I think Edward I ordered the chair made ca 20 years into his reign, to "house" the Scottish "Stone of Destiny" and named it after Edward the Confessor. So his son Edward II must have been the first king to be crowned on it.. I guess..

Hi Steve . Queen Mary is a very interesting person , she was the first Royal to realise that the Monarchy needed modernising and that was 100 years ago . Queen Elizabeth II saw Queen Mary as a mentor and learned a lot from her .

Mary was George V wife and consort. As you're probably aware this coronation day was originally intended for Edward VIII (George VI older brother). But Edward abdicated (resigned) from the throne in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, a American twice divorced woman from Baltimore, whom the British government and other high ups didn't approve of. When Edward abdicated, his next brother in age Albert, who was The Duke of York, immediately became King taking the regnal name of George VI in honour of his father George V who had died in January 1936. After the Abdication Edward who was made Duke of Windsor by his brother fled into exile, and married Mrs Simpson in France and was mostly shunned by his family for the rest of his life.

She wasn't a consort. She was Queen in her own right (not like Mer Majesty RIP) but like the Queens mother (Elizabeth) she was Queen too (Even though she wasn't Monarch) I think Consort came about for Prince Albert & Queen Victoria. (Much like the Duke of Edinburgh). Because a King is always higher than a Queen. Camilla is a divorced woman. Spoiled goods can never been Queen. Slight difference

My grandad bought a TV for the Queen’s coronation in 1953, all the neighbours came in to watch the ceremony on this tiny little box. (I wasn’t around then!) If you watched any film in the UK, you had to stand for the national anthem before any film was shown in cinemas until the 1960s.

Nobody had television in 1937. A lot of people in the UK bought there first television in 1953 to see the coronation of his daughter - Elizabeth II, but even then it was only a proportion of the population who could afford to by a television. This is a film which would have been shown at the cinema.

Incorrect. The BBC television service began on 2nd November 1936 and they showed the coronation procession at Hyde Park Corner. It is true that cameras weren't allowed inside the abbey in 1937, though radio was.

Lots of British people bought TVs for Queen Elizabeth II ‘s Coronation. Many people crowded round the tiny TVs in family and neighbours houses. My father managed to take photos from the TV of the Crowned Queen in the Gold Coach. He printed the photos and coloured them by hand using oil paints. I still have one in an album.

King George V (who was our King during WW1) Was married to Princess Mary of Teck who became Queen Consort. On George V death, the oldest son, known as David but who chose Edward VII as his regnant name, abdicated the throne so that he could marry Wallis Simpson (long story but worth researching further). George VI was married to Elizabeth Bowes Lyon who became Queen consort on his accession and was known as Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother after his death. She lived to be 101 years old and hers is another story you might find interesting. Technically she should have been called the Dowager Queen but at that time Queen Mary was still alive and held that title. George and Elizabeth had two daughters, Elizabeth, our late Queen, and Margaret Rose. Princess Margaret had a very interesting and colourful life, also worth a look. I'd like to thank you for taking such an interest in all things British, and doing so with such enthusiasm and respect.

A queen will always be a queen even after the king dies. Queen Mary died in 1953 so for a brief period there were three queens alive in the U.K. Queen Elizabeth II the reigning monarch, Queen Mary who was wife to George V and Queen Elizabeth, the wife of George VI who lived for the entire 20th century and died aged 101 in 2002.

Incidentally, the editor of this film was Sir Malcolm Campbell - motoring legend, land and water world speed record holder at various times, journalist and father of Donald Campbell who broke world land speed and water speed records in the same year, who died sadly at his last water speed attempt in the famous Bluebird on Coniston Water in the Lake District in 1967. His body was only found in 2001. The film about the events is sad but very interesting.

People didn't have tvs in those days. These were newsreels that were produced and shown in movie theatres. Many of these were played before feature films along with coming attractions. Some productions companies such as British Pathe even had their own cinemas to ONLY show newsreels.

Queen Mary was consort to King George V who died in 1936. His heir was King Edward VIII who abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson and was succeeded by his brother who took the name George. Queen Mary died in March 1953 but left instructions that her granddaughter's coronation was not to be delayed

I have never seen this before and loved it. Thanks. John Logie Baird, a Scotsman, developed the idea of television. He suffered with ill health and moved to Hastings on the South Coast of England. He demonstrated his invention to The Royal Institution, in London on 26th January 1926. The BBC began broadcasting experimental 'programmes' during August 1932 from Alexander Palace, London. Regular broadcasts were put out by the BBC from 1936. Broadcasts were suspended during the war (1939-1945) until 1946. It was the BBC's decision to televise the Coronation in 1953 that created an enormous demand for TV sets. The age of television was born. (I am sure there is someone here that can put me right if I am wrong, but I think he went on to develop colour tv, and later, a fully electronic colour set.) He died in his 50's in Bexhill, (Sussex Coast). Truly a clever man, one that changed our world. From memory I think Queen Victoria arranged a marriage between her eldest grandson with Mary of Teck. Unfortunately, that grandson died of influenza. Victoria asked Mary if she would agree to marry his brother instead. Arranged marriages were a 'thing' in the Aristocracy - particularly then. She married King George V and became Queen Mary. He was a gruff man, and she was very shy. They came to love one another, and she became one of the royal family's greatest assets during King George V's reign. Before her marriage the public named her 'The Peoples' Princess' long before the very popular Princess Diana of our time was given that name. It was Queen Mary, who instilled in our late Queen Elizabeth II, the role of duty, service and dedication. Like Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth was a quiet, serious and shy person.

For most of us, Charles’ coronation will be the only one we’ll ever see live. So, although Charles wants a short ceremony at 73, I don’t see why he can’t go to Buckingham Palace - or Clarence House if the electrics are still being rewired at BP - put his feet up and have a glass of something for a while whilst the rest of us watch the Canadians, Australians, Kiwis, etc etc ride and march past. I hope we have our Queen of Tonga moment. Salote III waved enthusiastically at the crowds in the rainwhilst this tiny little man

Queen Salote was an imposing figure at 6’3” and was so happily waving that she was adored by the crowds. Whilst watching the ceremony, Noel Coward was asked who the man in the carriage was and famously responded, “Her lunch”.

Hi Steve, Yes how cool to see Queen Elizabeth as The little Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret. Yes there has only been one Abdication in Royal history and it sent shockwaves through the Royal House, Abdication is a dirty word to the Royals. Yes although King Charles coronation is going to be scaled down, it is still going to be huge. Queen Elizabeth’s coronation cost £46.000.000 in todays money with over 8000 guests assembled in Westminster Abbey, they had to build up stands and seating areas to accommodate everyone, this time the coronation will only have 2000 guests which is the number it can regularly accommodate, also the coronation ceremony is Medieval in origin and takes 4 hours, King Charles and Queen Camilla are going to be crowned within the framework of a normal Church of England communion service taking around an hour and 30 minutes, it is also going to have much much less spent on it, it will still be a massive event with all the usual spectacle and pageantry of Britain.

TV was first thought of in the 19th century. It was invented by a mix of British German and Hungarian engineers. Was still being perfected in the 1930s, which was of course interupted by WW2 in Europe. This gave the US the advantage of tv in private homes from 1939 onwards. Most people in the UK and Europe were not really able to afford tvs until the 1950s and most getting one in the 1960s.

PM led a interesting life and was quite wild and her private life was mostly in the Caribbean island of Mustique, where there was never a dull moment (allegedly). Interesting to see the buildings of London all blackened with soot from all the coal fires that were used in those days. A massive clean up of London's buildings started in the 1970's. It was wonderful to see such beautiful buildings emerging from the grime.

Near the beginning of this video there was a mention of the Earl Marshal of England. His job is hereditary, and he is ultimately responsible for organising Coronations and State Funerals. He is the Duke of Norfolk, and he is officially the top noble in England. His family have held the job of Earl Marshal since 1320! Rather unfortunately, the other day he got caught using his mobile phone while driving. Since there were already points on his licence, he was banned from driving, I think for six months. Most inconvenient when you're organising a Coronation!

Just as an aside I wondered if the editor of the film was this same man: Major Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE (11 March 1885 - 31 December 1948) was a British racing motorist and motoring journalist. He gained the world speed record on land and on water at various times, using vehicles called Blue Bird, including a 1921 Grand Prix Sunbeam. His son, Donald Campbell, carried on the family tradition by holding both land speed and water speed records. From 1940 to 1942 he commanded the military police contingent of the Coats Mission tasked with evacuating King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and their immediate family from London in the event of German invasion. Queen Mary (1867-1953) was the mother of George VI - and the Queen Consort of King George V - who was father of both the by-then abdicated King Edward VIII whom had now been given the title of Duke of Windsor; King George VI - who as the king's second son had previously held the title of Duke of York and so his elder daughter had been born Princess Elizabeth of York, with the same status as today's Princess Beatrice, the elder daughter of Prince Andrew, who also held the title of Duke of York - as is the tradition for the second sons of Sovereigns (assuming it is vacant). Born in 1988, Beatrice already had two male cousins - Princes William and Harry of Wales when she was born, unlike her grandmother, who had been born first. But perhaps that helps explain the improbability of Elizabeth ever becoming Queen in her own right, at the time of her birth in 1926! The first Dukes of Gloucester and Kent were also sons of George V and Queen Mary - the fathers of today's 2nd dukes, who were first cousins of QEII. As grandchildren in the male line, they and their siblings were also born as HRH and Prince or Princess of their father's territorial designation, i.e., Gloucester and Kent.... Incredibly, King George V had also been Duke of York, and Queen Mary had originally intended to marry his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, who would have become Prince of Wales and then King, had he not died at the age of 28 - officially of typhoid. (He was known to frequent a notorious illegal homosexual brothel and is believed to have been present during a police raid there in 1889. While he was not charged with any offences nor sent to prison with hard labour - unlike most of the others who had been there, his copy book was well and truly marked - and so, we might draw our own conclusions...). Queen Mary was in fact a second cousin once removed of both princes prior to her marriage - as Princess May of Teck, a great-granddaughter of King George III through his fourth son - while the crown passed to his two elder sons (George IV and William IV), and thence to the daughter of his late third son, who became known as Queen Victoria - the last Queen in her own right prior to Elizabeth II. The Teck family was one of several deprived of their name and titles in the Titles Deprivation Act of 1917, which set out who can and can't be princes and princess and use the honorific HRH, amongst other things. Apart from the additional provision made by Elizabeth II in 2013 to the effect that all children of the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Catherine) could use these titles (it had just been the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales), this remains in force today, though it is widely expected that King Charles will change it again, in order to reduce the size of the Royal Family. Queen Mary's surviving brother and her nieces - all of whom had been born as Princes and Princesses of Teck, were now demoted to Lord / Lady (First name) Cambridge, although her brother - who was married to the daughter of Queen Victoria's youngest son and therefore a princess in her own right - was granted the non-royal Earldom of Athlone, the very next day. Returning to the 1937 Coronation, Queen Mary attended to demonstrate extra assurance to the public, that the new King George VI had plenty of support, as he was known to be rather nervous and had a speech impediment. Dowager Queens had not normally attended the Coronations of their children, prior to this. Also present in the 1937 Coronation photographs - and in the front row of the Royal Gallery immediately next to Queen Mary, was Queen (Consort) Maud of Norway, in her robes as a Princess of the United Kingdom - she was in fact the King's only surviving aunt, born as Princess Maud, the youngest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, who reigned from 1900 - 1910, between Victoria and Maud's brother, George V. Three of Queen Victoria's children (Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and his surviving sisters, The Princesses Louise and Beatrice; plus at least ten of her grandchildren were therefore present at this - the third Coronation for the fourth new king, of the 20th Century!

The Queen Maud that was mentioned in the commentary was originally known as Princess Maud of Wales. She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria through her eldest son who was the Prince of Wales for many years before being crowned King Edward VII. Maud married the King of Norway, Haakon VII, and became his Queen. Victoria’s 9 children and subsequent grandchildren married into the Royal Houses throughout Europe, most notably Germany, Greece, Norway, Russia, Romania, etc. as well as into the British and European aristocracy. One of the nine children was Prince John who died young due to being the first recipient of the mutant gene that causes haemophilia which originated with Queen Victoria. It is carried by the female line but manifests through the male line. It probably resulted from Victoria and her husband Prince Albert being cousins. The most notable sufferer was the Tsar’s son, Alexis, murdered with the rest of his family in the Russian revolution. His mother, the Tsarina Alexandra, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria through her own mother, Victoria (mother also to Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany) and that’s why he inherited the mutant gene. I am really enjoying your reaction videos and am extremely impressed at how much you’ve already absorbed about who’s who in the Royal Family and how it all hangs together. The Movie Tone films were made for cinema audiences. Queen Mary, May of Teck, was Elizabeth's grandmother and was Queen consort. Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth Bowes Lyons was also consort and not Queen in her own right. Queen Mary and the King were the first Royal couple to extensively tour the country and be a visible presence to their subjects. If Mary visited your home and took a keen interest in the family heirloom, you were obliged to let her have it. This earned her the reputation of a kleptomaniac. She's one of favourite royals. She once was a guest of an aristocrat staying in his home while he was on safari. When he returned he found that she had trees cut down from near her window and the ivy removed and he was quoted as saying "Will somebody get this bloody woman out of my house?"

Queen Mary was the wife (Queen Consort) of King George V. In one of the carriages was Queen Maud of Norway, the Queen Consort of Norway, who was one of George V’s sisters. George V’s eldest son was Edward VIII, who abdicated. George VI was Edward VIII’s younger brother, and so became king.

Steve. the robes that are tradition for all nobility have ermine fur embellishment. Ermine is the fur of the stoat, which turns white in winter, having been a rather boring brown for the rest of the year. The black detail is the tip of the tail. The coronets worn by the nobility are of different designs denoting their ranks. If you come to visit us it's well-worth going to the Tower of London to see the Crown Jewels. I've seen them. They are the world's most valuable jewel collection, worth many millions, and magnificent.

Actually the BBC television service had started in London in November 1936, but very very few people would have had TVs, and I don’t think they had the ability to do outside broadcasts in 1937! This is a movie newsreel. Most people didn’t have TVs until the 1950s (my parents got their first tv in April 1958, about 5 months before I arrived - they paid 81 guineas (£85.25 in todays’ money, but about £2000 in todays’ purchasing power!) for a black and white tv with a 14” screen). Queen Maud of Norway, who was mentioned in the report, was King George VI’s aunt (she was the daughter of King Edward VII) - the Norwegian royal family are the closest relatives to the Windsors, if all the living descendants of Elizabeth II, George VI, and George V were to die (there are about 70 of them) then the King of Norway would be the next in line to the throne.

Queen Mary is King George’s mother and Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother. A Queen doesn’t reign unless she inherits directly from her mother or father. So, Queen Mary (of Teck ) was a Queen Consort. Her mother was a Duchess of Cambridge. Queen Mary’s father had a title (Duke of Teck) but no money. British nobles sometimes dreaded a visit from Queen Mary as she would covet their stuff and make it obvious that she’d quite like to be given the object of her desire by her hosts. Who can refuse the Queen? Word got about and apparently nobles used to hide their valuables away rather than leave them out on display to catch the eye of Queen Mary.

You will have noticed that there was very little coverage of the actual ceremony. This was because it was considered a religious event and the authorities were concerned that people might watch it while munching on sweets (candy), cuddling in the backseats, or otherwise while behaving in a disrespectful manner. The first coronation ceremony to be shown in full was the late Queen's, and there was a big row over that. Once again the establishment was against it being televised or shown in cinemas, but Prince Philip fought to have it shown. Even so, the actual anointing with holy oil, which is the most sacred part of the ceremony, was done under a canopy to keep it hidden from the cameras. We will have to wait and see whether King Charles decides to go fully public or not.

An easy way to remember who the reining monarch is, the Monarch has a Regnal number and the consort doesn't, for example Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll and Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh or His Majesty King Charles lll and Queen Camilla. The Queens sister was call HRH the Princess Margaret Rose, Countess of Snowdon

Absolutely. It's long but is absolutely brilliant. The world and his wife wanted to be at Horseguard's that evening. The military parade went very much to time. The parade of the 'general public' was, to say the least, somewhat less organised!🤣 It comes in 3 parts on KZbin. Queen Mary was queen consort to George V. Queen Alexandra was consort to King Edward VII. King Edward VIII abdicated and was unmarried at his abdication. His brother Prince Albert the became king, taking the regnal name of George VI.

Queen Mary’s mother was a granddaughter of King George III, her mother was Princess Mary Adelaide and her father was Francis, Duke of Teck, an Austrian nobleman. So King George V was the actual King and his wife was Queen Consort, but that term wasn’t much used in those days, she was usually just known as Queen Mary when her husband acceded to the throne on the death of his father King Edward VII.

That title has returned to use because of sentiments surrounding the late queen and of course Camilla’s not so colorful past , same happened in 1902 to princess alexandra who didn’t want to be known as queen consort and wouldn’t allow to be referred to as the queen until the old deceased Queen Victoria had been burried

I always think that anyone with ancestors originating from the British Islands, has a perfect right, to claim British history as theirs, since their forebears contributed to that long history, whether in England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales. When George V died Prince Albert assumed name George V1 Queen Mary became Dowager Queen his wife became Elizabeth Queen Consort and his daughter Princess Elizabeth heir apparent untill his death then Queen Elizabeth 11.

She lived a long life and out lived her son, she died 24th March 1953 so lived over a year into her granddaughters reign, only missing her coronation by a few months. Edward abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson who was, at the time divorced 2 times and was in process of a 3rd. Her fmr spouses were still alive. The British monarch is also head of the Church of England, meaning they couldn't marry someone who's fmr spouses were alive. Meaning Edward had no choice BUT to abdicate in favor of Prince Albert, Duke of York and thus King George VI.

You would know if the Queen marries ie: Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth there husbands would be called prince as in prince Albert (Victoria's husband) Prince Phillp (Elizabeth's husband) meaning that the royal line cimes from the female and so the husbands cannot be called King as that would make them higher then the blood line of the Queen.

Queen Mary was only a consort and not a monarch therefore her position legally and constitutionally would not have been in competition with her son. It's her son the king who has the power. Interestingly sometimes ex queen consorts are reluctant to let go of their influence and power. This happened when Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother didn't want to give up her queenly influence so The Queen Elizabeth 2nd had to banish her from court to live away from her and Phillip in a home of her own.
