The Queen was reportedly impressed and amused by this sketch at the time.

Reminded me of how all outdoor manual workers in the UK used to wear "Donkey Jackets" when I was growing up. A loose woollen jacket with PVC on the shoulders. Seems to have become a fashion item now, like the US peacoat.

A traffic warden, policeman, postman and lollipop lady as backing singers, I think it’s late 70s as the uniform for postmen was different in the 80s.

The song mentions that the Queen is 'acting like Anna Neagle'. Dame Anna Neagle was a popular British actress who often appeared in upper crust roles, including playing Queen Victoria in two feature films.

There is a short film (about 27 minutes long) of the 2 Ronnies. Made in the style of the old silent films but with sound and not voices (more like a mumbling sound). It's called 'The Picnic'.

Hi Squirrel, I thought I had seen every 2 Rons’ sketches but definitely haven’t seen this one. Love their usual fast wordplay and especially love their little dancing bit towards the end…. Reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy’s Blue ridge mountains of Virginia. 👍🐿🏴

Someone said the dancing was meant to be similar
@davidtilstone48142 жыл бұрын
The dancing was similar in parts to the dance to the Avalon boys (at the ball) in way out West. It's got to have been a small tribute to them.

Hey Squirrel, i remember seeing other comedians doing that shuffle dance prior to when they did this. In fact, I believe I may have seen the Marx Brothers do it in one of their films. I think, Laurel & Hardy & The Crazy Gang also did the same. Holding each other`s hand & moving in & out while lifting up the edge of the jackets, was taking off one of the dances you would see in ballrooms. The idea being, the edge of the jacket imitated a lady holding the edge of her ballgown.

The ''musical instruments'' were a nod to a very popular Lonnie Donegan who had a skiffle group in the 50s. He had a few big hits like the silly ''My old man's a dustman'' and the better ''Battle of New Orleans'' or ''Rock Island Line''.

did you ever have anything like 'Lollipop Ladies' in US ? over here they were stationed outside schools usually for younger children and they 'patrolled' the pedestrian crossing outside to keep kids safe, of course that's from days with Schools not on main roads, way way less traffic and then most children were walked to school no big yellow buses in UK
@TheRealSquirrel2 жыл бұрын
No never have heard of that

Still operating to this day. There's a lollipop person on patrol at the crossings of the two primary schools near my house. The term comes, as you may have gathered from the one in this sketch, from the circular reflective sign attached to a long pole, that they hold out to stop the oncoming traffic.
