The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was originally started as an exhibition for British military pipe bands but has evolved into an event that includes bands from all over the world. For example, my uncle's alma mater, The Citadel in Charleston, SC, has had their pipe band invited to the tattoo multiple times. That's why they are all wearing different uniforms. This is the massed performance where all the bands perform together. Throughout the rest of the night each band gets to perform individually or in smaller groups. And they are performing at Edinburgh Castle. I haven't been yet, but it is definitely on my bucket list.

Most of these guys are real soldiers in Highland Dress uniform - there is no costume involved here! Different regiments will have different tartans, headdress, etc. The 'arena' is constructed every summer on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, and dismantled again each autumn. I think bagpipes have to be filled with air, which is then squeezed out between elbows and bodies through the long pipes or drome, while the notes are played on a woodwind-like instrument known as a chanter, which is also affixed to them.

There is oh so much more music out there than 'today's' music you hear on the local radio or on your main stream music from whatever country you are from. I love this video! Now let me see if I can answer all of your questions. I’ve been playing bagpipes for approximately 35 years. I was a pipe major for approximately nine years. Yes, I’ve played at many of the Edinburgh tattoos, plus others all of the world. As others of commented it’s a celebration of military music from all round the world. Because Edinburgh hosts the Edinburgh military tattoo, clearly going to be represented by the pipes and drums. Not every Piper and drummer is necessarily in the military, some are actually civilian bands who are invited. Some of them are also not from the British military, again some are invited from civilian and military Commonwealth countries. Uniforms will differ from regiment to regiment and from band to band. Practice normally starts in the early June. All practices are conducted in Edinburgh. The various bands from all over the world who are invited normally start practising at their home country. They’re normally provided with the sheet music months in advance. Where they practice to reach an acceptable standard. This is quite lengthy and intense. All musicians are brought together to practice the sheet music they have been given under the watchful eye of the director of music for the Edinburgh Tattoo. Once they are happy with the music being played is at a very good standard then they practice marching and formation. This normally takes 2 to 3 weeks as for the uniforms yes they are very heavy. They are very warm and sometimes very uncomfortable. Bagpipes are difficult to the novice piper. The lungs and diaphragm gets used to it, same as training any other parts of your body. I look back at my time at the Edinburgh tattoos and of course other military music festivals all over the world with fondness. Sitting and listing to the pipes and drums on a TV or monitor doesn’t really do it justice. If you’re there, you can actually feel the music passing through your body. There is nothing else like in the world.

The bagpipes have long had an association with the military, used in battle as a means to motivate the troops and intimidate the enemy. During battle, they could also be used as a means of sending strategic messages to the troops. Imagine being an enemy troop in a trench and from miles away all you hear is the sound of bagpipes in the distance getting steadily closer, especially if you are unfamiliar with the sound of bagpipes. Also the way bagpipes work they sound like they are a lot closer than they actually are which can disorientate an already nervous awaiting enemy. Also if you combine the sound with drums it can make a much smaller group of people sound more numerous adding to the intimidation.

When I watch American parades (i.e. Macy's Thanksgiving) I'm always surprised at how few pipe & drum bands there are. I'm Canadian & bagpipes are a staple at virtually all parades (I LOVE bagpipes). When you watch a massed pipe band in person the skirl of the pipes goes right through you. If you ever have a chance to go - do it! BTW, it's the custom if someone is 'piped in" (i.e. a retirement) that the piper is given a shot of whiskey. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

I love your enthusiasm for this! I hope I can answer a few of your questions. I am in a band from Canada that has participated in the tattoo several times, although I have not personally performed there. First, each row in the formation is a different pipe band, each with different uniforms, which is why there is so much variety. Some bands are from the British army and perform every year. Others are invited from all over the world to perform, including Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Jordan, India, etc. Many of the invited bands are also military, some are police bands, and some are civilian. As for the weight of the uniform. Yup ... its heavy!! The kilt alone is a heavy wool and weighs 2.5 to 3 pounds. The tunics are often wool as well. The plaid that some bands wear ... the long piece of tartan hanging over the left shoulder, is also wool. In total it can be up to 10 pounds or so, depending on the band and the details of the uniform. In warm weather it is HOT!! These uniforms are meant for the cold, damp highlands of Scotland. Not so comfortable on a hot summer day here in Canada when the temperature reaches 80 to 90 degrees - but yet bloody cold if you have to play in the winter! As for practice ... all performers in the massed pipes and drums arrive in Edinburgh about a week before the shows start, and the musicians are expected to have all of the music memorized before they arrive. Being able to play at the level expected takes several years (at least!!) of lessons, practice, and performing, but some performers have been playing for decades. Note that, unlike other types of marching bands, none of the players have music with them when performing - it is all memorized. Once they arrive in Edinburgh, they have one week of rehearsals - 10 to 12-hour days - to memorize all of the choreography (which is even more complicated some years than in this video). It is a lot of work, and for some of the visiting bands the performers are all volunteers doing this on their own time! Rehearsals culminate with a full dress rehearsal of the entire show (about 90 minutes in total with many other performers) on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle where the tattoo is held. Then, the tattoo runs for four weeks in August, 25 performances in total, every day except Sunday (but two shows on Saturday!) I am a drummer not a piper, but yes, it takes a lot of air and breath control to play the pipes. The pipers keep the bag under their arm inflated by blowing air in through the blowpipe. They then use their arm to squeeze the air out at a steady rate. The air passes through reeds in the three drones over the pipers' shoulders and through the chanter in their hands. The chanter is used to actually play the notes. It works like a recorder that many kids have played in school, except that it also has a reed and takes a lot more air to play than a recorder.

Every year the Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle (which is still a military base despite all the tourists) during the Edinburgh International Festival. The pipe bands are both military and civilian from around the world. You can often tell the difference; individuals who are older, less fit than military standards, have a metal frame to hold the drum or female will belong to civilian bands. Scottish regimental drums will also have the battle honours of the regiment on them. They have had fantastic military bands over the years; a standout for me was the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Forces band which played marches on steel drums. They were 'borrowed' from the festival to play at a passing out parade at the Scottish Police College one day. All the military bands consist of serving soldiers. The pipes have a long history of being played in battle but were eventually forbidden in the 20th century as so many unarmed pipers were being killed leading troops into battle. When pipers were deployed as soldiers, eg to Iraq and Afghanistan, rhey often took their pipes with them so they would play them there too. Considering the 80th anniversary of D-Day this year, have a look at the story of Bill Millin, the commando who played his pipes on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings and later led rhe reinforcements to relieve Pegasus Bridge. German snipers later told him that they considered him mad so they didn't fire at him!

The precise history of Bagpipes is unclear and there are various claims as to their origin. It has been suggested that they originated in the Middle East and were brought to Scotland by Celtic forefathers; whereas others claim that the instrument was introduced to the Scots by the Romans. But they were played in medieval folk bands.i'm English and love the pipes and i like the Northumbrian smallpipes played by someone like Kathryn Tickell.Kathryn Tickell, OBE, DL is an English musician, noted for playing the Northumbrian smallpipes and fidler. If you have the time please check out the Royal Marines Corps of Drums and Top Secret Drum Corps .The Top Secret drum corps ar from Switzerland. The pipers blow into the bag.The bag supplies a steady stream of air to another pipe called a chanter. The chanter contains reeds that make noise when vibrated. Bagpipers use two hands to play the chanter. This produces the melody of the song.cheers and stay safe young lady.

The Military Tattoo is a much larger event that invites bands from all over the world and all continents and from all backgrounds of military. The national dress of Scotland is the kilt, usually wool socks and brogues, the furry purse on the front of the kilt is called a Sporran, you can keep things in it. Drummers will turn their sporran to the back so it doesn't interfere with the drum, bass drummers will often wear a leopard skin or bear skin (usually fake now) The rest of the outfit is Scottish military band dress. The drum section are not that much different in USA High School or College drum lines, and I think this is where the influence for those came from, military bands. Most towns in Scotland have their own band and will march the main street for tourists in summer and at either end of a march will form into a circle around the band leader, the guy with the big stick or scepter. The bagpipes are very hard to blow on, you need to have the lungs of Dizzy Gillespie. It's all bagpipes, you start learning on the chanter, which is a pipe similar to snake charmers in India would use. Scotland has thousands and thousands of tartans, which is used in making the kilt, originally went by clan or family, the upper garments differ between regions or regiment, this explains the different colors. There is the union jack, also the Scotland flag is a white st andrews cross on blue background, its a saltire, the same as Jamaica, it represents St Andrew who was crucified on a diagonal cross or "saltire". The Scottish royal flag is a red lion on and yellow flag.
