There's a scene in House where the doctors sing karaoke in a bar, "Midnight Train to Georgia". Rich meaty voices; Hugh Laurie and Jesse Spencer too. You begin to realise just how multi-talented these top end actors are. There are numerous other scenes where House plays blues on his piano. I didn't know he could play the guitar too.

Hugh has a huge back catalogue of work that it would be worth investigating. He and Stephen Fry have been best buddies since university (introduced by Emma Thompson) and have worked together on numerous projects. Their sketch shows 'Fry and Laurie' were huge hits. They also did versions of the 'Jeeves and Wooster' stories which I think will remain unbeatable. If you've not seen 'House' you should give an episode or two a whirl, just to see a very different side to Hugh.

That was 100% New Zealander at the end. The key to picking the difference in accent is often the "i" sound. Kiwis say "fush and chups". Once you know that, its usually not too hard to pick the difference. He also referred to jandals, which I believe are flip flops or thongs, depending on where you are from.

A Budgerigar is an Australian bird commonly known as a Budgie. They are kept by people around the world as pets and have been bred to within an inch of their lives since been discovered here 200 years ago. They form some of the largest flocks of birds in the world, mostly over our deserts. And Simon, in the Red Chair? As an Aussie I picked him as a Kiwi the minute he opened his mouth! You should compare the NZ and Australian accents. They are similar but, even to my Aussie ear. The Kiwis and South African accents have similarities that we in Australia don’t share.

I went to see him live when he toured New Zealand. He was wonderful! The band was incredible and I have two albums. Gonna go listen to them now. Bill Murray went musical too, and I saw him a few years ago too - not blues, more classical. That was weird but good! I have to respect these creatives have reached a place in their careers that they can take some risks and play with what they really want to do and spring off their earlier fame and tour as far away as New Zealand :)

In the later series of House, Hugh Laurie often ends the episode as Dr House reflectively playing music on the piano or guitar while alone at home. He plays all styles of music, classical, jazz, blues, pop. Joel, you should really see some episodes of House, even if it’s not for a reaction but just for your own entertainment. Medical drama sprinkled with dark humour - some of the best television that exists.

As you like Stephen Fry, you should look at some of the series called A Bit of Fry and Laurie, a series of comedy sketches which aired between 1987 and 95. The two met while at Cambridge in 1980, with Emma Thompson as a mutual friend. Laurie is an Old Etonian and took his degree in Archeology & Anthropology. Fry's is in English Literature, and Thompson has a Masters in English.

How sweet that you should say, "This man is an artist, too?… I just thought that he was an actor." Well, an actor IS an artist already, because acting IS an art. I am an actor AND a poet, myself; and yet so many people are astonished that "Oh, you're not JUST an actor? You do something else as well?!" Yep, we do not all have a single allotment. • And 'budgie' is simply an abbreviation for a budgerigar.

Hello Joel. Had you heard the phrase "budgie smugglers" and got mixed up? I used to have budgies as a kid. I got some later because my girlfriend liked the little parakeets, especially watching the baby ones, never having had anything like that. One found a way to call the dog, which found a way to reach the cage and kiss it. I assumed you had seen pictures of flocks of these birds in the outback on your new channel. Also, Hugh Laurie is one person I did tune in to watch on Graham Norton's show, as he is very talented, so I had seen this on TV for a change.
