Dame Edna Everidge hosted a weekly TV variety show for a while too. She was also one of the most regularly invited Queen's Royal Variety Performers. The word that you are searching for is "poofter", old English. Michael Parkinson is one of the most celebrated interviewers ever. He interviewed the very best celebrities in the 1970-90s on BBC & his interviews with Mohammed Ali (and others) are fabulous.

The “guy” you see at 5:35 is Barry Humphries in normal clothes and character. Les Patterson is one of the many “characters” that he played so successfully. KZbin his more serious videos. He was an alcoholic in the late 1960s and nearly died from the addiction. He survived through self discipline and has spent a lot of time helping alcoholics deal with their situations. He was an erudite, intelligent, creative comedy legend. We Aussies miss him forever. Sadly, we lost him in 2023, aged 89.

You were puzzled by the name Chips Rafferty. He was an actor, the stereotypical Aussie in the 1940s and 50s. The last movie he was in, "Wake in Fright" (1971) is well worth a look. It is a realistic look at the darker side of Australian life at that time. If you watch the movie, that is real beer that Chips is drinking (in every take of the scene).

"poofter" an Australian slang of a Gay person... "Hanging Rock" was a famous Aussie Story and Movie... a piss-up is a slang for party with a ton of booze.... Not everyone realised it was satire. Now we're more sophisticated which is better overall. I'm not nostalgic for the supposedly 'good old days'. If you look now we have Aboriginal people with their own comedy shows and you get to see their take on humour and how they see society and us. They can make jokes at their own expense but it's better if we don't make them for reasons that I shouldn't have to spell out to you. So, nah.

The embarrassed man at 5:34 is the actor/comedian (Barry Humphries) who is actually *playing* Les Patterson in the interview. He's a very refined man who spent the sixties, seventies and eighties lampooning Australian pretensions to The Yartz (the Arts) and Kulcha (Culture). Sir Les is a caricature of a slobbering, disgusting, sexist, grubby man who has risen to a position of influence in the Australian Arts establishment. Les (pronounced Lezz, short for "Leslie") is Barry Humphries' direct attack on a part of the Australian "cultural elite" who thought they were better than the rest of us. He is showing them they are no better, and in fact are just pretentious snobs with a high opinion of themselves while actually being disgustingly vulgar. The dribbling, the yellow nicotine-stained fingers, the sly scratching of his crotch (that you missed) are all part of the schtick. What very few people know is that Barry Humphries actually invented a lot of modern Australian slang - especially some disgusting bits. For example ‘to syphon the python’ and ‘to point Percy at the porcelain’ are both terms for urinating, and "technicolor yawn" is a Barry Humphries expression for vomit.

Ryan, only just this video. Barry Humphries created many characters like Sir Les, grotesque caricatures of us or people we know. If think this Parkinson show was good, his live shows were much much much funnier. If you deliberately came in late, or tried to heckle him, or interacted in any way he would weave you into the show and refer you to throughout his performance. He would usually pick on between six and ten people in the audience, juggling them along his script, he was very mentally sharp to pull that off. He is just a legend.

If I was to talk to a modern Australian the way I talked back then it's very likely they'd struggle to understand me, we've retained most of the accent but about three quarters of the slang has gone I only notice it when I watch an old Australian movie with my overseas born wife who's only lived here thirty years! I don't know what else to say except Barry Humphreys was mirroring back to us Australians aspects of ourselves that were exaggerated but had enough elements of truth to make us squirm in our seats. The performer portraying 'Sir Les Patterson' was the late, great Barry Humphries. The core to the portrayal was that 'Sir Les' was supposed to be the Australian 'Cultural Attache to The Court of St James' in London, when it's hard to imagine anyone less 'cultured'. Not only is his appearance scruffy in the extreme (with drooling too) but he has absolutely no social graces either. Humphries also played 'housewife superstar' Dame Edna Everage. As you might guess, Humphries was himself highly cultured and well-read. (The man shown 'in the audience' at 5:14 is Humphries as he really was.) Both 'Sir Les' and 'Dame Edna' were frequent guests on Michael Parkinson's Saturday-night interview show, alongside showbiz and famous actors of the day. The film reference at 8:40 deliberately plays on 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', a successful and critically acclaimed Australian film.

I only discovered just Ryan Was and saw him watching Les Patterson. Has he discovered Dame Edna yet? I’d love to see his reaction to her.

Ryan another iconic Aussie that was in the same era as Barry Humphrey's in the late 70's early 80's was the character called Barry MacKenzie who did a couple of moves the adventures of Barry Mackenzie. You will get a classic perspective of the Aussie Larricken. have a look see at that character, just asking

Aussies just can't help pulling the piss out of ourselves, Barry Humphries is a classic example. "Pulling the piss" is making fun of ourselves

The guy at 5.36 is Barry Humphries (not dressed up in character). Most of Barry's characters make fun of upper class socialites and politicians people pretending to be upper class.

Hi Ryan I can’t stand that character Les Patterson, but I love him as Dame Edna from Moodie Ponds a suburb of Melbourne. Barry Humphries was born in Melbourne he was a comedian and he was world renown. You need to watch an audience with Dame Edna

Yes, Barry Humphries has just died. His neighbour and best friend in London was Kathy Lette who wrote Puberty Blues with Gabrielle Carey who died just yesterday. It was an incredibly controversial book that was turned into both a film and TV series. It is largely autobiographical and describes two 13 year olds and their sexual experiences growing up in a surf culture. The film had to set them as 16-year-olds to get an M rating. Otherwise, it would have earned an R which is stronger than your R. NC17's tend to earn an R here. Both the film and TV series were superb. Also (and you may need a vpn to watch it) is a 2 part series called blue murder, which is regarded as our best tv series. It was banned from viewing in NSW as a court case was open there for Detective Roger Rogerson (what a name). People there were requesting videotapes from other states. Roger Rogerson has since been convicted of murder for Jamie Gao. It seems it was easier to shoot a drug supplier than pay him. I still have the book this was based on. It's incredibly depressing as basically there is a new murder on each page. The pub fight was basically real. Several of the actors suffered bruises and even broken ribs. The BBQ scene was actually set in Roger Rogerson's actual house while he was in prison for perjury.

I was asked by a friend in the states,, teach me some Aussie stuff, I said Well we like to take the "Micky" out of everyone and everything,, We use humor to make fun of people and our selves in an unkind way! a week later we met up again and I asked him how his Aussies stuff was going?, Ye man, it's been a blast! I've been putting the Micky into everyone!! No Mate,, it's Take the Micky out!! That about sums up the differences . This is the same guy I gave some Aussie slang to,, I told him,, back when I was kid, we uses to say,, Wanna Dink on my Pushy? That's,, Do you want to hop on my bike?, I'll peddle!! he told his family that he just learned some Aussie slang, and proceeded to ask his wife,, You Wanna Dink on my Pushy? but his American twang got in the way and it came out like,, To their Horror! ,,,,,," it sounded more like,,,,, Wanna Di#k on my Puss%. I guess I showed him, how to take the Micky out of someone!!

Americans come from an entirely different universe of humour. When you have to spell it out to them you know that you’re talking a different language.

You need to understand how Aussies view themselves. Nobody can take the piss out of Aussies better than an Aussie and Barry Humphries is the King. BTW, if you found it offensive he succeeded.
