It has a cult following I'm from England I stumbled on it, was shown I think bbc 2 not main channel, now I still watch it on virgin channel 162 bbc Scotland Friday night repeat Sunday. Just like fraisier still game in my circles they were never talked about much but I bloody cannot get enough of them both. People would always wax lyrical about friends but never heard much talk on the street about frasier&still game. There loss.

I'm already laughing anticipating the reaction to the pub scene, I just know it's going to be unreal. The kid said 'fancy a game of Gran Turismo' It wasn't a huge show across the UK as it was only broadcast in Scotland at the time though as the years went by it made it onto the tv channels that show re-runs of old shows and a lot more people became aware of it. The whole thing came to an end with a sell out live show in Glasgow that ran for well over 200 shows. It seems like yesterday but it's quite a while back now. The bit with Isa going round the houses to tell the story is typical of how Ford Kiernan (who plays Jack) and Greg Hemphill (Victor), wrote the show to give everyone a fair shout of screen time. The writing and acting is hugely under rated, they weave comedy with sadness in a way few other shows manage to do.

@@martindunstan8043 You're right it just didn't go nationwide right from the start. The first three series were only broadcast in Scotland (2002-2004). It was big in Scotland but had more of a cult following in England. I got into it after a Scottish work colleague lent me a DVD set of a sketch show called Chewin the Fat in which the Jack and Victor characters were born. I must admit I am very impressed by how you are coping with the Scottish accents. A lot of English people have massive difficulties translating them. And I will echo what everyone else has said - as brilliant as it is in this first series it gets much better as it goes along!

There's a thing on UK TV called Christmas specials. All the best TV shows gets a special episode at Christmas that is Christmas themed. It's a way of rewarding the show and the viewers with an extra episode for the season. Scotland has an addition to that and it is the Ne'erday episode. Still Game had a "New Years/Hogmanay" episode every season it was on. They air on New Years Eve. Its a tradition for BBC Scotland to air a comedy show. Going back through the years there's Scot Squad, Still Game which spun off from Chewin' the Fat, Only an Excuse, Rab C Nesbitt which spun off from Naked Video, and back to Scotch and Wry through the 80's.

Glad to see you reviewing this series. It really does get better as it carries on. You probably have been told but the main characters are played by actors that are very much younger than they portray. The series was a spin off from a sketch show called ‘Chewin the Fat’ you probably have guessed but there are a lot of estates in the uk like the one in the series. They were built between the fifties and the seventies to replace the Victorian slums. They offered a nice new alternative to that. However the experiment largely failed and most of those estates became pretty grim places to live and best avoided. Some were really rough places to be. Vic jack and winston are all pensioners. People like them would be on a state pension, which is really low and very difficult to live on. Often choosing between heating and eating. So anything that they can get cheaply would be considered.

In Scotland, Still Game and the sketch show it came from, Chewin’ The Fat, we’re must watch shows. Talked about by pretty much everyone, they reflected what was happening in Scotland. If Scotland can be known for anything other than the touristy stuff, the ability to laugh at itself has to be up there! If you are the subject of the jokes, you can be sure of two things that you’ve succeeded in, either complete disaster or blinding success! Depending on how the jokes are worded will define your popularity! As for Still Game getting better, it got taken to the stage, same cast. It never toured. It played the biggest single indoor venue, The Hydro in Glasgow, and sold it out completely, for a month! A few years later, they done it again but limited for two weeks! Series 1 they are finding their feet, developing the characters. They really are warming up!

I'm in my 50s and me and my pals are from exactly the same council house schemes and pubs as these characters, we're just slightly younger. This series is one of Scotland's best exports.

I think you cope with Scottish accents and humour really well. We alter so many English words that's quite a feat, well done. You'll gradually pick any words still throwing you up as you go on. Enjoy.

This series has been very enjoyable to watch and you've got my sub! I see you have reacted to some Mitchell and Webb in the past and another British sit-com I highly recommend you watch is Peep Show if you haven't done so already. Take care.

Your question at the end of the video there Eclectic, Still Game is top of most Scot's favourite comedy programmes aside from maybe 3 or 4 others tops. For me, it's number one, and yes, people are right - it gets better, so if you're enjoying it the now, start wearing adult diapers for the inevitable "pissing yourself laughing" 😅

I don’t know if you’d be able to do this on KZbin, but Netflix carries the show and it has subtitles. But the best part is that they write the accent into the subtitles. So down is written as “doon”, more is “mair” and dead is “deid”. For some reason, that made it even funnier to me.

Ya see, here in scotland we slang everyday words. Mix that with accents and thats why it sounds like we're talkin a different language. My work collegue is polish.. he came here speaking almost perfect english. When he got here he thought hed landed elsewhere as he couldnt understand a word. Now he speaks fluent scottish slang. Its all about the slang bud
