and yes some of the wicked humour would be definitely cancelled in today's culture but it's just a part of history now. I loved Plucka Duck and Chook Lotto, Dickie Knee (the blue hatred puppet), Andrew Fyfe the cartoonist, John Blackman the voice over commentator, and Molly Meldrum the music reviews man! Thanks for bringing back such very fond memories!

It’s not a donation if you get paid for it. Here in Aus we give blood for free. We donate our blood out of the goodness of our hearts to help save others. We don’t need to be paid to do the right thing.

I worked on this show a couple of times as a singer.. once backing 'Reba' in the 90's, & again in the Hey Hey band for a more recent comeback special. It's a completely LIVE 2 hour show with lots of crazy segments & guests. Most of it was spontaneous improv, which made it more fun to do. I'd love the show to return, but I can imagine the censors would be all over it now days.

Daryl hosted kids cartoon segment. From memory first as morning segment, possibly Saturdays finally afternoon cartoons. That grew into an evening show that became very popular for the older kids (Adults) with lots of fun.

Try The Jimeoin Show (especially the Cooking Show part), or the original DAAS Dough Anthony All Stars from the 1990s-2000s, or the Umbilical Brothers or Uncle Arthur. All crazy shows/comedy acts that were very popular and off- beat. Australia didn’t have cable/pay TV for ages. Back in the heyday of these shows there were only 3 commercial TV networks, which is why so many Australians were watching the same shows and they were cultural phenomena. Anyone remember watching The Big Gig back on the ABC in the 90s?!

Hey Hey it’s Saturday was a variety show that ran for 20/30!years. It was on every Saturday night 6.30-8.30pm and everyone would watch it either religiously or from time to time. It was very funny it was a “family” show but the jokes were mostly for the adults.

Ahhhh this brings back so many memories. Used to sing for a living way back in the eighties and the group I was in {Confined Quarters} appeared on Hey Hey its Saturday as special guests a couple of times. It was just as crazy being on the show as watching it. Great bunch of people {cast} great fun and great memories. Before I was singing fulltime, we would always watch this having pre drinks before going out clubbing with friends.

One of the stage hands was ‘a bit of an artist’. One day he did a little cartoon of something that occurred on stage and the camera flashed on it. The rest is history. Throughout about 10 years of the show the cartoons appeared!!

Aussies love to 'take the piss' outta everything. Hey Hey ran between 1971 - 1989 and was very popular mostly for not taking itself - or anyone else- too seriously. {You've probably picked up already that this is virtually a requirement for Australian Citizenship. } Red Faces was a segment that was a spoof on actual talent shows - where they'd pick those who would - often deliberately - but just as often not... get up and embarrass themselves on National TV. Hence "Red Faces'. Red Symonds { a TV & Radio presenter & former member of the much loved Skyhooks band } was the Lead 'Mean' Judge - with rotating other celeb judges from week to week. Yes, Adelaide, Capital city of South Australia, is the home of The Crows Football Club. Car Manufacturing in Australia came to a halt when first Holden [2000] & then the Toyota [2017] manufacturing plants were shut down.

Hey Hey was fantastic! It went from a kids’ show every Saturday morning, to an adult show at 8:30 on Saturday nights, because so many adults were hooked on the comedy! These days, Hey Hey it’s Saturday, is controlled by a club style membership and all their stuff is for members only, I think that’s in case they ever bring it back, because they have tried a couple of times, but only in the short term.

Red Symonds was a muso from the band "Skyhooks," notorious for scoring in the 1,2,3's on this segment. James Reyne (sounds like rain) is the front man from the band "Aussie Crawl," Australian Crawl is our own swimming style. Though aussie crawl could maybe mean, a very long countrywide pub crawl. Jimoen is an Irisn born and raised comedian, who sorta decided to stay in oz after performing here. That is your Red Faces judging panel for that night. Hey, Hey started out as a kids show, airing during the day... moved to night tv after it was found to be immensely popular.

PS. I donated blood for most of my adult life and we don’t get paid for it. My sister lived 2 houses from me, my best friend across the road. They both had rare blood groups and I was a Universal Donor which means anyone can have mine. Every time our hospital got low they sent an Ambulance to pick us up. We were supposed to get juice and something small to eat but I didn’t. My sister never had enough blood for herself so they took it anyway and kept her in hospital until she was strong enough to walk. Usually 24 hours of feeding her and liquids was long enough. Once I had to take my 3 year old daughter and she was very intelligent, still is. They put us on high tables and the bag we were filling was underneath us on a hook. She asked what was in my arm and the tube so I told her, then she asked where it was going so I told her to follow the tube to the bag. I heard her scream, she unplugged the tube, stood up with the tube in her hand still pumping my blood out. Her very blonde hair was red and she told me she had saved me before I was empty. Should have see the Nurses face but she told me to bring her. We do that just to help other people. Another Aussie quirky thing we do.

The guy singing at the start was the sax player in a band called OL’ 55, the judges were James Reyne from an Aussie band called Australian crawl, Jimeion is an Irish comedian who lives in Australia and Red Simmons is the ex Guitarist from another band who were big in the seventies called Skyhooks, The segment of the show was called red faces for 2 reasons, one because it meant to be a tongue in cheek talent show, embarrassing, and reason 2 was the only permanent judge was Red Simmons, it was Reds segment to star on because he was a member of the backing band.

Hey, Hey it's Saturday started in October 1971. It was originally a kids TV show on early Saturday mornings showing nothing but cartoons. I was always glued to the TV when it was on. It ran for around 28 years and evolved into an evening comical variety show. 'Red Faces' was a sling off of an actual talent show called 'New Faces'. Hey, Hey was so popular in the evenings that people would have 'Hey, Hey, it's Saturday parties. You would invite your mates over for nibblies and BYO beer and make a night of it and get absolutely pissed as you didn't have to go to work on Sunday. The voiceovers and drawings were done by John Blackman, a very funny bloke. If you want to know more about the show, look for it on Wikipedia. It was one of the best TV shows of it's time in Australia. Some show characters were Ozzie Ostrich, Dickie Knee and Plucka Duck. Mention Hey, Hey, it's Saturday to any Australian 50-60 years old and you're bound to produce a laugh from them. The shows Host was Darryl Somers and his best co-host in my opinion was Jackie McDonald.

It was the highest scoring show because Red never usually gave a score higher than 2. Guy on left * James Reyne - lead singer song writer of band Australian Crawl Centre guy * Jimoin- Awesome comedian from Ireland came here and never left. Guy on right * Red Symonds - lead guitarist from Australian band Skyhooks. Every one of these guys totally Rock!!!

We didn't have Cable TV before Online Streaming - Back then and now our TV is free to air, no licence, nothing! You just have to have a TV and an aerial. Back then (1980s) it was only live so if you missed it you missed it! Now you can watch it live and on recall afterwards too. But I haven't watched commercial TV since the 1990s so I don't know how good it is now. 😁

There were a few car manufacturers in Aus including Mitsubishi and Holden in Adelaide (I think the only one left in Aus now is Ford in Geelong-. The picture that comes up after their performance is meant to be their coach at the time (Malcolm Blight)....

This was a very iconic live TV show in Melbourne Australia for so many years. Comedy. This was red faces...a skit on a serious talent show called New faces. Red Symons is the main judge with 2 celeb guest each week. I have a feeling this show would be lost on younguns of today and most Americans. It is iconically Aussie.hahaha Adel-aide Crows, one of our AFL footy teams. Adelaide is the capital of South Australia.We didn't call it macca's back then.

"Red Faces" was a small segment on a 2.5 hour show called "Hey Hey, It's Saturday", and aside from a few misses, this show was very funny and generally entertaining even though it was unscripted, largely because the talent were mostly quick witted comedians. The segment was named as a parody of a well known talent scouting show that ran on the same network called "New Faces", hosted by Bert Newton, who was good friends with the host of this show, Darryl Somers, having a good-natured joke at his friend's expense, precisely because the talent was pretty terrible. "Red Faces" is also obviously a synonym for embarrassment, giving the segment name a double meaning, but it had a TRIPLE meaning since the head judge (who always had a sarcastic comment and a low score to give) was named Red Symons, and was the only consistent judge week-to-week. As an aside, Red Symons is not only a funny guy, he is also a talented saxophonist who played with the band (the lead singer and guitarist being Wilbur Wilde - cannot for the life of me remember the name of the band though; maybe "Wilbur's Wilds?), and an accomplished journalist. As to why this was the HIGHEST score ever, Red gave the boys a 9, which was unheard of, he generally gave 3 or less. There was another 27 out of 30 once awarded at a live performance in Perth for an act called "Great Expectations", but Red only awarded a 7, hence I think the title of this clip. Having said that, I DID once see Red write on a card "Enough to win", but I think the bar was pretty low on that occasion. Incidently, the other 2 judges on the panel on this occasion were James Reyne, the lead singer and guitarist of a well known band called Australian Crawl, although at this time he was on his solo career, and Jimoein, an ex-pat Irish comedian. Both of them were guests on Hey, Hey that week, and as such were the 2 extra judges besides Red. There were some genuinely and surprisingly good acts that came on Red Faces over the years, usually because they were actually funny. You need to check out "Red Faces Bob Sled Team", and "Red Faces Crash Test Dummies". Another memorable one was a guy dancer who came on, and during the performance his hamstring went. The twang was audible, and it was immediately obvious what had happened. He came back years later at Daryl's invitation to finish his performance. Anyway, go look at some other Red Faces, in spite of the title this wasn't a good representation. Also, there's a LOT going on in the background in terms of doodles, comments, sub-text, etc, so pay close attention or you'll miss 'em. Pause less, listen more 😉😁

Thank you for the blast from the past. I loved this show growing up. Those days there was no such thing as Cable. Those shows were just on free to air and we had 4 channels: 10, 9, 7 and abc(2).

Yes, we went to Hey, Hey parties (on a Saturday night) and watched the show while trying to impress girls. What could go wrong? I recall Harry Connick Jr voicing his upset at a Red Faces act that used black face. America had a bigger issue with it than Australia at that time. This show was live and out of control!

The original skit from decades prior (medical students, I think) was blackface, but fake Michael Jackson in the later version (doctors, I think) was whiteface. For obvious reasons.

That was James Reign the voice of Australian Crawl the immensely important Aussie band and also Jim Owen comedian, who does wonderful TV tours around Australia now. Red Symons is known for giving the lowest score he can and get away with and Red Faces is his vehicle, I don't remember him ever giving over a 4, so this is epic for me.

Grew up in the 80's. in Sydney and yes absolute nostalgia here!!! Fond memories of this extraordinary Aussie program - how times were different back there - one of my high school music teachers actually went ON Red Faces and his act was amazing - he stuck a rubber glove in his trumpet and as he started playing , each finger would expand !!!!! til the whole thing inflated hahaha Couldn't believe that was my year 8 music teacher out of western Sydney!! Anyways, love your channel and brings a tear to the eye as a 40 plus year old having grown up with all this educational entertainment and an insight into the Aussie culture and humour!!!
