I was a Phys Ed teacher at a fairly large secondary school in South Auckland several years back when we had a school visit of several American high school teachers who were looking at the way we were dealing with mixed race issues and teaching in less desirable socio-economic parts of the city. The Phys Ed teacher, or "Coach" who was with them was interested to see the school had six rugby teams, from the elite 1st 15 down to a rather lowly 6th 15. He asked me why we had six rugby teams. He was a bit surprised when I replied that there weren't enough kids interested in playing to fill a 7th 15. Apparently in the States if you aren't good enough to make the school team you're a spectator whereas in NZ everyone who wants to play will have an opportunity to. There have been a few cases where someone who was not good enough at school to make the top team got really interested by having the opportunity to play and after school went on to excel at club level.

Nz were playing with 14 basically the entire time thanks to Sam cane (the worst captain in all blacks history) and South Africa were playing with 15 + the refs. And last time they met in a final the South Africans gave the entire all blacks team food poisoning. And yet in both games with Nz having a major disadvantage, we still only went down by less than a try in both. Also, get ready for the all blacks to win 3 in a row with razor coming in as head coach

Firstly: The Haka is NOT a dance. Although that's the closest word that English has to define it. Rather it's a 'challenge' and whilst you could you argue is done to intimidate the opposition, it's actually also done as a sign of respect towards the opposition. Ie....."we are warriors and we see you as warriors too" Source - I'm an Aotearoan Māori ...even if my name doesn't suggest so lol. Loving your reactions towards the game bro. Keep watching and and hint.....keep watching The All Black's, they are by far THE most entertaining team in the world by a large margin.

It's our national sport and New Zealanders are proud players of it just like you Americans are with your American Football. Win or lose, the All Blacks are the most humble and respected Rugby Union team in the world. No other World Champion team has come close to earning that respect, no other team will. They're not the perfect Rugby team because the perfect Rugby team doesn't exist, but when it comes to skill the AB's reign supreme, they're not the biggest nor are they the most athletic players in the world, but the class of Rugby they play is what excites their fans and threatens their opposition. It's no wonder International clubs get all excited if by chance they're victorious over the All Blacks, they should be, the All Blacks aren't the easiest team to win against in the sport and with a rep so huge in the world, victory against the All Blacks is indeed a rare moment and all the more reason for a celebratory event, to finally release the joys, the anguish and frustrations, the relief of which have been smothering them.

High schools in New Zealand are called high schools. You start attending at roughly 13 years old and attend for five years (well, the last one isn't manditory, but if you want to go straight into university afterwards rather than waiting or going to a polytech instead for a couple of years you need the qualifications from that last year). Properly speaking you have Primary, Secondary (highschool), and Tertiary (university, polytech, etc) education. The boundary between primary and secondary (and particularly where you go for the years roughly corrisponding to being 11 and 12 years old) is a bit fuzzy. Out in the country they're usually part of primary, in the city they're often split off as their own thing as Intermediate schools, and sometimes, usually when dealing with private or somehow specialised schools, those years are integrated into the Secondary part. A collage is generally a secondary educational institution (high school) that includes those two years as well.

9:00 onwards. yeah, he kicked the ball. you can do a wee kick, then chase it, or a big one, but big ones are usually picked up one the backs, a wee chip 'n' chase is not a bad way, as you see here, to get some space, cannot tackle someone without the ball, so he cannot be touched, but the other team can also get the ball. if your team touches the ball behind your line, it's like a reset to the game. it's a risk, but when it pays off, as you saw, he scored the try.

About Haka and what other team could do, I don't think it would be accepted without conditions. But i like to argue that at least one country could have their own thing, because it has a lot of historical similarities with the haka. Scotland could play the bagpipe. Both haka and bagpipe choir are deeply linked to the history of each countries AND both have roots with war and battles, and encouraging your own or striking fear to the others. I would be amased to see Scotland players chant and a few play the bagpipe!

When NZ Lost to ENG in the RWC '19 semi-final, John Mitchell, ex All Blacks coach was advising ENG and was present in their coaches box during the Game. NZ Pop. is unable to generate the money needed to retain top players and coaches in the Pro Era, hence the inevitable decline.The All Blacks are part of NZs international Identity, They must remain competitive, I believe Govt. financial assistance is required. $300-500 million Per Annum. 8 mins, NOTHING STOPPING OTHER TEAMS. All of the Pacific Islands perform variations of the Haka, but there is an open invitation to reciprocation. This is an opportunity to highlight national culture and identity. To be fair, also the reason we will likely never see the English respond. Just picture, a line-up of impressive physical specimens of human perfection performing the Haka... and a bunch of over-grown pasty-faced POMs donning bells and starting a Morris dance. It just... maybe just me, but I just don't see it holding the same gravitas. Give it a go though lads, laughter being the best medicine, you could accidentally cure cancer!

Be sure to catch the RWC final this weekend between NZ and South Africa. No matter who wins, you won't be disappointed. Up the All Blacks! You raise a good point about the ABs not winning every match not being a bad thing. I think it's inevitable anyway, with so many of NZ's rugby talent (players and coaches) choosing to ply their trades in other countries, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches up and even surpasses us - it's already been happening over the last several years. Hell, if the US decided tomorrow to put even half of the resources into US rugby that they do into the NFL, the US could theoretically win the next Rugby World Cup! An exaggeration, but you get it. Also, like others have suggested in the comments, do check out some footage of Jonah Lomu. RIP big man.

As an old b____ I recall the days of non professional rugby when all black players had to hold down a full time job and train in evenings or weekends. I recall the toughness of these players, one who with a body cast on continued to turn up to training and another who broke his arm during a game and rather than miss the rest of the play hid his injury and played on to the end. With these men as examples, among many more, is it any wonder that rugby has assumed a major part of the Kiwi identity.

It is a mighty impressive record over the years for sure what Brazil is to footie is what the AB’s are to egg chasing but it must really grate them that that dominance in the big show belongs to Springboks and that gap is growing I was at Twickenham for that game before the WC and they got run over big time by South Africa and I honestly thought the fear factor had gone and they were going to go the same way in rugby that Man Utd has gone in footie Didn’t turn out that way they played great against Ireland in that epic qrtr final and in the final they almost caught the Boks even with 14 men It was better than in 2019 when they were well beaten by England in the semi But when it comes to the Show , the Boks are batting .500 and the ABs .300

For all the national interest and enthusiasm for rugby in Aotearoa/NZ, there simply aren't enough positions for every coach or player to fill. Those who are "good enough" but not for the All Black roles, will take contracts to play or coach overseas. This keeps them fit at international level and performances may get you noticed by the All Black scouts who monitor their performances for those countries. If you're luck enough, you could get a call up. You were right, when we dominated the game for so long it became a foregone conclusion we'd win. If we were beaten, it meant the opposition "lifted" themselves and I always cheered for the underdog. Cheers.

The USA has a rugby team because I saw them when they came over and played England. They got trounced but you have to start somewhere. Italy started the same way and now have a side to compete with the best. So does Romania. They did not mention the world class teams of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

There's a great book called "legacy" that was written by a guy called james kerr in 2013 amazing book about the all blacks culture and is a good representation of why the all blacks are as good as they are it goes far beyond just being good at the game, there work ethic, there maori heritage, there mentality towards how they handle there losses, how they hold each other accountable inside and outside of the sport and the brotherhood they have in all aspects of there lives its a huge catalyst as to why they are the most winningest team of any sport in the world. I appreciate your reaction to our national sport.

Other countries are offering some NZ players much higher salaries to come and play or coach for them, which as a small country, we can't compete with, hence why so many are moving overseas.

Also one of the reasons for less young guys playing rugby is the historic legacy of head injuries (concussions etc) sustained during rugby. Lots of parents are starting to steer their kids to sports with less chance of head injuries.

I've always admired New Zealand's efforts to make amends for the way white settlers treated the indiginous population. Their present reverence for Maori culture may be too little too late, but it's something the USA could and should learn from. Can Americans imagine having a national anthem principally in a language of the Native American people? No, me neither.
@gallowglass2630
@gallowglass2630 Жыл бұрын
The Native Americans didn't speak a single language which native american language would you chose.They were 18 different language families and some of those had 20 languages within the family.The maori only spoke one language,don't think the apaches navajo would feel represented by cherokee or lakota.Its actually totally different situation maoris make up 15% of the NZ population and there is immigration from other polynesian cultures which unlike the native americans tribes are very culturally similar. The maori themselves are actually fairly recent migrants as NZ was unhabited until the 14th century.Not saying they have it easy and don't suffer discrimination but they are in a much stronger position than the native americans who were absolutely swamped

@@gallowglass2630every Māori tribe did speak different but similar dialects. There wasn’t just 1 Māori language. There is just one now te reo but that was because 30 years ago you’d get a caning by your teacher. There’s only 1 Māori language now due to the government trying to make amends for its history. So what your saying is still false

In Australia AFL, Rugby League, Cricket and Soccer are the most popular sports whereas Rugby Union is 5th and then even it’s on a downward trend in regards to kids being interested in playing and the public attending matches are less and less every year. Whereas in NZ its their national sport and so doesn’t have to compete with other sports.

the video he was watching wasn't entirely accurate, after high school/college, we have multiple Domestic Rugby competitions, with Super rugby at the top, we also have the NPC, Heartland Championship & club competitions (which has 520 affiliated clubs), & then multiple National teams, that represent NZ, this include University, Under 19s, 20s, 21s, the Sevens Teams, Heartland XV, Black Ferns, Maori All Blacks, the Junior All Blacks, & the All Blacks. I mean it is not a straight shot from Ripper, to College, to Super Rugby, then the All Blacks.
