Joel check out "Land of Hope and Glory " last night of the Proms. Also check out "Jerusalem" last night of the Proms The history of Rule Britannia is misread by a lot of young People they think it is about Britain's former Empire Rule. It's not anything like that at all. Rule Britania was written about a time when the Barbary Pirates used to regularly land on the shores of Britain and forcibly take the town's people from coastal towns and villages onto their ships and press them into slavery. Then transport them to the middle East and North Africa. When Britain Grew our Royal Navy to become the Largest in the world Our Navy could then protect the shores of the British Isles, the lines in the songs chorus "Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never never never shall be slaves!" Because the Barbary Pirates could no longer take Britons from the British isles as slaves due to the British Royal Navy putting a stop to this practice of the Barbary Pirates

OK, can we just all agree that Sarah Conolly slayed that song! She was singing UNMIKED in Royal Albert Hall and was filling the entire building. If you watch some of the other Last Night videos, most of the singers use headset microphones. Sarah does it on her own. Awesome. I remember playing Rule Britannia at high school football games. I had not idea there even were words to it, much less someone who could nail all the 18th century performance practices as well. It's also beyond cute when the children hang their sign over the balcony railing. And lest anyone think that her wearing a naval uniform is some sort of transgender solidarity thing, there is a long tradition of women singing male roles (especially when the character is supposed to be a boy whose voice hasn't changed yet) in opera back to at least the time of Mozart. (There is also a tradition of male castrati singing in opera, but that was back in Baroque times and has nothing to do with this performance). And JPS, there are lots of videos of Last Night at Proms, and they are all worth watching.

In context- the bbc tried to remove this song from the last night of the proms. Apparently it’s references to Britons never being slaves was offensive because at some point Britain had taken part in the slave trade… like literally every single nation and race on the planet… but unlike most nations and races on the planet the British actively sought to end it and were often in conflict with nations and colonies that continued the disgusting institution. Be proud, Joel, that of all nations on the planet though very few fought an actual civil war that ripped apart their country and sent hundreds of thousands of people of one race to their death to unslave another race. Slavery does continue to exist - in fact sheer numbers wise there are more slaves today than when this song was written. But they are not in the west (and when slavery is detected here in the western world it is decried as the abomination that it is).

Actually, ‘Britania’ (if the word existed), could also legitimately be pronounced ‘BritAAHnia’! But that would be just for posh people only.

For at least 7 years I attended the Last Night at the Proms in Hyde Park with a group of 5 to 7 families together with our champagne picnics, plus usually about 70,000 other people all waving flags from all over the world, bloody fantastic and made me very proud to be British. 2009 was definitely one of the better years.

I recently discovered this song was to celebrate the ascendancy/supremacy of the Royal Navy on the seas which put an end to pirates from North Africa selling Europeans into slavery in the Ottoman Empire.

I performed during the proms season, when I played as 1st violin with the National Youth Orchestra, between 1988 and 1993, and playing in that season at the Royal Albert Hall was a phenomenal experience. Some of the best experiences of my life. Something I would recommend is the performance of Barber's Adagio for strings, a couple of days after 9/11, which coincided with the last night of the proms. It was a truly moving experience and showed our own solidarity with our American friends

To get context, you need to react to how British ended slavery around the world 🌎
