In France, even more in Paris, you can see large Scooters up to 400, or even 500cc. It’s very practical to drive in dense traffic. Also, in France, all cops on bike have a very rigorous training, I would even say crazy training and do all kind of simulation like traffic, small path, different roads type, riding with just one hand to shoot with the other, etc… so you can assume that any cop you will see on a bike in France are not just a rider, but a freaking good rider and you must be really bold to think you can outrun them.

Scooters in the 250 to 600 cc range are quite capable, and have some handling pluses in dense traffic/urban areas. Especially in France those beasts are not uncommon.

They are mostly used by drug traffickers. In fact, that's an easy way to spot them : a guy with a powerful scooter, doing nothing but keeping his motor running and looking at his phone for the next "delivery". They need to be able to escape fast. And in some cities like Marseille, they deliver lead as well as shit, and also need to be able to escape fast enough from their target's friends.

@kelsea-2002 this kind of chase is absolutely rare in France too, especially in town. Most of the time, police take the number, then simply come to the guy at 4:00 am, it's easier. Here it would be definitely a special situation, not a simple road contravention. Murder, robbery or something like that, so the police know scooter is robbed and they won't find the driver by any other way than arresting him right now. I'm pretty sure in Germany are the same.

when you hear of a scooter your mind automatically thinks of a 50cc "moped" but there are actually scooters up to 850cc and some scooters like mine (yamaha tmax 530) can be really crazy tuned, now its becoming more common to put a turbo on these scooters and they could easily push +100hp (on a scooter that is 218kg/470lbs)

As a dispatch/courier rider in the 80s, we did some proper mental stuff on motorbikes, but that was next-level bostin. Paris always was a bit interesting to drive round though. A great city. I lived near East Midlands Airport which is the busiest freight airport in the UK. It's used by UPS and FedEx, but has a massive DHL hub. DHL is odd because it started as American but is now German. I think they have a big hub in Cincinnati.

That was nuts.I was a motorcyclist for many years and even have a stint as a courier on them and have done a bit of crazy stuff myself in the long distant past, but that was insane. How no one crashed in that is a miracle. There are several brands of large wheel scooters now and they range from 250cc up to 400cc as of last I was aware, and as you can see, they can really go well. Some even have 3 wheels and can still lean like a proper bike.

Personnaly, if I have to go in Paris area, I avoid to drive in the city or even drive on the "boulevard périphérique" around. It is very stressfull and as you don't know the place, it is hard to be focused both on the traffic and chose the right lane or direction. In that movie, steets are empty but during business hours, the traffic is worst.

I used to do motorcycle testdriving for a big manufacturer (german...😉) who also builds some large high performance scooters. On a handling course, as long as there are no long stretches of straight in the track where top speed plays a role, a tricked out scooter with the right person on it will outrun even a professional race rider on a superbike. We put that to the test...😆

A bit off topic, but relatable. About forty years ago. I was living in a newly opened suburb on the gold coast, Queensland, Australia.. It was about eleven pm, a quiet night outside. In the far distance, I hear a big twin cylinder motorbike engine, coming closer and, at some speed, by the sound of it. As I listened to that big twin wind out to top rev's, in top gear. I begin to hear a police siren coming as well, some distance behind. The sound of the big twin could be heard for about four minutes as it worked it's way up into the hinterland hill's several kilometers away from my house. I will never forget the sound of that motor going full noise along brand new road's.

these policemen get sooo many hours practicing "extreme conditions" driving on special safe driving ranges (actually small racing tracks with all kinds of obstacles, sometimes they do it for like 4 days every week, and it's part of their training). that's the whole point of police bikes in Europe, they train a lot to be able to (hopefully) perform urban chases because it's so easy to get away if you're a criminal (especially on scooters like that one)

Piaggio is a type of scooter. The Piaggio company is was based & founded in Sestri Ponente, Genova, 1884. SpA (Piaggio) is an Italian motor vehicle manufacturer, which produces a range of two-wheeled motor vehicles and compact commercial vehicles under four brands: Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi. I own a Piaggio 50cc scooter & I've topped it out at 76kph. So you can think what a 125cc or even a 250cc scooter can top out at. Usually scooter are quite light & having either step-through or full auto gearboxes, there is no need to change gears.

French police isn't supposed (nor allowed) to take such risks, but they do it anyway. They also should only use sirens when absolutely necessary and during proper emergencies. But I've lived on a major avenue of Paris in the vicinity of a precinct and I could hear sirens all day and night long. Most types of vehicles usually being considerate enough to turn off their siren and only use small / short bursts at intersections when really needed, especially at night. Everyone : firesquad, civil rescue, ambulance... Everyone except the police, which always used it continuously., even at 3 or 4 AM. Often at shift change, to return to the precinct faster (NOT an emergency), etc. They also extensively used their car's megaphone, in the middle of the night, sometimes to comment on a woman's outfit (I've seen it multiple times near my former home). Or to say something to someone on the sidewalk, only a few meters away, close enough for a conversation if they'd simply opened their car window. The whole avenue was fed-up (still probably is) and every time complaints were made, every time the same answer : "the police only uses the siren when necessary" yada yada... nothing to see here... "how dare you doubting the professionalism..." etc. Exhausting! The thing is, there's no civil oversight or control over the police in France. There's only an internal affairs department, which is like having the loonies run the mental health evaluations in the asylum. Several "interior" ministers (homeland sec) repeatedly asked police officers / agents to clearly wear their RIO numbers (matricule equivalent), but many find ways to not comply. Same for the personal cameras, they "never work ", "battery is dead", "card's full", you name it. It's a bit as if the ministry feared their own troops and didn't dare really enforcing the rules for the police. There's not much real corruption per se, at least not that I know of, but there have been numerous cases where CCTV (often private), phone video recordings, etc. completely contradicted the police' version of events, and proved that they lied and covered each other. Exactly like the shooting of a teenager that triggered the major riots in France last June. Worse, the police on site tried to seize phones and delete footage, and one of the two officers continued to lie even though the video was available and quite damming. So, I'm certain that driving at such speeds, centimeters away from building entries is not allowed, and the very existence of this footage online should raise eyebrows at the police prefecture. But will it lead to any action? Pretty sure it won't, as always. Another example: when a decent police officer assigned to the "tombs" of the Paris courthouse witnessed systematic abuse, racism and insults by many his colleagues on detainees, he informed his hierarchy which didn't lift a finger, so he alerted the media. The results? The decent police officer was sanctioned! So, the French police isn't exactly examplary, that's an understatement, and many, myself included, have very little trust in them. Not even mentioning the repeated profiling, ID check abuse, verbal abuse, illegal searches, etc. That I experienced in the past 30 years. My last pretty bad experience happened when I was stopped and frisked. I asked the officer for him to change gloves or to put them off (the leather ones he wears everyday to frisk everyone, a real Petri dish) as I had chemo less than a week before and my immune system was severely compromised. Guess what he did? He refused and took offense, of course, then voluntarily patted me "firmly" on my neck and cheeks, then conscientiously rubbed his gloves all over my clothes, like he was wiping them. Just for the fun of it. While the other one giggled. That, is the French police. I'm sure there are decent, respectful and professional ones, but I rarely met them. My experience was mostly with a bunch of disrespectful, humiliating, aggressive, unprofessional and abusive ones indulging in their double standards. And as long as there won't be a powerful civil oversight and a real change of behavior in the ranks of the majority of those that are in contact with the public, they'll be hated and not trusted one bit by a growing portion of the public. One last "nugget" about the French police : Paris city hall has been asking, or should I say begging, the police prefecture for years if not decades (in France the "real" police is national, not municipal) for officers that speak at least a minimum of English and preferably also other languages to work in and patrol the main touristic areas of the capital. But most officers can't even babble more than a few words, if at all, which is absolutely shameful and ridiculous in world's tourism capital. And when you try to help by offering a translation, they take offense... Sorry for the long rant, but it had to come out, as I am deeply ashamed by the police of this country.

These scooters are no small or slow vehicles, they are almost light motorcycles and therefore very agile. In Longdon, the police would make smart use of cctv cameras (London has almost 100% cctv coverage). Here in The Netherlands this would not be possible, because these scooters are not allowed. If something like this happens, the helicopter would be used to follow it. When there is huge traffic on the Paris ring road (Peripherique), these scooters will drive 70 km/h in between the leftmost lanes... Crazy stuff, only found in Paris. The police's answer: training.

In the US, what you call "scooters" are sort of mopeds, small cylinders scooters, like 50 cc or 125 cc tops. In Europe, we have what is called "maxi scooters", more than 125 cc, from 250 to sometimes 800 cc. The most sold scooter in France is the Yamaha T-Max, with 500 to 540 cc, very powerful, much torque, very maneuverable... It's the most stolen scooter too and has been much used by criminals for drive-by shootings and robberies. The police motorcycles here are Yamaha TDM 900, a somewhat old and heavy bike, not very maneuverable. Thats' why there bike cops struggled to catch the culprit...

"That thing looks kinda souped up" Honestly, i wouldn't be surprised if that was true. Scooters are smaller, lighter, less powerful and less equipped for high speeds than a motorbike, and they're also more easily accessible to younger teenagers. Here in Denmark they're only allowed to have a 30 mph top speed, but i'm sure you've already guessed that most young guys with an interest in engines and mechanical things are gonna modify the snot out of these things so they run highway speeds. My dad once said to me "Son. I don't think i've ever ridden a legal scooter. All we did when i was learning to weld through a welding course as a teenager was make illegal exhausts for these things."😂

I think most of European countries don’t like car chases in general, it’s much safer for everyone to note down the plates to pay them a visit later and such a chase in a city as crowded as Paris seems very irresponsible. I know it’s not supposed to be standard procedure, so maybe for some reason it’s extremely important to catch this specific guy

The bigger the bike the more it takes to slow down the scooter being lighter is more nimble in the corners and slows down quicker so it can outdo the bigger in city traffic but on a straight line the scooter would lose real quickly.

In Europe, scooters are very common ( of course nothing to compair with Asia). Even a little PCX or Nmax 125cc can go pretty fast ( 65 m/h) and they are way lighter than motobikes, wich makes them very handy and powerfull on accelerations. The most common scooters are 125cc or 350/400cc but some can have 800cc. No big differences with motobikes in fact except the position ( legs ahead for scooters), and the fact that scooters are always automatic. Modern technolgy made them very different than mopeds those days ( ABS, assisted braking distribution, 4 stroke engine, etc).

By the way... The video doesn't show, but, probably the criminal running in the scooter did a lot more dangerous maneuvers to run away too... Edit 01: This video can be used in court against him, due to the fact he endangered lives of the civilians and the police officers

In Europa we have also motorscooters. Scooter is around 50cc. And motor scooters is 100cc and more. This one has 350cc. Is a fast one

The scooter is a piaggio beverly 350cc, police in france are usually on yamaha tracer 900cc, yamaha fjr 1200cc or bmw gs 1200cc, from what I've seen in paris . Also, I did ride scooters in paris for years, it's very possible to lose bike that chase you if you know what you're doing

Also, you can legally interlane in paris, so it's not crazy to go fast in that narrow spaces, it's what everybody does

Paris was completely redesigned in the 1850s and 1860s. Previously it had narrow, medieval streets and was very crowded. Napoleon III want Ed to beautify the city and also make it easier to quell the frequent riots and barricades which France was/is famous for.

Paris is a charming place for a bike pursuit, but if you want to get thrilled for real you should look up for Brazilian police bike pursuits. That’s the real deal!

Pursuits are unjustifiable, it only adds danger to the situation. Instead of one idiot diving relatively fast now you have a bunch of idiots driving extremely fast wit almost no regard to others safety because they don't get punished accordingly if they hurt an innocent. And you also have a criminal driving even faster and under a lot more stress taking way more risks to escape increasing the chances of hurting or killing innocent people

Even for French from the country side, major cities like Paris, Lyon, Marseille are hell to drive by. too complex.

Sccoter vs motorbike? On the highway the bike will win for sure, but in a crowded european city with all the traffic, pedestrians, narrow streets? I would opt for a little Vespa every time as you don´t need speed as much as maneuverability. Especially e.g. in Germany where the police bikes are often heavy duty BMWs. 😉😉

The 'scooter' might has been a Yamaha Tmax (500cc), as powerful as a motorcycle. In Paris' districts, Tmax is very useful to piltot because you don't have to manually shift (it's automatic, acceleration from zero is ragefull) and easily do dangerous zigzags between street crosses, pedestrian, car traffic, side walks, etc. That machine is the most preferred one of 'bad boys'

Tmax has the weight and size of a motorcycle not the power. Better to have 125/180cc 2t on small frame scooter

I hope they threw the book at that guy, because there's reckless driving, and there's driving on the freaking sidewalk. Dude definitely lost any kind of licence to drive he had, because that was super dangerous.

Quite some dangerous manuevres from the police over there... but yeah those big scooters are quite capable of even highway speeds. Regarding UPS, it's kind of the DHL for you: I sometimes see a van from them but almost never received anything from them, but DHL is quite common :)

Watching this video a bit late... but they did. 12/12/2023 a pedestrian died after being hit by one of those jackasses of the brigade called BRAV-M, which has been controversial very soon after its creation. If you have police chassing someone in France you can be sure it's for something prety heavy...they won't take the risk to chasse for a mundane or small crime.
